  1. I also have the Expired Trial version issue. When I start TMG as a regular user, I get the expired trial message. If I close out the message and open my project, it behaves as an expired version. If I go to help about, it shows my name, email and the correct unlock code. If I start the program as administrator (right click on the shortcut, etc), I don't get the message to unlock. It is already unlocked and TMG has full functionality.

    I did a clean install of version 9.05 (from 9.01) on a Windows 8.1 computer following instructions in Jim Byram's final Installers topic. After the install, it asked for my unlock information which I did by exiting the normal user start and starting as administrator. After putting in the information, I restarted TMG as a normal user and was again asked to unlock the program. When I restarted as administrator, it was already unlocked and fully functional. The only way I was able to run as a regular user was to unlock TMG as a regular user also. Unfortunately, a week later I'm back to the same situation where starting as a normal user gives me an unlock message (and the program is not fully functional). Starting TMG as administrator does not let me unlock as administrator because it is still unlocked.

    I tried the suggestion above and registered VistaDBCOM20.dll and got the message that is was successful. It made no difference. I've also went through the repair option of the installer and the problem is unchanged. This is the first update done on this computer. The version 9.01 installation was the first TMG installation on a new computer.

    Help in fixing my problem would be greatly appreciated.

  2. Well, after some more trial and error, I found a solution to my problem. If I make the parents of the child non-primary, then there is no reference to the child in the 2 reports I tried (FGS and Journal). The FGS Report options has a choice of "Primary only" parents or "All variations". The choice makes no difference in this issue.

  3. Is there a way to exclude a child from reports? I have recorded an illegitimate child that is a family secret and would like to be able to print out reports without this child. I have been able to exclude the tags, but have been unable to print reports without listing this child. On the FGS, I get a page with the father and mother, the childs name and no tags. In the Journal Report, the child is listed along with the father and mother, but all tags are suppressed.

    Am I missing a setting somewhere that would exclude this child from reports?

  4. I then closed it and went into the project I want to transfer over, on my pc. Everything went well with the export of my gedcom until I went to press "finish" to burn it onto a CD and it came up with words to the effect that the file was running somewhere else.

    To get your backup to your new laptop, you should backup to your desktop's hard drive and then burn a CD with your burning software. To write directly from an application, your computer would have to have packet writing software such as Nero's InCD or Sonic's DLA installed on each computer. In my experience, using the standard burning software is much more reliable.

  5. I tried automated updates on the help menu and "download and run." I tried re-installing. Same results all around. I have TMG in the programs folder, in a directory called "master genealogist." Before I did the clean uninstall, I had it in the default-named folder.

    When did you do the clean uninstall? Once done, the updater files will not work. You would need to download the trial version and then activate with the serial number and email address that you used for the original ver. 6 install. With a clean install you will have to reset all your preferences and the layout will revert to the stanadrd, but any customized layouts will still be available and you can revert to your desired layout.

  6. If you set it to produce the report as a PDF, you must be viewing it in Acrobat. No?

    No, actually I did an onscreen viewing, I wasn't in Acrobat.

    TDL

    It sounds like you had the destination set to screen. If so, when you "print and save" it prints to the screen, but does not create a file at the same time. To create the file, you have to choose the file destination and then "print and save". It does not create an onscreen view directly, but after completing the file export asks if you want to open the file. If you want to view it choose yes, then it opens the file with Acrobat (Acrobat or other PDF viewer has to be installed).

  7. What exhibit import option would you choose to import a PDF file? I'm scanning official records (birth, death, etc.) in as PDF files.

    To import a PDF, select "Insert New Text", then "External File". You will get a warning that "Only true text files can be imbedded in the report output", but the file thumbnail will show in the exhibits. Double clicking the thumbnail will open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat or whatever application you have associated with that file type.

  8. Ken,

    I did a quick test and John is correct as to how TMG works. If you want to use the NPFX, you must use the advanced wizard option and choose the option to read the structured name tags INSTEAD of the free form test. It's an either or, not both. You must have the other fields or else all you will get is an entry with just Rev. in one of the name fields.

    ...

    So, the following is valid:

    0 @I19@ INDI

    1 NAME Rev. John/Smith/

    2 NPFX Rev.

    2 GIVN John

    2 SURN Smith

    The following is also valid, but given my recollection of the spec, it's illogical:

    0 @I19@ INDI

    1 NAME Rev. John/Smith/

    2 NPFX Rev.

    It's illogical because the set of subtags doesn't define the same name contents as the NAME tag. If the importing program followed the rules, the name would not have a given name or surname.

    ... I mention it because I think it's valid for TMG to interpret the NAME tag and ignore the subtags, or vice-versa. I

    It also makes sense that when you use the TITL tag is shows up as another tag rather than part of the name. TITL is one of the individual attribute structures along with tags such as CAST, OCCU, SSN, etc. and intended as a nobility type title according to the standard.

  9. You might want to try something like Good Sync (http://www.goodsync.com/) especially if you have other files that you would like to keep in sync. It's free for non-commercial use.

    You can also use it to set up an automated sync between the computers and a thumb drive or a sync between the computers. Once set up it's just a couple of clicks to sync.

    Obviously Terry's 4th step above still needs to be followed.

  10.   The problem wasn't with the printer/TMG combination; the problem was with having a network printer as Windows default.  No one was able to explain this, as others on the forum with network printers haven't had this problem.  Maybe this is an issue with just my computer, but it's a simple enough thing to try on yours.

    Wow! I upgraded to a new computer a few months ago. When I did, I changed my default printer to a network printer also. I've tried to figure out why the response time was slower than my old computer even though the new computer had a faster processor, faster hard drive, more and faster memory, etc.

    I timed opening my project with the network printer as default and consistantly get ~30 seconds. I just changed the default to a direct connected printer (but turned off) and it changed to 7 seconds to open the same project. When adding citations, there was a 3-5 second delay before the citation window would open. With the direct connect printer it's instantaneous.

    You aren't the only one with the problem.

    Kevin

    (currently running 6.07)

  11. After upgrading to 6.08, I immediately had a problem backing up my project from a user login that does not have administrator rights.

    I decided to uninstall version 6.08 and reinstall version 6.07. Before uninstalling, I confirmed that the issue had not gone away. I uninstalled version 6.08 and reinstalled 6.07. The problem was corrected and I can backup from any user login now. The problem certainly appears to be with the 6.08 upgrade.

    Kevin

  12. After upgrading to 6.08, I immediately had a problem backing up my project from a user login that does not have administrator rights.

    Prior to upgrading, while logged in as a "normal" user (without administrator rights), I backed up the project. I logged in as administrator (running Windows XP Pro, SP2). I upgraded from 6.07 to 6.08 and then rebooted the computer. I logged in as a normal user again and ran the VFI utility (found and corrected 3 problems), ran reindex and optimize. Then I tried to backup the project again. It now presents an error message with an OLE error. Selecting Ignore gives a different error message as can be seen in the screen captures below.

    TMG_608_Backup.ppt

    If I log in as administrator, the backup function works properly.

  13. Has anybody tried to attach a PDF as an exhibit? Is it possible? Is it expected in a later release?

    I've got a printer/scanner at work that can scan documents directly into a PDF, which is great for creating electronic copies of pension files and other sources that have multiple interesting pages. I haven't figured out a way to attach a PDF as an exhibit to a source.

    Thanks,

    David

    I add the PDF files by choosing the Add Text File option (I use as an external file). I change the file type to "all files" in the browse window and then select the file. You get a message that you can only add true text files in reports. Click OK and the exhibit will be added. When I double click on the exhibit, it opens Acrobat Reader and the file.

    Kevin

  14. You can add the PDF as an exhibit if you add it as a text file. Insert it as new text and an external file. When the dialog box opens to choose the file, change the file type to all files, and then choose your PDF file. You wll get a message that only true text files can be embedded in TMG's report output, but it will add it to the exhibit log. Double clicking on the exhibit will open it in Adobe reader.

  15. Both programs reject the REPO structure since it is completely illegal. Repository records are top level records in a GEDCOM. It is illegal for the repository to be buried in the source record. Note that TMG actually imports this but is having some difficulty with the structure.

    This represents just one of many instances over the years where FTM ignores the GEDCOM specs and does it its own way. The trick is to import this to something like PAF to see if the data gets in and create another GEDCOM from there.

    I don't want to seem argumentative, I'm just trying to become more familiar with the GEDCOM 5.5 standard. When I read the standard, I see the following.

    SOURCE_RECORD: =

    n @<XREF:SOUR>@ SOUR {1:1}

    +1 DATA {0:1}

    +2 EVEN <EVENTS_RECORDED> {0:M}

    +3 DATE <DATE_PERIOD> {0:1}

    +3 PLAC <SOURCE_JURISDICTION_PLACE> {0:1}

    +2 AGNC <RESPONSIBLE_AGENCY> {0:1}

    +2 <<NOTE_STRUCTURE>> {0:M}

    +1 AUTH <SOURCE_ORIGINATOR> {0:1}

    +2 [CONT|CONC] <SOURCE_ORIGINATOR> {0:M}

    +1 TITL <SOURCE_DESCRIPTIVE_TITLE> {0:1}

    +2 [CONT|CONC] <SOURCE_DESCRIPTIVE_TITLE> {0:M}

    +1 ABBR <SOURCE_FILED_BY_ENTRY> {0:1}

    +1 PUBL <SOURCE_PUBLICATION_FACTS> {0:1}

    +2 [CONT|CONC] <SOURCE_PUBLICATION_FACTS> {0:M}

    +1 TEXT <TEXT_FROM_SOURCE> {0:1}

    +2 [CONT|CONC] <TEXT_FROM_SOURCE> {0:M}

    +1 <<SOURCE_REPOSITORY_CITATION>> {0:1}

    +1 <<MULTIMEDIA_LINK>> {0:M}

    +1 <<NOTE_STRUCTURE>> {0:M}

    +1 REFN <USER_REFERENCE_NUMBER> {0:M}

    +2 TYPE <USER_REFERENCE_TYPE> {0:1}

    +1 RIN <AUTOMATED_RECORD_ID> {0:1}

    +1 <<CHANGE_DATE>> {0:1}

    with the source repository at the +1 level and the double brackets... Indicates a subordinate GEDCOM structure pattern of a record, structure, or substructure is to be substituted in place of the enclosing double angle brackets.

    And the source repository record structure is

    SOURCE_REPOSITORY_CITATION: =

    [

    n REPO @XREF:REPO@ {1:1}

    +1 <<NOTE_STRUCTURE>> {0:M}

    +1 CALN <SOURCE_CALL_NUMBER> {0:M}

    +2 MEDI <SOURCE_MEDIA_TYPE> {0:1}

    And later in the example I see

    ...

    0 @6@ SOUR

    1 DATA

    2 EVEN BIRT, DEAT, MARR

    3 DATE FROM Jan 1820 TO DEC 1825

    2 PLAC Madison, Connecticut

    2 AGNC Madison County Court, State of Connecticut

    1 TITL Madison County Birth, Death, and Marriage Records

    1 ABBR VITAL RECORDS

    1 REPO @7@

    2 CALN 13B-1234.01

    2 MEDI Microfilm

    0 @7@ REPO

    1 NAME Family History Library

    1 ADDR 35 N West Temple Street

    2 CONT Salt Lake City, Utah

    2 CONT UT 84150

    ...

    Now the example seems to have an error whereby the MEDIa tag should be at level 3 rather than 2, but I can't see where the structure in the GEDCOM I am importing doesn't follow this standard.

    From my GEDCOM:

    ...

    0 @S058338@ SOUR

    1 TITL St-Gelais Families of North America

    1 AUTH Robert St-Gelais

    1 NOTE @NS583381@

    1 REPO

    2 NOTE @NS583383@

    2 CALN

    3 MEDI Other

    ...

    It does not have an external refernce to the name and address of the repository, but the GEDCOM standard says:

    Systems which do not structure a repository name and address interface should store the information about where the source record is stored in the <<NOTE_STRUCTURE>> of this structure.

    What have I missed, misread, or misunderstood?

    Kevin

  16. If the NOTE tag is subordinate to the source record tag (in other words, 1 NOTE), the text should always be imported to the note field on the Supplemental tab. You'll need to point me to some examples to check.

    Hummm... There are 40 NOTE tags in the sources and all are using xrefs so don't yet see a reason why some would work and others not.

    I've looked throught the sources section of the GEDCOM and found the following patterns.

    - If there is a single NOTE at the +1 level to the SOURce and there is no NOTE at the +1 level to the REPOsitory, then the NOTE shows up in the Supplemental tab.

    - If there are 2 NOTEs at the +1 level to the SOURce and there is no NOTE at the +1 level to the REPOsitory, then sometimes the first and sometimes the second note shows up in the Supplemental tab and the other in the "Not Processed List" (from what I can see, the GEDCOM 5.5 standard allows multiple NOTE structures at the +1 level)

    - NOTEs at the +1 level to the REPOsitory do not show up in the Source Supplemental or Repository Memo fields but sometimes show in the "Not Processed List".

    - The Call Number (CALN) tag is put into the reference field of the Repository Link Entry Screen. The entry is truncated to the 25 characters of this field even though the GEDCOM 5.5 standard allows 120.

    Is there a way to make the call number go to a Call Number source element? Does that require the default source type be modified to add the Call Number element to the footnotes, etc?

    What is the expected behavior for REPOsitory notes? Does the MEDIa tag in the source map to a particular location?

    I've sent you a file with examples to check.

    Kevin

  17. Thanks Jim,

    After unselecting the "Convert widowed SOURce tags" option, all the sources were created.

    However, that leads to the next question/issue. Many of the sources in the GEDCOM have a NOTE tag. For some, that information shows up in the comments box of the Supplemental tab where I expected to see it. For others, the actual note shows up as an unprocessed line in the Import .LST file and for others the note seems to be just "missing". It is not in the source supplemental and not in the unprocessed list. How should these notes be processed during the import?

    Kevin

  18. After importing a large GEDCOM (~143,000 lines), I reviewed the import log file and found a list of source lines that were not processed. I am unable to determine what causes the problem. They seem to be a random selection of the sources. Both processed and unprocessed sources are cited at least once. Yet the process is reproducable. Importing the GEDCOM a second time as another dataset causes the same issue with the same sources "skipped". I've attached a file that extracts the beginning section of the unprocessed source lines from the log file. I've also extracted the section of the GEDCOM where the sources start. Is this a TMG problem or a GEDCOM file problem?

  19. A solution other than copy/paste in Word?

    Well, it seems rather pointless to have the option to print a blank FGS and then have to go into Word to add and format the missing text. A Word or RFT document could also have been designed to have the shaded areas and boxes that the PDF version has, but doesn't.

    I could always build my own, but then it wouldn't be a TMG feature, would it? :)

  20. When creating a blank Family Group Sheet using ver 6.07, I get a different sheet depending on the type of file I choose. The PDF and text type files have lines titled Birth, Marriage, Death, Burial, Father, Mother for the Subject and lines titled Birth, Marriage, Death, Father, Mother for the Spouse. For Word documents and RTF file types, all those lines are blank. The children however have the Birth, Marriage, Death, Burial lines for all file types.

    Is there a fix for this? Examples Attached

  21. Jim,

    Persons 2:3696, 2:3702, 2:3707, 2:3713 each have one E-table record in DSID 1 and another in DSID 2. These four person records are grouped together. Maybe you can see some sort of pattern?

    Other than they probably all are the remaining record of a duplicate merge in the #2 data set. They were not all done at the same time and these people never existed in the #1 dataset. In fact there is very little overlap between the #1 and #2 data sets. Once I had a successful merge, I planned to eliminate the few remaining dulplicates that would link the 2 data sets.

    For info, the #2 set was imported as a GEDCOM from another person and that file resulted from merging at least 3 different data sources. There were many duplicates that had to be reconciled and in some cases 3 records of the same person. There were also many (100-200) unlinked people that were apparently "leftovers" from his previous merge of the three sets.

    Kevin

  22. Jim,

    Thanks for the response. I have updated my installation to 6.07. I have not added anything to that project since the problem was discovered. I had spent quite a bit of time cleaning up one of the data sets before the merge and have several backups of the previous few days. I have not tried to see how far back the problem exists since I'm hoping for a fix. (I probably had ~60 hours of work in the last week before the merge.)

    I will check my other project to see if a similar problem exists.

    Kevin
