  1. I have an anomaly on my INDIVIDUAL DETAIL REPORT. When its prints a memo, for all tags that I've tested, except DEATH, the new paragraph mark is respected. However, for the DEATH tag, it is ignored and the text flows without starting new lines. Anyone any ideas why? I'm selecting all tags, memos are embedded, embed sentence[Memo] I've added my report definition: P.S. I thought I'd added my report definition, but I can't see it online, I browsed and selected my file, then pressed "add this attachment"... a few times.
  2. I'd often wondered why, when I sent a GEDCOM out of TMG to ROOTSWEB I got the SOURCE ABBREVIATION as well as the SOURCE TITLE displayed. This does make the Rootsweb source look a little cluttered and repetitive. It is of no great importance but annoyed me enough to look into it further. Having looked at Terry's TMG Tips, "Considerations for Exporting Sources", I think I understand why now. So, although the SOURCE ABBREVIATION is not actually a TMG source element, it gets put into the GEDCOM with everything else, and from my reading of the article, and using the GEDCOM export facility, I can't find a way of being selective regarding what parts of the SOURCE you can export. Is there a way to NOT export to the GEDCOM the SOURCE ABBREVIATION, or any other part of the SOURCE? There is no option NOT to have a SOURCE ABBREVIATION, TMG will not let you, and if it is too short/cryptic, it just makes things more confusing.
  3. I want to check which events have a "sort date", but no "date". I've looked through all the reports and can't find a way of listing or printing "sort dates". Surely, there must be a way! It must be held in the database somewhere. Perhaps a report that would also show "sort date" different to "date". There might be a few events being mis-sorted due to an unintended sort-date It would also be nice to see both "sort date" and "date" on the person display, that would be another way of checking, even if a bit "manual". At least a "right mouse click" or button for "Show date instead of sort date", rather than having to go all the way to Preferences.
  4. report or print sort dates

Thanks for those comments. I've had a look at http://www.whollygenes.com/files/tmgfstr.zip via an interesting article at http://solumslekt.org/forays/tmg.php And; if you Browse the TMG "G" events file in FoxPro (suggest you do a copy of the file), the column (field name) SRTDATE is easily viewable and looks just like any other column. The whole "table" can easily be exported/copied to excel etc. So, I see no reason why TMG cannot include it in reports, etc. Indeed, the response to my original query shows it can already used in a filter. Are there any other utilities like "TMG Utility" that might make use of the SRTDATE field?
  5. report or print sort dates

For anyone who's interested, the only way so far I've been able to see any sort of "sort date" to file/print is via TMG UTILITY > TAGS > Set Sort Dates (log only). However this will only display individuals where there is a potential change.
  6. report or print sort dates

Thanks for the speedy response. I sort of been through this loop already. Yes, that will give a list, but in the report definition screen > Options > Output columns I can't find "sort date" on the drop down menu, so no sort date print. I know my initial query was simply: "I want to check which events have a "sort date", but no "date". " It seems strange that there are so many columns to choose from, but not "sort date", is there no way to print the sort date?
  7. I would like to add the same source to many events, without editing each event 1 by 1. How did I get here: I've imported some people into my database, normally I use GEDCOM import which gives the option to add a source to all events being imported. I could not do this initially as the file was a UTF-8 file from PAF and the "workaround" is to import via the "welcome screen". This worked fine, but then I then remembered being told that the ideal way is to use a PAF database file direct into TMG (via the integral Genbridge I think). Correct, the results were much better than the imported GEDCOM. However, I did not see an opportunity to add a source, like when you import a GEDCOM. Am I missing something? So that's 2 related questions: 1. How to add the same source to many events, without editing each event 1 by 1. 2. Can you add a source to every event when doing a Genbridge import? Many thanks
  8. Yes, that works fine, thanks, just have to remember to do it before I merge individuals from the new dataset!! But that still leaves my other question: How to add the same source to many selected events, without editing each event 1 by 1. It would be nice to be able to filter or select items from the Master Event List and add the same source, I would have thought it quite easy to do it for all the events for an individual. Thanks again, another of those "simple" answers that I could not find in the manual.
  9. I am importing a GEDCOM (as it happens from another TMG, and I can't get the SQZ file). If I use the Simple Wizard or the Advanced Wizard default with "cite GEDCOM file for all data" everything seems to work fine. Except: I get lots of "reference" tags with dates that bear no relationship to the original GEDCOM. I suspect it is either something to do with source information that is being converted to reference tags or photo links. See below for example from GEDCOM. 1. Can anyone shed any light on these spurious "reference" tags? 2. Am I losing any "Data" if I get rid of them? 3. If they are superfluous, is there an easy way either to NOT import them, or multiple deletes from the Data set? 4. Out of interest, does the Simple Wizard just use the Advanced Wizard defaults, or is the simple Wizard more clever and converts according to the content? Many thanks for your perusal. <><> This is an extract for 1 individual followed by Individual detail report (both amended to change names etc) 1 NAME Forename /SURNAME/ 1 SEX M 1 CHAN 2 DATE 14 OCT 2007 1 OCCU Joiner 2 DATE 21 APR 1951 2 SOUR @S10@ 1 BIRT 2 DATE 29 JUN 1928 2 PLAC 134, Hall St, Townxx, Lancashire 2 SOUR @S11@ 2 SOUR @S12@ 2 SOUR @S11@ 3 PAGE Registrar 3 NOTE S G Leigh, Deputy Registrar 1 NOTE Townxx Guardian, BIRTH - SURNAM - On the 29th inst, to Mr. and Mrs. Alst 2 CONC on (nee Rigby), 134 Pall Mall, a son. 2 SOUR @S59@ 3 PAGE Townxx Guardian, July 7 1928 3 NOTE BIRTH 4 CONT SURNAM 0 On the 29th inst, to Mr. and Mrs. SURNAM (nee Rigby), 134 Pal 4 CONC l Mall, a son. 1 REFN SURNAM H, Joiner, 14 William St, Townxx 3457 2 DATE 1953 2 PLAC 14, William St, Townxx, Lancashire 2 SOUR @S72@ 1 RETI 2 DATE 1986 1 OCCU Master joiner and builder 2 DATE 20 SEP 1955 2 SOUR @S8@ 1 REFN SURNAM H, Joiner, 14 William St, Townxx 3457 2 DATE 1951 2 PLAC 14, William St, Townxx, Lancashire 2 SOUR @S72@ 1 REFN SURNAM H, Joiner, 14 William St, Townxx 3457 2 DATE 1952 2 PLAC 14, William St, Townxx, Lancashire 2 SOUR @S72@ 1 REFN SURNAM H, The Willows, Coppull Rd, Townxx 71616 2 DATE 1972 2 PLAC The Willows, Coppull Rd, Townxx, Lancashire 2 SOUR @S72@ 1 OBJE 2 FORM JPEG 2 TITL SURNAM, Harris as a little bo 2 FILE c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Genealogy\Photos\People\SURNAM, Harris as a little boy.jpg 1 OBJE 2 FORM JPEG 2 TITL Townxx, 134 Pall Mall 2 FILE c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Genealogy\Photos\Places\Townxx, 134 Pall Mall.JPG 1 OBJE 2 FORM JPEG 2 TITL SURNAM, Harris and Eileen wedd 2 FILE c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Genealogy\Photos\People\SURNAM, Harris and Eileen wedding.jpg 1 OBJE 2 FORM JPEG 2 TITL Deane, St Mary the Virgin 2 FILE c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Genealogy\Photos\Places\Deane, St Mary the Virgin.JPG 1 OBJE 2 FORM JPEG 2 TITL SURNAM, Forena & PICKERING, Ei 2 FILE C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Genealogy\Documents\SURNAM, Forena & PICKERING, Eileen marriage 1951.jpg 1 OBJE 2 FORM JPEG 2 TITL SURNAM, Forena birth 1928 2 FILE C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Genealogy\Documents\SURNAM, Forena birth 1928.jpg 1 OBJE 2 FORM JPEG 2 TITL SURNAM, Forena birth 1928 smal 2 FILE C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Genealogy\Documents\SURNAM, Forena birth 1928 small.jpg 1 FAMS @F1@ 1 FAMC @F2@ 0 @I3@ INDI __Individual Detail__ Subject* Foren SURNAM (2) Father* Walter Robert SURNAM (6) (b. 18 Jan 1902, d. 10. Many thanks for those 2 observations. None so blind as cannot see! I must admitt, it might be difficult for someone to understand my custom items, just goes to show its best to try and keep it standard. I'm still interested in my 4th question: 4. Out of interest, does the Simple Wizard just use the Advanced Wizard defaults, or is the simple Wizard more clever and convert according to the GEDCOM content?
  11. Version 7

Correct me if I am wrong, but like others I saw no mention of updates to reporting. To me, the database is not perfect, but I can do everything I need to. Where TMG falls down flat for me is reporting. Still no "all-in-one" tree (like FTM's that outputs to a single page PDF, great for emailing and browsing) When will the desendant indented narrative report include spouses with their details (FTM even gives spouse's parents). I'm afraid the only report I use from TMG is the descendant box chart (left to right), and that is for my wife's use.
  12. Reports Descendants

The problem with the Descendant Indented Chart is that there is little choice of "data" options, BMD and that's it. Oh and it doesn't wrap multiple lines correctly, try including memos. The only way I've found in TMG for flexible "data" types inc spouse is the Desendant box chart, but that can use a lot more paper than indented charts. Its a sorry state when TMG, the best Genealogy database, fails at the last hurdle, report printing, and I have to use FTM for both "all-in-one" tree and ""outline descendant" charts. I hear there is a TMG v7 is the offing. Let's hope they give us (at an upgrade price of course) some useful things like the reports we've mentioned here, and not just bells and whistles.
  13. I have a problem with multiple data sets and flags. I've read through some past forum entries and it seems there are problems with anything customised inc flags, sources etc, when using across different data sets. I would have thought you would be able to export these customisations from 1 data set or project and import to another. Is that not possible? Despite what "the experts" tell us, I can see many reasons to have separate datasets, or even projects for different groups of people. For instance if you are a professional doing it for different families, or in my case doing it for unrelated friends and none blood related family. We are recommended to use flags, which I agree are wonderful things, and TMG very good, but TMG is not the fastest software on the block, and separate datasets or projects for large amounts of distinct individuals can make it easier to manage. I've not tried it yet, but the only solution I can think of is to have a "master" project or data set, and use that as a "pro forma" for any other set of individuals. Then regularly copy it, delete individuals and import individuals. Very messy, but is it any messier than using many sets of flags and filters. Anyway, enough of my grumpy old man bit, here's the problem. I've created some flags to help me show individuals who link and hence appear in more than one descendant chart. i.e. (via report option Boxes tab, and define the Accent colours) if they have flag LINK1 they print with a background colour of say pink, LINK2 would be beige, LINK3 etc. So that when they are printed on different trees it is easy to see the link between the trees. Works a treat and makes those vital "inter family" connections stand out, double cousins, 2 brothers marry 2 sisters, widows marrying other family members etc. I find as little as 5 colours enough, reusing the links for different unconnected branches. Over time I have created other data sets and deleted some. And at present have just 2 data sets. These links seem to be repeated such that I now have LINK1#1, LINK1#2, LINK1#2 (yes 2 of LINK1#2) and the same set of 3 for all but 1 of my customised flags. (There is just 1 for SEX, LIVING etc). If I then try to run a chart report with data set 2 individuals, I get the following message for each LINK* flag ====== "The selected chart will include people from data set #2 but one or more Accent conditions are based on the LINKl#l flag which is exclusive to data set #1. The chart may therefore not reflect the intended Accent colors. Do you want to generate the chart anyway?" ======= I then proceed and produce a chart without any accents at all, even for SEX which did not get an error message for which I normally have as a blue or red box. So, in summary my main questions are: 1. Is there a way to export and import flags and other customisations between data sets or projects. It sounds like a basic requirement to me. 2. How have I got 3 copies of each flag, and why won't the report recognise them? Or is it simply that the dataset element of TMG is really only of use as a staging post for new data from the like of GEDCOMs.
  14. Thanks for the info. My fears confirmed. Although I still can't understand with a database why flags and other customisations can't be exported and imported. Back to your answers: I've done "Optimise, VFI sequence" etc but still have the multiple flags. They all show in the full "Flag Manager" list, but the extras only show for individuals from data set 2. As to how I got it I've no idea. I think I will have to try merging the 2nd data set with first, then deleting data set 2, see if that tidies it up. Before that though I suppose I could try deleting the extra "data set 2" flags via "Flag Manager".
  15. Reports Descendants

We've come accross this before. For me TMG beats all the others, but this is a major failure of TMG. They treat spouses very badly!! My only solution is to export to FTM 2006 (2008 "rewrite" version still seems very dodgy), then use "outline descendant" tree which includes spouses and their parents details. Good as a working document for research, uses much less paper than a normal tree, and easier to "stick" the pages together. I don't suggest you use FTM as your database though. Ask if you want more detail.
  16. I'm moving between PCs and want to move TMG. I've done the download, install, serial number etc and opened up my transferred database. No problem. By opening up the old transferred database this seems to have copied accross many "preferences" presumably just for that database. Is there a way (file transfer I presume) to take all my preferences accros e.g. Program option preferences, destop features etc.
  17. I'm just a bit concerned that WG will add an extra layer here, more complexity, greater maintenance costs etc. Surely the whole point of RTF format is that any serious word processor should be able to cope with it. If the TMG RTF format has been "tweaked" for MS Word, then I would agree that WG should consider a "standard" RTF format that can be read by any serious word processor. The reason I output in RTF is in the hope that if I send that report to anyone else, they will be able to read it. I am now worried that the TMG RTF format might not be that transportable. I feel another set of empirical tests coming on! I suppose it is possible with many "old" standards that they get different flavours (UNIX is just 1 example). Does anyone know of any good articles on RTF standards and who does/not abide by them (sounds like MS does not?). Does WG have an official comment on their RTF standard. Pete
