  1. Email sent!

I have another related question as well. Those that show GEDCOM, how can I change it back to Address? If I click 'tag type' in the entry, Address isn't listed.

Suspect you'll have a bit of problem going from one group to anohter Kevin.

Address is in the Address tag group and Gedcom is in the Other Event group

Either settle for Residence as the tag type instead, or

be prepared to do a few copy/pastes between tags or

do some cosmetic edits to the data you want in the gedcom group to get them into the clipboard and set up a new tag and use F3 to repeat the info from the gedcom tag or

check out whether or not John Cardinal's TMG utility might be able to help

  2. Is there a maximum number of relationships allowed in the Relationship Calculator? It seems as if I only will get three maximum when I know of instances where there are more. For instance there is an individual (Joe) who has the following realtionship to my wife:

    2nd cousin 1 time removed.....

    Thank you

    Mike

    Mike,

I haven't looked for a setting to change but can add that one of my complicated cases of multiple relationships shows at least 5 in the calculator.

  3. I know someone in this thread mentioned not liking ancestry, BUT they currently have the St Cath's BMD index images for free, have had for quite some time, so it may well be one of the "draw them in" always available databases, I don't know.

The indexing can be a bit wonky, as the dutiful indexers often carefully recorded the last on the page, which was often the out of sequence added people, but you can generally get to the pages you want to check fairly quickly, particularly if you use FreeBMD as the finding aid first.

If you go to England Birth marriage and death indexes

    http://www.ancestry.com/search/locality/db...showPaging=true

you should see births, marriages and deaths 1837-1983 (images), as well as the 1983-2004 indexes (which aren't images, but transcripts or db entries), along with the FreeBMD indexes for the same periods

  4. .. in the bottom left corner of the "general" tab there is a box for primary that you can select.

    which is what I thought.

BUT, if you've copied a person with a primary exhibit attached,

    THEN added the correct exhibit

and then deleted the previous primary one which actually related to the source person for the copy

    Then

I cannot seem to make the box for primary appear.

I've done a VFI (no problems found), changed focus to another person and come back to see if that fooled it to bringing back the check box.

I had to resort to deleting and reinserting the image

  5. I would find the ability to sort the focus group by birthdate or death death very helpful. When doing census work, I like to add all descendants, and it would very helpful to have them sorted by birth date, so I could easily delete those that were born after the census was taken.

Thought I already had a post with this as a wishlist item, but I can't find it again, so I'm a definite "me too" on this one.

Both birth and death date orders would be wonderful for quickly winnowing down a focus group to those of more immediate interest in lots of situations.

  6. :( I'm trying to get my TMG 4 data set into TMG 6 (or even TMG 5 if it would help) and I keep getting the error message:: "Found 6 errors of structure." It won't allow me to go farther. I'm really nervous, as there is ALOT of work in that dbase! :o I got a new laptop and I'm trying to get everything up to speed on it. HELP! Thanks in advance.

    Debbie

Can you explain how you are trying to get your data from one version to the other?

Are you using the v6 Menu >File >Import from TMG v4 or v4 backup?

Before you started did you do the file maintenance routines so you were starting with as clean a database as possible?

  7. Hi Rosamond,

Can't tell you what any of those mean, but first thing I'd do right now is a full File Maintenance > Validate File Integrity (VFI)

followed by File Maintenance > Optimize

Repeating both until no errors found.

Then shut down tmg and open it up again.

and hope that they all go away.

It is extremely unlikely that your data is affected in any way.

If the above doesn't fix the error messages then try posting the actual circumstances the messages occurr in.

It also pays to do these maintenance routines every so often.

Re missing images, have you altered your paths lately?

There are utilities that will move things around, or you can use the check exhibit path bit of the VFI above to list all the new paths TMG should look to find any missing images.

    Heaps of options in fact

  8. ...In last week I have had problems with TMG "graying out" and freezing up whenever I try to;

    1. open an existing tag to edit it;

    2. Add a new tag, to an existing person

If I press the the "Esc" key I can get out of this problem, back to the normal screen.

    ...

I occasionally get this when I have the Project Explorer (PE) open and instead of a normal entry in the list, there's a blank line.

When it's the blank line person I'm trying to edit, I have problems, which disappear once I've convinced the PE to refresh itself properly.

  9. Two things spring to mind, neither of which I've checked.

    a) are you actually selecting the roles/sentences tab after selecting Add from the first tag type screen

    B) are you in advanced mode (a preference setting for Data Entry under File>Preference)

    Good luck

No idea where that smilie came from, I was trying to type a B) ie b followed by ) in case that also turns into a smilie!

  10. Oh, I wish that the advanced preference option for gedcoms applied to File import as well, instead of just to export.

Everytime I update my World Connect and other online gedcom databases, I run the gedcom into a separate TMG project to check I've got what I expected.

And it's a right pain having to navigate from the TMG program folder to where I want to be every time.

How do others overcome this - other than gritting their teeth and bearing it?

It wouldn't be so bad if the path didn't start from the program folder but My Documents instead OR even better, remembered the last path.

  11. Attached is a screen shot of an error I've just hit.

I think it's associated with the PE deciding not to show all the entries.

This latter may or may not be related to the fact that I've just added the 3rd identical name in a row into my db.

As far as I can remember, this is what all I did.

Postioned at ID 47513 (who is the son of 47502, the one where the error comes up, and probably the blank line on the PE)

    I added a brother (47515)

then double clicked on his father, 47502, who came up correctly.

F4 to add a census tag for him brought up this error message (Unknown member ROTMPOBJ 9 MNUOBJTMG.MADDTAG)

I can ignore it and add the tag using another of the principals, but not 47502 when he's shown as the blank line.

I can however find his father in the PE and expand the list down to him and add the tag to him when he's accessed via the expanded PE though.

From past experience once the PE has been refreshed via some method, probably closing TMG (just closing and reopening PE doesn't do it), the blank line will disappear and all will be well again.

Merry xmas, guess I'd better go and get ready for my celebrations!

  12. I also have a new Dell PC and transferring my research went very smoothly. :) The new machine is using TMG 6.12 and the Wholly Genes PDF Writer v2.

Having seen the comments in the Newsletter about keeping the old "Wholly Genes PDF Writer", is there a way that I can install the old PDF writer on my new PC as well?

    Thanks

why not just download one of the many free pdf writers?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pdf has a number of sites.

Personally I downloaded cutePDF, works fine.

  13. Probably a silly question, but have you tried shutting everything down and trying again?

Sometimes this error seems to clear itself.

Alternatively, have you tried opening the project via a different route?

EG open another working project, possibly the sample one in the program files directory, then do a File-> Open instead of the "last project" default that you may have set?

Maybe smoke and mirrors, but at least worth a try.

Failing all of that, use the message manager and talk to support directly, they can probably work wonders with your file(s).

  14. ..

As regards the "use a number of preset filters on the Project Explorer", I had thought of that as an option, but as your database gets bigger (only a 1000 names now) it is very slow, compounded by that awful "countdown" box which I can't find a way to get rid of!!!

    ..

    Jim,

Possibly you could improve performance by checking out the

    File>Maintenance>Performance recommendations?

I have a rather large database (some 46,000) and filtering the PE doesn't take long at all.

Mind you I've thrown heaps of memory and resources at my pc, which helps a lot.

I rather like the countdown as it tells me whether or not my multiple line query has hit the right combinations or I'm going to have to redo it.

So if it was to go, I'd like that optional please.

  15. Whilst the people search and filter options in TMG are very powerful, they are a bit pedantic and very very slow if all you want is to look for a person by SURNAME and/or FORENAME (or parts of).

    1. Is there any way of switching off the tedious "Filter Progress" window with its "I'm wasting my life away" countdown?

    2. What is required is a simple hot key or button for a quick search that displays a box, you enter a surname (or part of) and/or forename (or part of) and the results are shown in Project Explorer or similar. E.g. "OTT TER" would find Peter Otter or Teresa Pott.

I am sure this is not available at present (please tell me if it is), can anyone advise of the quickest way to find a single person.

Are there faster ways of moving around the Project Explorer?

    Jim,

What Virginia didn't make entirely clear is that to jump to a single person, F2 to bring up the Picklist, then F2 to bring up the box to type the name without activating the letter by letter process, eg

    Doe, jane

can be input all at once in this box and jump straight to the first one of those

For finding names by parts etc, I use a number of preset filters on the Project Explorer

    eg

surname contains x and given contains y where the generic filter is set up with [?] for the x and y so you can reuse it.

That's probably not explained very well but I'm sure it will be in Help somewhere.

  16. I've checked the TMG list.

The symptoms Fran describes seem identical to mine.

    I didn't have a [MessageManager] section in my app.ini.

I've put one in as Jim suggested but as I don't restart TMG that often it could be a while before I notice whether or not anything has changed, and if it fixes it, I guess I'll never notice!

  17. When I start up TMG on my laptop after a reboot, I sometimes/mostly get the above error message when it is running query message at initialisation.

Running the message Manager from the Help menu runs fine. As does start up in the same session without a reboot.

This is WITH an internet connection, which isn't always in place when starting up a laptop.

Hitting abort or ignore seems to work.

Trying to replicate this on demand I couldn't make it happen, probably cos the manager had just run and my preferences were set to 7 days.

But error.txt shows entries for today, 2 for yesterday, 1 for 3 days ago, and also a

1925Unknown member ROTMPOBJ 9 MENUOBJTMG.MADDTAG back on the 19th (no idea what happened then).

So the 7 day thing must be a red herring.

Has never happened on the desktop, and although I try to keep the two configured as alike as possible, this isn't always the case.

Just another quirky issue, not a biggie at all, at least to me.

  18. Are there any reports that I can run that shows last edited date for people, for sources, and for citations?[/font]

Have you changed directories? Have you tried a file Explorer search for files ending in .acc?

To get a list of all people edited since date x, run a List of People report with a filtered group

Last Edited Date > (comes after) x

not sure about sources or citations, but I really doubt you've lost anything at all
