  1. Cardinal's Utility and changing citation entry

In this case, you can probably use Find and Replace to make the change. Specify enough of the CD text to make sure that you will only change citations that you entered today. So: Field: Citation DetailFind what: FHL||no. 1201655||v. 5, TaufenReplace with: FHL||no. 1201655, item 5||v. 2, TaufenUse Pattern Matching: FalseMatch Case: FalseFind Whole Word Only: False "False" means unchecked. As specified above, Find and Replace will leave anything that follows "Taufen" untouched. Make sure you test with Log Only turned on.
  2. synchronizing data files

If I understand your question, the answer is no. If you edit project A on PC 1, and then you make a different edit to project B on PC 2, there is no automated way to synchronize the two projects such that project A and project B are the same. There are various ways to move project A to PC 2 (or vice-versa) but that's different. Many TMG users migrate their project from one PC to another but it's up to the user to know which version is "current" and then restore the current version to a PC before editing the project there.
  3. Tranferring TMG Data to a 2nd Computer

In case it wasn't clear, use TMG's Backup and Restore commands. Use Backup on one PC, copy the resulting *.SQZ file to the other PC, and then restore it.
  4. Importing from Family Tree Maker

Ann, if adjusting the Name Style is the only issue with the direct import, you can change that after the import using my free TMG Utility program. It will make short work of changing the name style for all existing name tags. See the Change Name Style feature.
  5. It is very unlikely that Wholly Genes will reveal much about their future plans with regards to technical implementation details. Even with that information, you could never know whether or not other products will catch up with TMG in 2 years time, and you'd have to know more than the technical details. FTM, for example, is not aiming at the same market as TMG, and it's unlikely they will ever add some of the professional-grade features that are in TMG now. That's not to say FTM is not a good tool; it's just aimed at a very broad market.
  6. Person Details Window

The "Tag Editing" toolbar has Add, Delete, and Make Primary. You can show that toolbar, and drag it to the top of the screen to dock it. It doesn't have "Edit", but you can double-click to edit a tag.
  7. V7 Person View details limitation?

It sounds like that area of the window is too short to display all three lines. I tried to recreate that here and I was unable to do so; I fiddled with font sizes and window sizes, etc. I use the new v7 window sizing method, which is on by default. Did you choose the old v5/v6 resizing method? (You change that via preferences.) Perhaps you should try choosing "Standard" from the Layouts pull-down menu in the toolbar. The layout choice is the only pull-down menu in the standard toolbars.
  8. GUI

My advice: don't feed the trolls
  9. Master Tag Type List

I added my comment as an "FYI" only; I was not proposing it as an alternative to the Import/Export proposal. I am also well-aware that as of January 2008 TMG Utility does not support TMG v7. That is a temporary issue, and it is very likely that TMG Utility for TMG v7 will be available long before an Import/Export facility for Tag Types is added to TMG.
  10. Vietnamese names with accents

The article describes a technique for displaying Unicode text on a VFP-generated form, but specifically says that the data must be stored outside of VFP, so this is a user interface solution only. To leverage this so-called solution, TMG would have to store all text data outside of VFP. That would mean extensive changes to all of the major facilities in TMG including reports, filters, and dozens of other facilities. The end result would be a fragile mess (in software terms). No sane software designer would recommend that solution for a major application like TMG. In addition, as if any more disincentives were needed, it would be a big job to rewrite the many (hundreds?) of TMG forms to use the controls the article advocates. The article describes a little hack that someone did to implement a tiny application and the solution simply doesn't apply to a large application like TMG. The article title is misleading: the data is not stored in VFP, and using VFP to create a form or two of a user interface is an uncommon use of the tool. I do not have a solution to the problem of how to add unicode support to TMG other than to rewrite TMG to use a different database engine than VFP. If there was a practical solution that didn't involve a complete rewrite, Wholly Genes would have done it.
  11. Master Tag Type List

FYI: TMG Utility has a feature to copy sentences between projects and/or between datasets.
  12. Vietnamese names with accents

IMO, modifying an application the size of TMG using the technique described on that page is impractical.
  13. I think there is a way to do it from within TMG, but I forget the details and I don't have time to look right now. I suggest you open the property window for one of the exhibits and look for some way to export it. The terminology may refer to converting the image from internal to external. Also, my TMG Utility program (which currently only works with TMG v6.12 and previous), will export all internal images using the Export Images feature. That page includes step-by-step instructions for converting all internal images to external. In this case, the exhibits are converted from internal exhibits to external exhibitds as they are moved. If you do not want to convert the exhibits, but instead just want copies of the images, ask me for instructions. I think there is a way to do that, but I forget off the top of my head. TMG Utility is free.
  14. Teresa, resolution and DPI don't really apply when discussing images that are rendered on a monitor. Resolution is the number of dots per inch (printers) or pixels per inch (monitors), and monitors are low-resolution devices compared to printers. Most monitors are approximately 100 pixels per inch, whereas printers are usually a multiple of that. As a result, the on-screen version of an image is typically displayed without regard to resolution. Programs reserve some window space for the image, and if the alloted space does not allow for all the pixels to be shown, the program resizes the image to fit the alloted space. Word processing applications (or other applications that print images) will take resolution into account, and they will both (A) resize the on-screen version of the image to show a WYSIWYG view and ( adjust the resolution when printing so that the image prints at the highest possible resolution while maintaining the user's desired page layout.
  15. Change place styles

This thread is about Place Styles, but you seem to be discussing Name Styles. For places, a single place record can have only a single Place Style assigned to it. There are ways around that limitation, but they all involve creating extra place records where the visible data for the place is the same but the Place Style is different. Yes, you certainly can add Name tags and assign specific Name Styles to those Name tags. The same basic limitation applies, however: you can only assign a single Name Style to a single Name tag. If you want to use one Name Style for one appearance of the name and a different Name Style for some other appearance of the same name then you have to create two Name tags and assign one style to one and the other style to the other.
  16. Change place styles

A place record can have only one Place Style assigned to it, and the style can't be customized, so I am not sure what you mean by "individual record styles that I have set manually." The TMG Utility feature allows you to change all places with Place Style "A" to Place Style "B". You can also add a text filter to limit the change to a subset of places with Place Style "A". See the help page.
  17. That would explain it, especially if UFT didn't handle resolution properly when it resized the image.
  18. You didn't say what we didn't answer. If a picture appears thumbnail size when you think it shouldn't, the most likely cause is incorrect resolution. If that's not it, then perhaps the image is simply the wrong size. If that's not it, then perhaps there is some issue with how the word processor is handling the image. If it's not one of those issues, then I'm stumped. If you want to make the internal exhibits into external exhibits, you can use TMG Utility to do so. I don't think that will fix the issue you described, but if you want them external for other reasons, there's an easy way to get there.
  19. TMG Utility does not merge sources, but it will Change Citations. So, for example, you can change all citations that point to source 1 and make them point to source 2. That may or may not be a good idea. It might come in handy if you decided that there was no useful difference between the two sources. If that was true of many of your sources, then you could re-arrange all the citations to those sources to point to a single source. Then, you can delete the other sources which will be orphans (no citations to them). I am not sure that the Change Citations feature will help you... It depends on what you decide to do with the unnamed sources.
  20. Jim has given a pretty complete reply but I will add one other factor. The print size of an image is determined by the resolution of the image. If the resolution is set to 300 pixels/inch, then a 600x600 image will print at 2" x 2". If you change the resolution to 100 pixels/inch, then the picture will be 6" x 6". I believe that MS Word and other word processing programs respect the resolution setting when you import images into documents, so you may have to modify the resolution of the images to get reasonable results when you include exhibits in reports.
  21. Backup options

Judy, I think the default backup location is set in the File > Preferences window. Look there and see if you can find it.
  22. Name-Marr tag post-entry

Judy, You can use a freeware program called "TMG Utility" (link below) which includes various features, including the ability to add Name-Marr tags.
  23. Gedcom witnes import

If you knew of a genealogy program that supports importing witnesses via GEDCOM, you could create a GEDCOM file, import it into the other program, and then import the resulting database into TMG.
  24. Checking for multiple names

I think you can check for two separate conditions: - Has multiple name tags AND - Has a name tag where given name is empty That will capture cases where the empty part is in the primary name but if that's OK then the above will work. Otherwise, you'll have to make the filter a little more complex. Please note that in TMG, some non-primary name tags look like the given name is blank even when it isn't. That's because (A) only a surname was entered in the name tag and ( TMG is inferring the given name. When the given name is inferred, TMG assumes that the given name from the primary name tag should apply to the non-primary name tag in question. You often see inferred given names with Name-Marr tags, for example.
  25. Second Site - Picture Icon

Any web site image used in Second Site can be replaced. In most cases, you put a substitute image in the Input folder (-i) for the site. To replace the icon that is used to indicate that a person (or dog, in this case) has a primary image exhibit, create a file named "picidx.gif" in the Input folder and remake the site. You may have to refresh the page in your browser after making the site to force the browser to use the new image.
