  1. For several reasons I have decided to convert from Windows XP to Linux (Ubuntu). Allthough I have not been doing genealogy for the last 5 or 6 years, I have at lot og valuable data entered in TMG. I have purchased TMG7, but never used it; all my data is in the v.6 format. If/whem I start my research again I will have to decide either converting/exporting mu data from TMG to Gramps or run TMG in a virtual machine on Linux (Ubuntu). Is TMG running smoothely like that? Unfortunately there is not many advanced genealogy programs for the Linux platform. The only one I know of is Gramps, and that is what I will have to deal with(?). I have been using many (but not all) advanced features in TMG and of course I want to get all possible data from TMG to Gramps, including witnesses etc. Is there another way than generating a GEDCOM file and which options must I use to get the most out of it? I am not experienced with Gramps yet and I don't know how good or bad Gramps' GEDCOM import works. Any surgestions on alternatives to the transfer of data between the two programs?
  2. Sorting the Project Explorer

Yes. First run: 20, second run: 0. Yep. Yes, in Danish. Okay: The problem is not solved. Thank you for your reply and for trying to help me :-) Kind regards Kurt
  3. I have a new dataset with only a few "people". There is some men and women, but also houses and farms and land register numbers. I have entered a farm with the geographical position as the first name and the land register number as the Surname. A few examples (G is the given name, S is the surname): 1. G:Havnevej 40, S:23f [farm] 2. G:Romerdammen 3, S:19e [farm] 3. G:Tage, S:Visby Madsen [person] 4. G:Marinus, S:Balle [person] When sorting the Project Explorer by Given Name, the list looks like this: Havnevej 40 23f Romerdammen 3 19e Tage Visby Madsen Marinus Balle When sorting the Project Explorer by Surname, the list looks like this: 23f, Havnevej 40 19e, Romerdammen 3 Visby Madsen, Tage Balle, Marinus As far as I can tell, none of the sortings is in any order at all. Normally I use the Danish language in TMG, but it's the same behavior when switching into English. In both cases I have re-indexed the dataset. Kind regards Kurt Hansen
  4. Switching between datasets?

Ahhh, never thougt of that. Good idea. Thank you :-) Kind regards Kurt
  5. Switching between datasets?

Simply because I have some 3-4000 persons in dataset 1 and it's much too confusing to see all these people, when working with the small dataset 2. In dataset 1 try to make a "model" of a village. I enter houses, farms and land register numbers as persons and I want to tie all these non-persons to people - some from my database and some are new, which does'nt realy fit in my database 1. Therefore I only use copies of my persons. It's a little difficult to my to explain in English ;-) Kind regards Kurt
  6. I have a project with two datasets: a copy of my personal set and a new, to which I need to copy one person at a time from the main set. I am working with the new dataset, adding several new information, and therefore I de-activate the main set and only activate it, when copying people. Activating and de-activating takes (too) many clicks with the mouse. Is there an easy way - a macro, a hotkey or....? Kind regards Kurt Hansen
  7. Nice report, but as far as I can see, there is no option for "Secondary output" i.e. settings a flag or exporting to a new dataset? On the "General" tab in "Report Options" I can only select Ancestors, #of generations, Cousins, Decendants and Spouses. It provides no further filtering. Better than nothing, allright ;-) / Kurt
  8. In my research I often look arround a person and focus on the nearest family. Witnesses are often some of the family. I find it very time consuming and complicated to define a search for uncles, aunts, cousins etc. for a particular person (how to?). Is the an easy method which will work on any person (enter ID number and push the button)? May I surgest that Wholly Genes will concider to implement such a feature in the program, maybe based on the so called "Knot System"? For a closer look on this, see The Knot System. / Kurt
  9. I want to split my database into four blood lines. Not actually split in four physical projects (maybe one day - I hav'nt decided yet), but mark each person with a flag to determine which line he/she belongs to. I find it very difficult to filter for that purpose in general (how to?) and the best result I can think of is to collect the family members. But how about all those persons in the database who are not in the blood line but "only" witnesses to any event to one of the family members? I want to set a flag to those persons who were witnesses to my great-grand parents wedding. / Kurt
  10. Looking on the date and time stamp of the files in the TMG program directory, I recognize that the REPEAT.CDX/DBF/FPT files has changed without using the repeat-feature in the program. Why and which changes are registered? I also see that the STRINGS.CDX/DBF are changed. The only thing I have done today is changing from Danish to English and visa versa. I am asking to know the importance of backup and to know if it's safe to copy and overwrite. / Kurt
  11. Thanks to all - very informative. I have had some troubles with my LAN and conflicts with my firewall. The best solution for me is to use the backup feature and a USB Data Link cable. It works and it's easy and handy to use. / Kurt
  12. I have 7-8 projects. I know that I can reset the preferences (File > Preferences) to the default values, but I would prefer to save the one which suits me best and copy all the settings to the other projects. Is that possible? From the Date and Time stamp of the files I can see(?) that the preferences are saved in the *.PJC file. / Kurt
  13. For many years I have been using TMG on a desktop computer. Now I have got a laptop, which I intend to use when travelling and visiting the archives. Which method is the easiest/best to keep the data synchronized? My OS is Windowx XP Home Edition and I do not use the two computers at the same time. /Kurt
  14. I want to generate a report showing the cousins to a person. I have read the Help-file and tried many filter combinations, but I can't make such a list. How do I do that? Kind regards Kurt
