  1. Hi Again,

I seem to be again having problems with TMG reducing drastically in size doing backups. I have moved TMG to a new computer, Windows 8, not tied to the internet, has no virus protection and very few other programs. I start out with a back up size of 36,129 KB. When, after making sure ALL my strings refer to the specific computer and location I start the backup, the file size ends up as 3,839 KB!

    Anyone have any suggestions?

    TIA,

  2. OK, I've started all over again! So far I have reformatted my hard drive, installed Windows 7 from the original supplied program from computer manufacture. I have installed TMG version 8, then 8.08. I have loaded a backup file from that era. I have performed deletions, changes and adds and run Reindex, Optimize several times plus did a backup with NO ERRORS! In addition, I have created a GEDCOM file, which, appears to be complete at 5563 KB. I have since connected with the internet and did some further work... In Progress. I have yet to install my virus protection... That's next...

I have now installed McAfee virus protection and "Turned Off real time scanning ...." Also, I have not accomplished any Windows Updates.

  3. Still not working. I shutdown many items, bottom Task Manager reads, "Processes 70, CPU 3-4%, Physical Memory 49%". I reinstalled TMG 9.03 and restored a, what I believe is a good backup. I added about five items, run Optimize and everything OK. I perform a new back up, it was OK. Closed the program. Tried to reopen the program and up pops "File Access Is Denied" ...\appdata\local\temp\tmg67284951\_rpts.dbf.GETREPORTS2.

    It just doesn't stop!

  4. Hi Virginia,

I first delete the tags for the person. Then I go to the Edit, ensure the ID number is in the box and Delete one person. Now, when I try to Restore ANY of my recent last 15 backups (within the last three days), I get, "Someone else is using the selected project and it is not possible to restore it." Genealogy recording has lost its fun as I try to struggle through what appears to be failures in the TMG software!

Being retired since 2005 and working genealogy with TMG at least 8 hours a day, in the past few months, it seems any entries made are either lost or have to be re-entered over and over again.

  5. Well, I have just about given up on TMG! I thought the issues would be taken care of after reformatting my hard drive, installing version 9.3 through Administrator, normal install, limiting programs etc. When I delete a person and do an Optimize, I get a .dbf lost, or a system being used by someone else, etc. I then have to reload a backup. I have dropped all external attachments and still problems.

With all these problems using TMG I will have to go, SADLY FOR SURE, to a genealogy with so many less abilities!

  6. Hello Everyone,

I just want to say, after a complete hard drive format, re-install basic OS Windows 7, TMG (so far version 8) I have had NO PROBLEMS. HORAY!!!! iI AM SLOWLEY RE-INSTALLING programs and checking TMG to see where or what might be the cause. So far, I have not updated any Windows stuff and without any virus protection.

    All for now,

    John

  7. Hi Michael,

I have even tried the reformat my hard drive and install TMG. My additional issue is, it seems if I get the system working at all, and delete a person, and try an "Optimize" I get a ".dbf" can't be found. Then, I have to "restore" again. I've tried other avenues, I get a "npv.dbf" doesn't exist. 476 REINDEX DATASETS. I'm going to try to REFORMAT my hard drive "AGAIN" and just install TMG.

  8. Hi Everyone,

I'm just not sure what seems to be the problem with TMG Version 9. I wish there were a way to take a current project and return to, maybe version 7.0. I have deleted the Version 9.03 several times, rebooted my computer many times, downloaded the file from WG web site, tried to restore any of my backups and now I get, "Some one else is using the selected project and it is not possible to restore it"!

I start to get bad thoughts about TMG final version.

  9. Good Morning,

First of all, Virginia, to answer your questions, my back up path is the same as my "Default Project Path" with \Backups\. Your second question of what am I backing up; I have tried it many different ways. For most of my errors I "Back Up All", eliminate External Exhibits and DNA, and for Program Items all are checked. Normal Compression.

And, to comment on TPG, I have been with computers and software since 1992. And, yes, for the most part "Learning" the "ins and outs" of an "Operating System" is one thing. But, with program software, one "expects" it to run without too many problems ALL the time. Realizing this is a complex program, over the years, I have been with TMG using version 6.2. My problems started with about version 8+. Up to that point, I have promoted TMG and talked it up, provided training to many people and a discussion for a genealogy group.

At this point, whatever the problem is, I am NOT a happy TMG person.

  10. Hi Again,

Well, after completely removing and reinstalling version 9.03 and making ONE entry I did the shuffle again. This time the Reindex, Optimize and VFI went OK. However, selecting back up with Project items: Project data files and External exhibits checked I get OLE exception error: Exception code c 00000fd.OLE object may be corrupt.

    The frustration is getting worse..

  11. Hi Again,

Well, here I go again! Working just about 15 minutes doing some "Citation" work.

I tried to run a "Optimize" after doing a "Reindex". I get this: "This process requires exclusive access to the data files but the project is open elsewhere at this time. Please close any other copies of the application that are accessing this project and try again.

I tried to then run a backup and I got this: "Warning: The project is in use elsewhere. It cannot be backed up while in use. Program closes completey

I go to open the program and tag appears: "An error happened when opening the data tables... File c;\Users\John\Documents\The Master Genealogist v9\Projects\VANDYKESMITH_S.dbf not found."

I press "OK", then, "Repair mode has been activated. The application will now operate somewhat more slowly as it validates each file that it is opened. Repair Mode will be off again the next time that you run the application."

I now press OK. A new window opens and "Last" is greyed out!

I the try to Select and I get "An error happened when opening the data tables... File c:\...

So, the frustration just keeps building!

  12. Hi Everyone,

I'm not sure if it is just me and my TMG database. There was a time when genealogy (with the earlier versions of TMG) was fun! However, it seems of late, versions 8 and now 9 are with nothing but problems. I've had files lost on "Optimize", Backups not working properly, the program telling me it is in use "someplace else, etc.

I add and remove or modify citations, than try to backup and the program stops. I work with the program for about 15 minutes only to have the "Optimize" tell me of lost file.

I have recently reformatted my hard drive thinking, maybe, just maybe, there was something somewhere, giving bad information. I have tried to work the program with very little added programs to my hard drive with the same results. I have had help given through the forum and the TMG Digest, yet still the same results.

It is now to the point where "Genealogy and The Master Genealogist" is no longer fun!!!

I'd like to think those at Wholly Genes could produce a product without field experiencing major problems. When I worked genealogy with the earlier versions, I never had any issues.
