  1. Have not used Fusion so can't make a recommendation. I've just become aware of VirtualBox an open source virtualization product, but have not tried it yet.
  2. Please note this answer applies to running TMG in a Virtual Machine on an Intel Processor Mac using Parallels Save the file to a folder in the Windows Virtual Machine, NOT a folder mapped to the Mac file system. I'm running Office 2008 on the Mac side, so TMG can't handle opening the file after it is generated. See: File > Preferences > Program Options > Reports Choose either Never ask; do not open the file, or Always ask I then navigate to the folder where I've saved the file, right click then mouse over Open with, and choose Microsoft Word.app(Mac)
  3. GOTERM and other problems

Mac equivalent is called The Dock That makes sense, the virtual machine has to be running before you can start TMG. Looks like backup ~ restore is OK with \\.PSF\... so my comment in previous post about TMG having problems with a path that does not start with a drive letter does not apply at least for backup & restore.
  4. GOTERM and other problems

As near as I can tell TMG has problems with a path that does not start with a drive letter. \\.PSF\... You will NOT be able to save project files in the Mac Documents folder. This means you have remember when navigating to your project folder you can't navigate from the start menu My Documents [which is redirected to the Mac Documents folder] instead you have to access them via C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\My Documents\The Master Genealogist v7, or wherever you've saved your projects. Regarding Data_paths.txt read item 2d in Help > Customizing Data File Storage It looks like once you get TMG setup and working with a Data_paths.txt file you can delete the The Master Genealogist v7 folder along with subfolders from the Mac Documents folder and TMG won't recreate them.
  5. GOTERM and other problems

Glad to hear you got it working.
  6. GOTERM and other problems

Please note this answer applies to running TMG in a Virtual Machine on an Intel Processor Mac using Parallels Greetings Michael I just completed a little testing and I can replicate the GOTERM error. If the virtual machine is configured to redirect the Windows My Documents folder to Documents (Mac) AND Data_paths.txt file does not exist, I can get the GOTERM error. There are two ways I've found to resolve the problem. The simple choice is to disable (un-check) Documents as My Documents in Windows, this is found in the Shared Profile Options on the virtual machine Configuration Editor. This choice makes the Windows My Documents folder the default for the virtual machine. More complicated but IMO the better choice is to enable Documents as My Documents in Windows. This redirects the Windows My Documents to Documents on your Mac. However using this choice you MUST create a Data_paths.txt in the TMG Program Files folder [C:\Program Files\The Master Genealogist v7] As I mentioned in my previous post this is covered in TMG Help: Data File Storage, For Advanced Users & Customizing Data File Storage. In the example I posted earlier, you would substitute your Windows user name inside the brackets and in the path. In either configuration the TMG data files are saved in the Windows path.
  7. GOTERM and other problems

Michael Perhaps posting the full text of the GOTERM error messages, might help someone diagnose that problem. Just a thought. Have you tried setting the Check for Updates and Check for Messages to 0 in the TMG preferences? Since my last post there has been a OS X update and I've updated Parallels to build 5600, WinXP to SP3, and TMG to v7.02 I can't think of any other virtual machine settings that might effect TMG

  9. TMG v7.02

If you can get to the Add Person window, have you tried Setup > Reset template? Or does the lock-up occur before you get that far?
  10. GOTERM and other problems

Please note this answer applies to running TMG in a Virtual Machine on an Intel Processor Mac using Parallels This may help with TMG forgetting the last project. I'm not seeing the GOTERM issue, I'm running TMG 7.1 in a WinXP Pro Virtual Machine on a MacBook Pro, Parallels Desktop 3.0 Build 5584 Check your settings for Shared Folders, and Shared User Profile in the virtual machine With settings listed below installing/running TMG 7 creates The Master Genealogist v7 folder and all the required sub folders in the Mac path: Macintosh HD\Users\username\Documents Shared Folders: Share Windows folders to Mac Checked: All Windows disks Checked: Mount virtual disks to Mac desktop Unchecked: Enable Spotlight processing Share Mac folders to Windows Unchecked: All Mac disks Checked: Home folder Checked: User-defined folders Checked: Map folders to drive letters Shared User Profile: Shared Profile Status Checked: Enabled Use Mac User Profile in Windows Checked: Desktop as Desktop in Windows Checked: Documents as My Documents in Windows Checked: Pictures as My Pictures in Windows Checked: Music as My Music in Windows To resolve the issue of TMG forgetting the last used project I had to use a Data_paths.txt file as described in Customizing Data File Storage. See: Help Topic: Data File Storage, For Advanced Users. I don't remember if I had to recreate The Master Genealogist v7 folder structure in C:\Documents and settings\username\My Documents\ manually or if TMG created it. In either case it needs to exist in both the Mac path and the Windows path. I believe if you delete it from the Mac path TMG will recreate it, the folders will be empty, I just ignore them. Projects & related files are stored in the Windows path. My Data_paths.txt file looks like this: [Glenn] UserData=C:\Documents and settings\Glenn\My Documents\The Master Genealogist v7\ An alternative may be to NOT share the User Profile.
  11. Search always failing

If I use v* in the search term I get some results, vc* and vcf* return nothing
  12. TMG7 Default folders

I didn't do anything special with the VM when I installed v7. this is how I have Shared Folders set up in the VM: --Share Windows folders to Mac-- Enabled (checked) All Windows disks Enabled Mount virtual disks to Mac desktop Disabled (un-checked) Enable Spotlight processing --Share Mac folders to Windows-- Disabled All Mac disks --- Enabled Home folder Enabled User-defined folders Enabled Map folders to drive letters Other than User-defined folders & Map folders to drive letters I believe the others are the default Parallels settings
  13. TMG7 Default folders

Are you using the default Windows paths, or are you storing your user data in OS X via the Parallels Shared Folders? I'm running v7 on a MacBook Pro / Parallels / Win XP Pro using the default Windows folders and have not experienced the problems you describe. To send reports to the OS X folders you have to map the destination report folder to a drive in the VM as the report writer will not recognize shared drive Z: folders see the reply I posted here: http://www.whollygenes.com/forums201/index...?showtopic=9708
  14. Running TMG under Parallels

Robin contacted me off-list and I replied off-list. Since others will have this issue with Parallels & TMG I'm posting my reply to Robin here. Some additional issues are also noted: I'm seeing an issue with both v6.12 & v7 where I can't overwrite an existing report. TMG recognized there is a report and asks if I want to overwrite, if I answer Yes, I get a message dialog that says "The output file is in use by another application or cannot be deleted." Retry? Retry brings up the same message repeatedly, the simple workaround is to just give the file a new name. On occasion I get an error message that the file cannot be created, when this occurs I find a 0Kb file in the report folder which has to be deleted. Also this isn't consistent, at times I get another error message and I think it is related to opening the report after it is generated, in those instances the file is created. I set the option in TMG Report Preferences to: Never ask; do not open the file. TMG isn't the only win app that has issues of this type running in a VM and saving files to OS X.
  15. I've noted that Ancestry.com, DNA Fingerprint, DNA Heritage, and Relative Genetics are reporting mtDNA markers in HVR3. One can also determine HVR3 markers reported by Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation. The mtDNA template lacks a column for HVR3. Thanks.
  16. I found this update notice in my on-line Profile @ DNA Heritage: If you've had testing done by DNA Heritage you will want update the values that have been changed in your TMG DNA Log. EDIT#1 Attached is the updated DNA Heritage Template. v.7 Windows Vista users should copy the file to C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\The Master Genealogist v7 v.7 Windows 2000 and XP users should copy the file to C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\The Master Genealogist v7 v.6.12 Windows 2000 and XP users should copy the file to C:\Program Files\The Master Genealogist v.6.12 Windows Vista users should consult http://www.whollygenes.com/files/tmg6andwinvista.pdf The file needs to be renamed from dna heritage.zip to dna heritage.dna EDIT#2 Apparently the File Attachment bit isn't working today, I've tried a couple of times but the file does not attach. You can find it here http://gilbert-genealogy.info/files/dna%20heritage.zip EDIT#3 File is attached here, it will still be available at link above. dna_heritage.zip
  17. TMG performance issue with Clooz 2.

I used to use Clooz, but after switching to TMG I found it more work than it was worth. Too much redundant data entry. I kept my document numbering scheme, and just enter the number in TMG, depending on the source type the document number goes in the citation reference field or the repository reference field.
  18. Mystery Source Number

The source has probably been set to inactive. To see all sources click the More>> button in the lower right of the Master Source List window, just above the Help button. The Active?: control is on the General tab of the Source Definition window.
  19. Pedigree - Unable to output

Have you installed TMG following the directions given at: http://www.whollygenes.com/files/tmg6andwinvista.pdf
  20. Another "TMG under Parallels" question

I have an older version of Roxio - CD Creator 5, which has Direct CD, I don't use it anymore, but I think using it would permit a direct backup / burn from TMG to CD, I also think you have to finalize CDs created with Direct CD before they are readable in other drives & computers. Check the help file, one of the choices is close CD to read on any computer, and I think you'd have to do that to make the CD readable in the Mac drive. Perhaps this is the issue you are having with your CDs appearing blank when you load them in the Mac. I'm not sure about Direct CD loading at startup, but I it probably could be setup so it does and is the default action taken when you insert a blank CD. There is also CD burning utility that is part of WinXP (I think it is a Roxio product as well) and it won't work directly from TMG to CD, thus the two step process, backup to hard drive, burn .sqz file to CD. CDs created with the built in WinXP burn utility will open on the Mac, and that is what I'd use if I didn't have a network. Because OS X is controlling the hardware, I'm not sure you can burn a CD from a Parallels virtual machine running XP or any other operating system. So installing the Roxio SW in XP on the Mac is probably a waste of time. I could be wrong. Not sure if CDs burned on the Mac will open in WinXP, never tried, actually don't think I've ever burned a CD with the Mac OK 19:00 PST I just tested and a CD burned in the MacBook Pro WILL open on PC - (Win XP Pro SP2)
  21. Another "TMG under Parallels" question

I use TMG on MacBook Pro / Parallels Desktop 3.0 Build 5160 / WinXP Pro SP 2 I see the same issue, this can be resolved. 1. Shut down the Virtual Machine, but leave Parallels Desktop running. 2. In Mac Finder create a subfolder in Documents, I named mine TMG Reports. 3. In Parallels > Edit > Virtual Machine 4. Resource > Shared Folders 5. Enable User-Defined folders 6. Add [ + ] Name: whatever (this will be what shows up in your Parallels Shares) Path: Choose... /Users/your_user_name/Documents/TMG Reports (or whatever you named yours) Enabled checked 7. Map folders to drive letters checked 8. OK 9. Restart Virtual Machine You will find a new network drive Y: (or whatever) and you should be able to write your reports directly from TMG to that drive. As to burning a CD directly from TMG - that depends on what software one uses to burn CDs the built in Win XP Roxio(?) software isn't capable of of a direct burn from TMG to CD, it takes two steps, backup to hard drive, then burn the backup file to CD. I'm not even sure you can burn a CD from a Virtual Machine on the Mac, never tried. I expect writing the .sqz file to the Documents folder and then a burn to CD using the Mac software is the only way. Have not tried folder actions/script.
  22. TMG and Mac/Parallels

See this article in the Parallels KB Item #8 http://forum.parallels.com/showthread.php?...ghlight=burn+CD It might provide some insight into problem. I expect you will have to save the .sqz file to hard drive and then burn to CD as Terry suggests. Also if inserting a blank CD, do that AFTER starting the virtual machine.
  23. Slave Schedule

Don't have any slaves or slave owners so can't help with tags. For source citations replace population schedule, with slave schedule.
  24. Starting to use Exhibits

The "Image" window may be hidden. Toggle it off, and then back on, this will make it the active window, next on the menu bar Window > Center the current window. This will bring it to the front and centered. Then you can size it and drag it where you want it, finally save the layout. SecondSite is the way to go for web publishing from TMG. You will want your exhibits as external files for use with SS.
