  1. Program Error message

Maybe the default action should be to log those files somewhere. I believe the simplest solution would be to link the help button on the error message to the correct section of the help file. Advanced users would find it helpful if the error message led to help. Maybe Data_paths.txt can be incorporated into the existing "Data Set Manager"

I appreciated the feedback. Thank you
  3. Setting up TMG on my new Notebook and came across the following minor issue. Starting TMG for the first time the "Select a Data Entry Mode" window comes up asking if you want to use Beginners or Advanced mode. I select Advanced mode and notice that on the "Details Window" the "Add/Edit/Delete/Primary" Buttons are shown? I would expect that these buttons would not be shown in Advanced mode, I checked the help file which states that in Beginners mode these buttons are on by default which seems to indicate they should not be on.

Created a dos batch file that does just this. See message here for file

In my test no error logs where found in any of the places mentioned. When you say you found the vfp9rerr.log do you mean you ran the same test I described, and a error file was created?
  7. For those of you who use some of TMG's advanced feature Data_paths.txt here is a (dos) bat file that I wrote for myself that I would like to share. The batch file allows you to manage separate tmg projects using Data_paths.txt. It does this by overwriting Data_paths.txt with previously set up Data_paths.txt files. See TMG7's help file for more information about Data_paths.txt You need to be familiar with DOS batch file and know how to move files around windows. Jim Would you like me to write the Bug Submission report?
  9. According to Whollygenes New Features in TMG v7 the answer appears to be no for running TMG7 under windows 98 eg: "TMG v7 is native to Windows Vista. It will also run on Windows XP and Windows 2000. (Windows 98 and NT are no longer supported)." I believe you cannot restore an older newer versions backup files on an older version eg: TMG7 on TMG6 and just because it seems to have worked. Be aware that it may just lead to a corrupted database as TMG7 had more information in the database that TMG6 does not know how to interpret or even how to store.
  10. Just some rambling regarding TMG7 (Please see this as ways to improve tmg) Issues: 1- No way to cancel autosearch on the "import Wizard" 2- Person tab - Details Section - the type/value (box) - would like to be able to expand the section so to be able to see all the tags in that box (so you don't have to scroll down) (or even to just convert this box to a single line under the type/name box eg: Reference/Children/Soundex/Tag Count/Age/Last Edit ) (or have these tag appear in the "type/date/name/place" section at the top to the list like the Relation tag) Terry: I was expecting with the new method of windows resizing, that when I increase the size of the window more information would display. (I currently use the rearrange items from the "Other Info" box eg: Right-click on it and choose "Customize...") 3-Family tab - Details section - used display (children in version 4?) less relevant today. 4-On the Detail screen (why are the 3 tabs(Person/Family/Tree) together) can they be seperated and 2 extra buttons added to the tool bar? 5-Please additional Keyboard Controls - Where tabs appear can we please have an option (in addition to the arrows) to use "CTRL+Page Up/Down) to cycle thru the tabs eg:on the Details section/ and the Options section in say charts (instead of using an arrow after tabing thru all the options) 6.previously submited with no response in 2006 ---- http://www.whollygenes.com/forums201/index...ic=5906&hl= 24 Jun 2006, 04:48 PM While using TMG, I have multiple(10-15) people opened, and each of the program title bars are identical for example "Main.PJC - The Master Genealogist". While this helps me choose the correct database, this makes it difficult to work out which instance I need to view with out selecting each individual and checking! I would like to know if I can make TMG Display the current person's details in Title Bar of Program for example "John Doe (1324) (1845 - 1890) : Main.PJC - The Master Genealogist" . This would improve TMG's already great useability. Any one? or should this be sent to support? -- Thank you
  11. Great discussions, interesting to see how other people use tmg. Here is my currently used layout. You can see three instances of tmg running, and notice that "Detail" tabs are turned off. As for how much demand, I do not know, that why it is a wish, I'd like to believe if it was available people would use. One advantage would be quick navigation. I would be happy with two views simultaneously, because ideally "Details - family" & "Details - Tree" could be combined into a single Details screen called say for example "Details - family tree" In "Details - family tree" the display would be a hybrid of the two with "Details - Tree" at the top and "Details - family" below. The duplicated individuals & BMD in "Details - family"(see my layout) for (Frank Alexander) and his mother & father can be shown on the top section. The spouses information (mary catherine) would have the BMD details as well as her parent BMD information. Bonus: with the space below the husband and wife: display their photo's (optionally of course) and for the "X Children" show photo's if possible, so it would be a whole family snap shot at a glance. Oh well, bringing head back down from clouds.

ggilbert1>I believe NN is running TMG in a virtual environment Linux - Wine Yes, I agreed with you. I searched the archive and saw that message and also saw that NN(Nathan) & Ian look after the Wine entry for TMG. My confirmation of the issue was done on a plain windows xp sp3 system (For the record, I have my main genealogy database for tmg in Vmware, I did not test Vmware for this issue.) Hi Jim, I believe I understand your message, a bit like the Matrix, there is no spoon I looked for the error.txt where you suggested and in the program files directory of tmg and the documents and settings but could not find one. I wonder where TMG saves a error.txt for a user data tree when you have this error, as it basically is for a non existant user data tree. I found no vfp9rerr.log in the system32 folder (WinXP) The contents of the Data_paths.txt I used to test this was as follows: [username] SharedProgramData=E:\tmg\sharedprogramdata UserProgramData=E:\tmg\userprogramdata UserData=E:\tmg\userdata Where [username] is your win xp account and "E:\" is a Drive/location that does not exist Do you have enough information from the previous messages to replicate the issue? If you need anything else, please ask.

  15. Program Error message

I agree with you about the virtual environment. I was only confirming the issue happens in a non virtual environment and more importantly pointing out nn's suggestions for the broken behavior of the error message and how it could be improved. NN's suggestions are as follows: 1.Have a better error message. 2.Link the help button to the relevant help file topic (nn suggest: "Data File Storage" or "Advanced data storage" or a new section on the error message. (see the email from the tmg list I copied into my message above) My suggestions are to go one step further: 3. Bring the functionality of the Data_paths.txt into tmg itself 4. When the error/message occurs be given a open project dialog box or be shown the welcome box (depending on your settings) This means that each time you start tmg, and Data_paths.txt is found in your tmg folder, tmg would first try the paths you have provided and if not then give you the option to continue. Instead of the current behaviors: * Pressing cancel > cancels and does not start tmg * Pressing ignore > (you can ignore 3 times) and the tmg main window comes up with a message about the app.ini not found (message only stays up for a few seconds) * Pressing help > no action (help does not appear)
  16. Unfortunately my edit of the above, did not take and the complete message redisplayed, apologies to all. I am interested in possible ways to improve tmg. And believe that the two wishes, I mention in this edited(2008/1/20) message may do that. For Wish 4 the "Detail screen" is currently made up of 3 tabs(Person/Family/Tree) - *What I am requesting is that the "Detail screen" be brought in to line with the rest of TMG's other screens that can be displayed independently of each other. This would mean that on screen you would be able to see (if you choose) the Person tab, next to the Family tab and Tree tab (except the tabs would be independent of each other. (I can create a image of what I mean if that helps) As a bonus wish it would be great to have the "Other Info" box from the Person tab separated out also or the information from this box optional shown inside the Person tabs tab display area. I previously researched and provided that information for the programmer to implement wish 5 Title Display of Databases Thank you for your answers.

  20. As a test, does it work if you turn off the images?
  21. Good idea. In the meantime have you tried fototagger ?
  22. Program Error message

On the TMG-L Archives I changed Data_paths.txt to point to d:\ (which does not exist) and when I started tmg I received the error indicated. The descriptive error message sound like a good idea.
