You may have this solved by now, but if not try running the installer as administrator. By this I mean right click and choose run as administrator from context menu. DO NOT allow the installer to run TMG at the end of the install process. Reboot Windows, right click TMG and again choose run as administrator, enter your unlock data but do nothing else, quit TMG and reboot windows. From now on run TMG normally.

I upgraded my VM to Windows 10 without any problems, however today is the last opportunity for those who have not already upgraded to get it done.

I have not upgraded to Windows 10 yet, but I think you are on the right track as well.

Have you tried sending a screen preview report to the Print to PDF (Mac Desktop) printer?

You'll get a file on your Mac Desktop named: Windows 8.1 printed document.pdf which you can rename, also you should be able to print this file from the Mac without involving TMG or Windows.

As others have mentioned the only way to run TMG is in a Windows operating system.

You didn't mention if you had a TMG backup .sqz file or not. If you did perhaps someone locally would be willing to do a restore and create a GEDCOM for you.

If you only need to use TMG long enough to get your data out in the form of a GEDCOM and you can't find a local TMG user willing to help you, you can use Boot Camp to create a partition on your Mac drive, that will make your system dual boot and enable you install Windows XP & TMG 6, be sure to put a copy of the GEDCOM on the external drive, then when done you can delete the Boot Camp partition.

You've been without TMG since 2008 and it doesn't sound like you want the hassle of two operating systems so I wouldn't recommend the virtual machine route. The only reason I'm using a Parallels Virtual Machine and Windows is to use TMG, TMG Utility, SecondSite and one other Windows program. There is some decent Mac genalogy software, Reunion, does a good job of importing a TMG GEDCOM, see http://gilbert-genealogy.info/otherwebs.html for my experiences with importing. Mac FamilyTree looks like a good program, and there is a Mac version of Family Tree Maker.

I'm writing this on my iPad, my MacBook is off for the night so I can't look, but I believe you'll find Boot Camp in the Mac Disk Utilities.

I have not done it, but I believe it should simply upgrade the operating system like an upgrade to Win 10 would do on a PC.

You receive this warning due to the fact that the Parallels Display Adapter driver is not included to the list of drivers compatible for Windows 10 Update.

If you have the latest build of Parallels 10 (10.2.2-29105) you can upgrade to Win 10 by following the steps in either KB article so upgrading to P11 isn't necessary.

The free upgrade to Win 10 from Win 7/8 will be available until the end of July 2016, so there is time.

I have not heard from anyone running TMG in a virtual machine that has upgraded to Win 10.

FWIW I have a friend that has a fairly recent Dell computer he gets a similar warning from the Win 10 upgrade ... drivers are not compatible, he contacted Microsoft Support and was told that they are "working on updating drivers, they will be available later, then you'll be able to upgrade."

Does that mean the Win 10 upgrade is still a work in progress or did MS support just blow him off? Only time will tell.

I upgraded to Parallels 11 but I'm still using Win 8.1, even with P11 the Windows 10 upgrade advisor will tell you the VM's graphics device is not compatible, however there is an Upgrade to Windows 10 button on the P11Action Menu, which starts a upgrade wizard...

I'm in no rush to get Win 10, the only Windows programs I use are TMG, TMG Utility, SecondSite, and a program that converts .csv files to HTML.

I usually use Coherence view mode, when I leave Coherence I'm in Window view mode so that may explain why I've never experienced the focus issue.

Sorry that didn't work. Since printing from other programs works it's strictly a TMG porblem, at least you can get printed output with the work around.

I believe replacing the .dll file is the expected action.

If you really need to print directly from TMG another attempt at a clean install may be the way to go.

From the post in which you describe uninstalling and deleting folders it's not clear that you deleted the two TMG9 folders in ProgramData as described in the Jim Byram's post on doing a clean install

I would add after you uninstall and remove the folders reboot the Virtual Machine.

After restarting run tmg9setup.exe as administrator by right clicking and choosing Run as administrator from the context menu.

At the end of the installation process UNCHECK the option to open/run TMG we don't want TMG to run at this point.

Reboot the VM again.

After the restart Right Click the TMG desktop icon and again choose Run as administrator from the context menu, if prompted enter your unlock information do nothing else but that, exit TMG, if not prompted to unlock do nothing, exit TMG.

Reboot the VM again, after the restart run TMG normally.

No guarantee any of this will return print function to TMG but I'm out of other ideas.

This won't solve the printing problem in TMG, but since you can print from other applications a work around would be to save the FGS report as a word.doc, you could then open and print with Word or Pages, or save it as .rtf and open and print with TextEdit.

I tested printing a FGS from the Report Definition Screen by selecting the Printer radio button in the Report Destination frame, and from the Screen Preview by clicking the [Printer] button I also created a PDF by selecting the Save to: radio button, choosing Adobe Reader (PDF) in File type, and specifying a file name additionally I was able to create a .rtf and .doc file all without problem.

On my system testing reveals that I cannot control the Windows Default printer in the Windows Control Panel > Devices and Printers, however by activating Mac System Preferences > Printers and Scanners and setting the default printer it immediately changes the default printer in Windows.

You might want to reinstall Parallels Tools - with the VM running Actions > Reinstall Parallels Tools, Parallels Tools facilitates much of the communication between the guest OS and OS X after reinstalling Parallels Tools you must restart Windows.

Finally you may want to try resetting the report to the defaults [Reset Defaults] button on the Report Definition Screen.

I only run 4 Windows programs in my virtual machine TMG, Second Site, TMG Utility and a program that converts .csv files to html. I have not been doing much genealogy lately, the last time I started the virtual machine was a couple of weeks ago to run Windows updates. I have not noticed what you describe.

TMG 9 on Mac in 2015

This article is an update to the TMG 8 on Mac article on the Wholly Genes Forum which was written for older versions of Mac operating systems and older versions of Parallels.

New Macs run Yosemite and currently Parallels is at version 10.

I have been running TMG on a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014), Intel Core i7 2.5 GHz with 16Gb Ram in a Windows 8.1 Pro Upd. 1 64bit virtual machine under Parallels 10 since the summer of 2014 with no particularly special configuration to Parallels, Windows 8, or TMG.

Attached is a PDF I compiled as I tested TMG in preparation of writing a new TMG 9 on Mac article, however the only recommendations I have at this time are the same recommendations I’d make for anyone running TMG on Windows 7, 8 or above. Right click the setup .exe file and choose run as administrator from the context menu, do not start TMG at the end of the installation process, instead reboot your computer, then on the very first run of TMG and the first run only, right click the TMG short cut on your desktop, or in the start menu and choose run as administrator from the context menu, enter your TMG unlock information and exit TMG, after these steps are completed run TMG normally.

There are some Mac/Parallels users that recommend configuring Parallels to not share the Mac Home folder with Windows. This will put your TMG files on the Windows side and may be desirable for some users. Since the only Windows applications I’m using are TMG, TMG Utility, and Second Site I find it more convenient to have report output saved in the Mac document folder, reports are available when the virtual machine is not running, and Word, Excel, PDF etc. output can be opened with Mac applications.

You are welcome. For future reference to be clear what I think you did.

Right click the TMG icon selected Run as administrator, checked for update and got the 9.04 update installed without problems.

What I've seen so far is everything works fine with \\psf\Home\Documents\The Master Genealogist v9\... In all path settings in preferences. The EXCEPTION is a Restore operation which requires a drive letter instead of \\psf

I have not tested Second Site yet, but I have used TMG Utility without problems.

Running as administrator does not mean logging into Windows with an account with administrative privileges, it means right clicking a program icon and selecting Run as administrator from the context menu.

I install TMG 9.x by logging into Windows with an administrator account, right click tmg9setup.exe select Run as administrator from the context menu. When the install finishes I do not run the program, I reboot the VM, I then log into Windows with a standard user account, right click the TMG icon, select Run as administrator from context menu enter my admin PW, TMG starts and asks to be unlocked, I enter my unlock info and exit TMG. Thereafter I run TMG normally in a standard user account.

Windows 7+ for normal daily use should be run with a standard user account, it's not an unauthorized access issue, it's a privileges issue! Administrator accounts have elevated privileges. If you are logged in as a standard user and you do something that needs administrative privileges you will be prompted to enter an admin password, sort of like when you install a Mac program.

The installation fails, so I'm stuck on 9.00.

Running Parallels 9.

I'm guessing the path is different than the installer assumes. Is there an easy workaround?

I'd suggest copying the setup file tmg9setup.exe from the Mac Downloads folder to the Windows Downloads folder (or any folder in user space on the Windows side). If you are running Win 8 in your virtual machine run the setup as administrator, it probably wouldn't hurt to run it as administrator in Win 7 or XP. To run as administrator instead of double clicking, right click and choose Run as administrator from the context menu. You may have to uninstall 9.0 first.

Let us know if that solves the problem.

If you elect to go the uninstall / reinstall route

Download the trial version from the Wholly Genes website http://whollygenes.swmirror.com/tmg9setup.exe copy the tmg9setup.exe file from your Mac downloads folder to the downloads folder (or any folder in user space) on the Windows side. If you are not sharing user folders between OS X & Windows, use your favorite Windows web browser to download the setup file to the Windows download folder. Close TMG if it is running, go to the Windows Control Panel uninstall TMG 9, navigate to the folder where tmg9setup.exe is located, double click to run it. If you are running Windows 8 in your virtual machine you might want instead to right click the setup file and choose Run as administrator. This will install TMG 9.04 which is the latest version.

I've been testing TMG 9.x on my new MacBook, Parallels 10, Windows 8.1 upd 1 without a data_paths.txt file and so far the only issue I've identified is Restore fails when the path specification begins with \\psf selecting a mapped drive Z: or whatever works. Most all of the shortcut keys work but a few don't.

Having read this post I setup a data_paths.txt file and found that TMG did create the user folders in the specified path, in this case

Download the 30 day trial version and install it. Have your unlock info handy as you may need to unlock again after the update.

The method outlined by Jim Byram making a dummy project and replacing files worked for me.

I made a backup of the sample project, changed the file extension to .zip opened it with Windows, worked my way down through the folders until I got to the project folder, deleted all the files, then copy & pasted ALL the files from the 'old' project folder in. It is not necessary to ZIP the old project folder, in fact I wound up having to extract the .zip file from the person I'm helping, so you can just copy & paste from old project folder into the dummy backup project folder. Windows will compress them, when it finished I changed the extension back to .sqz and restored to a new folder to keep things separate.

It turned out that the project I was asked to assist with had internal exhibits so the .zip file was 26+Mb.

As things stand now I installed V 8.08 on the persons computer, they are wanting only select people and do some clean-up prior to making a GEDCOM, so they have some work to do.
