  1. I agree, Robert - both 'Item' and Tips' are misleading - and it has always been a source of confusion.

What would you have looked for in Help? 'Expand memo' - 'Show memo' - Show more' ??

Note also that the title of this thread 'Show more than one line of a tag' could be confusing. On the rightclick menu in the Details view are options to 'Display more rows per tag' and 'Display fewer rows per tag' - and, if you check that out, it is quite different from the 'Item tips' option.

  2. Hello -

I moved your message to the TMG v8 section where you will receive more replies. Re locked datasets, from Help:

"Locked data sets can be viewed, but not changed. This allows you to view data you have received from other researchers without changing the data. To make any changes in a data set, you must first unlock it. Once a data set has been unlocked, it cannot be locked again. Therefore, it cannot be refreshed from the original data set (applies to imported data sets)."
Assuming this is your own project which you will be editing, you will want to Unlock it.
As you start working in TMG, you may also want to customize your workspace. There are guidelines here for customizing your layout (workspace) - and many user examples here.
Let us know if you have any more questions - and welcome to TMG.

I tried the focus group, but it only picked out 32 entries, and there are about/ around 100 in that branch.

    Bruce -

A common problem when selecting people in the Focus Group is not first highlighting the people for whom you wish to add ancestors, descendents, spouses. See the forum message here for an example.

Whether you split your large file is a personal decision - and may be influenced by how much intermarrying there has been within your family lines. I am more comfortable working with 4 separate projects (my husband's parents and mine). You can try the split on a copy of your project and see if you prefer it.

  4. Diane -

You may have run into a common error when setting up a Focus Group. Note that any selection you make in the Focus Group - like Add Spouses - will only affect people in the focus group who are selected/highlighted at the time.

So, before clicking on Add Spouses, use 'Select All' to highlight everyone - if it is your wish to add spouses to everyone.

There is a video here that shows the sequence.

1 - I added Frank Alexander. He is highlighted( yellow).

2 - He is still highlighted. I added his descendents.

3 - I wanted all the spouses. I highlighted the entire group and added the spouses.

If that is not the problem, let us know.

  5. Have you tried adjusting the text size globally using the Windows Screen Resolution?

Rightclick on the Windows screen and select Screen Resolution. There is an option on that screen to 'Make text and other items larger or smaller. The choices are smaller, medium, and larger. There is also an option on the left side to 'Set custom text size (DPI)'. That gives you a sliding scale, so you can try something like 115%, for example.

  6. Kay -

You can see it more clearly in the video here.

In the upper left of the Details view is the word Filtered. I right-clicked on the first name - Delilah Woods - in the Details view (you can rightclick anywhere in the Details view). This opened up the right-click menu where the Filter options are listed. I un-checked the filter that was selected. That got rid of the Filtered.

If you aren't familiar with that rightclick menu, you may want to explore some of the options - like adding different columns to the Details view. Many screens in TMG have rightclick menus, so it is something to look for.

Were you able to restore your toolbars and icons?

  7. Kay -

For the red filter - rightclick in the Details view and on that rightclick menu, go to 'Filter for' and deselect any filters that are ticked.

To restore your toolbars and icons, click on View / Toolbars on the top menu and select the toolbars (which include the icons) that you wish to include in your layout.

Once you have restored the toolbars that you like, go to the top menu View / Layouts and save your layout with a new name, so you can always go back to that layout.

An alternative to the Backup on Exit is a Backup button on your Custom Toolbar. It runs much faster than the Backup on Exit - and is handy to backup during a work session if you have entered a lot of data - instead of waiting to backup until you shut down. I have that button at the beginning of the toolbar - but it would be even more practical perhaps to put it at the right end, near the X Close button so you don't forget it. There is a video here showing how fast it runs with all the options selected.

There is more information on customizing TMG layouts and toolbars here.

There is an option to attach an image to a reply. I do not know if that option is restricted. If so, let me know and you can send me the image and I will post it.

Here is how to do it:

On the Reply screen, click the More Reply Options at the bottom right.

Use the Browse button to select the file on your computer.

    Click Attach this File.

Click Add to Post (at right end of bar below the message field.

The image will be placed wherever your cursor is when you Add to Post.

If it is a large chart with many images, any chance it is a memory problem with the chart? Are these images in the same generation? If so, you might try a small chart which includes those people and their images. You could also try inserting the images in the chart and see if that works. The Insert Image icon in VCF is the square yellow box with a mountain view.

  11. Hello -

Do not first make an empty project. The opening screen in TMG has an option for Import (scroll down the list to see GEDCOM and Legacy). I believe Legacy v8 may have a different file extension, so you may want to start with a GEDCOM. Once you have the import, use the Help file for assistance with sorting out the details - or ask your questions here.
