  1. Trying to make a back up of my tmg 7 project as per the instructions i found. I get error message about 3/4 through. Password protected encrypted file unable to access. Pulled all zips out. pulled xmp out. pulled NEF out. tried to guess which folder it stuck at and pulled it out. Any suggestions for how to find the offending file?
  2. I have had almost every version of tmg since 4 and still have most of the discs. My original project was in import from roots 3. My 8 year old laptops mother board have given up the ghost but the hard drive is fine. I installed and updated version 7 on the laptop and have run this as my primary version ever since. I probably still can find the discs and serial number. I did install 9 but have read the topic that it might be better to do a clean install I have never updated my project to 8 or 9 I am trying to figure out what is best. 1. Install 7 and copy my data files over ? I am not sure I can find the updates or if the installer would work? 2. Install 9 with the new installer and hope for the best and try to import? 3. I also have FTM on the machine and do have the current version but have recently discovered some issues with sync and with the import that will necessitate (per ancestry) going through my data base person by person so I want to do this right
  3. Which version and how?

I have it on version 7 and I believe the location is the default. Guess best answer is to try the installation of 9 and see if I can open the file in 7 (main not backup?) which is on my d drive now (formerly c)
  4. Which version and how?

Thanks, I wasn't sure what to do, and have been even more concerned with the impending demise of FTM which is the other program on my computer (excluding roots3, which I also run). I thought moving from 7 to 8 there were complicated discussions of what to do, but probably misremembered. Do remember you as one of the outstanding contributors and appreciate the response
  5. Last announcement May 2011 Last live chat 2010 Previously hoped release date christmas 2010 Information from wholly genes? Nothing Truthfully this is very disappointing to those of us who have remained faithful. I even updated my exhibit paths this month in the hopes of hearing about TMG 8. I will confess I did install FTM on my machine and import my data base because i was curious about what has changed. What I like: 1. Seamless integration with ancestry web site 2. Easy import of documents and census data 3. Easily imports my pictures to a chart (something I havent been able to do with VCM in quite some time because of the size of my images) 4. Frequent updates - it updated at least once since i installed it already 5. Modern looking interface 6. Place atlas ( although some of my places are not listed, and I do understand that modern atlas ignores the reality of county formation What i dont like 1. It appears (so far) I can only assign one picture 2. It seems to be confused by multiple names for the same person in my data base 3. I really hate the why it shows people unless I look in time line. I like to track folks through the census data and see what i am missing, this is much easier in TMG where i move quickly between comparable parent children view 4. Still cant figure out how to print a report with my reference data (would like to make my sisters DAR application trivial). 5. Small working window and lack of understanding (by me) of what happens when I import census data which includes other family members 6. I find it somewhat difficult to work on multiple family members at teh same time. Overall I prefer hard research in TMG, but bring stuff down from web soucres FTM clearly wins atm. The experience of waiting does point out several of the long standing issues with TMG 1. Dated VCM module 2. Chronic problem with handling census has led to many census systems. I still use the Betty Frain system. This was an issue for me when I bought TMG3 and remains one 3. Lack of integration/easy import of web based data 4. Lack of any kind of auto fill for standard modern places Wont even comment on the well known fox pro and 32/64 problems. I am having trouble understanding why Bob doesnt/wont communicate with the user base to either instill confidence or despair. I really would prefer to stick with TMG but I do use ancestry an awful lot. I understand the one click additions make it some many people who are not careful add errors rather than data, and have seen that on pedigrees that have my family, BUT I would love to be able to one click import SSDI, Census, draft registration etc. Can someone at least let us know what the future holds for TMG? This was a concern I expressed many years ago when I bought TMG. I remember offending Bob by asking how would I be sure it would be updated over the years if I made the switch I am sure there are things I missed, but I needed to vent. jrw
  6. TMG 8 when?

BTW i also still wish that external drives/usb drives worked for taking your project with you... jrw
  7. TMG 8 when?

Sure. Happy to respond. Overall I like the information supplied when i enter a census. I have used to Betty Frain system for years. I struggle each time a new census is released, or as currently , when i need to enter census data from the canadian census. My system is like hers, but i also take the jpg of the census from ancestry and link it to my entry so i dont have to search for the original again. I have always wondered why some decent system for census, templates for census arent hard wired in. I freely admit that on some issues (since i do descents of my lines) I prefer to be a little quicker than on my own ancestry. I LOVE that I can go on ancestry site with FTM and find the census, click merge and decide which folks to link and get the image and the timeline event. I FREELY admit there are problems with this (linking to the wrong person, people who dont show, dates, names that are off, spellings that are off, assumptions about relationships). Which system for census data do you use? Wouldnt you like the reference and the jpg to auto import (or have you found a way)? I do like that when i enter data in TMG I do it from the person screen and create and event for that entry. Why can't this be done in some sort of auto fashion off the ancestry site. I am REALLY not addicted to typing everything in, just to making sure it is correct. jrw
  8. TMG 8 when?

Its good news it is up. That and the TMG8 category happened after I posted. I did indeed purchase the upgrade. I STILL wish Bob would discuss some of the other points...
  9. TMG 8 when?

I saw the thread and the issues with Bob's computer. My issue is really more why doesnt he talk to us. I know the live chat appears to be a thing of the past, but he hasnt appeared in a LONG time here
  10. Although as I reread your post I would LOVE it if they made it so TMG ran on an external drive. Would also love it if the graphics progam didnt choke on the size of my 600 dpi tifs so that I would finally be able to natively print a wall chart with pictures for my family without resorting to the suggested fix of saving my real scans in a separate directory and then using an external utility to convert them all to 300 dpi jpegs (bleh). Someone should try taking a jpg of a small photo sometime and blowing it up to full page size... jrw
  11. I have been in the category of users who get a warning about a compressed file that aborts that back up and have been for 3 years. Contacted tech support once but my files were too big to email so I gave up. I just copy the whole projects directory from time to time as my back up. Would be nice to be able to use TMG backup again jrw
  12. Anyone know if new version allows back up to external USB or eSata drives or if it allows you to work off of such a drive? jrw
  13. I will certainly upgrade when the time comes as well but i really wish the announcement had given any clue about under the hood changes and what is coming. Among other things fox pro and the printing module are huge issues for me. Also the lack of ability of the printing module to deal with big Tif files is an issue. Truthfully if those things worked I could peacefully work on TMG the way it is without front end changes
  14. Meant to post the updating thing to this thread. How to update for CS5 jrw
  15. Embedding text in jpeg files

Any idea how to update this for Adobe CS5? They appear to have moved to a new system of doing embedded metatext. I can still see some of what i embedded but i would like to retitle the fields as before and show what i embedded. Dont want to go back to the old adobe John
  16. Looking for advice. Finally updated my desktop. I run TMG predominantly on my laptop yet i do like to do my email from the desktop. Accordingly i try to keep the files relatively in synch. With all the pathing issues this has become more problematic. My systems Laptop - Windows XP professional 4gb ram (yes i know it can only use 3) , 200 gig hard drive, nvidia card, asus MB. Old path used to be (TMG 6) c:\TMG\Projects\Weis with subfolders for photos, exhibits etc With the advent of TMG 7 i had to switch paths to the documents and settings\TMG\projects\... I have 20 gigs of external pictures and lots of exhibits. This took forever and frankly without Brian Wetton i might have given up ( thanks pathwiz) My new desktop Asus T?7p55D-e pro, 8 gigs DDR3 ram, evga geforce 285 with 1 gig, 3 drives (boot Intel SSD 80 gigs, secondary WD velociraptor 200 gigs or so, and back up internal green WD 1 tb. My intention is to install all the slow loading programs such as windows, photoshop cs5, office and TMG on the SSD drive (this is basically instant on, like 5 sec CS 4 load) but as it is only 80 gigs, i would prefer to store my data off it and on the velociraptor with backup to the 1 tb. I would like to continue to work from my laptop and back up to the desktop by copying this to an external eSata drive (faster copy than USB which is like slow torture). I would love to recopy it back and have it work, and I would truly truly hate to change the path every time. I seriously debated going to the genealogic society meeting in SLC tomorrow just to find Bobs talk and ask him, but i decided that was an unfair ambush. What suggestions so you have? Best i can think if is change the path on BOTH machines to make TMG in the root with its data so the path doesnt change with each iteration of windows, although it feels a lot like back to the future as that was my old path... John
  17. Path advice

Been considering this. I would need to reformat my laptop and partion the drive. I did indeed put stuff on my D drive in my desktop john weis
  18. Path advice

I actually live in Utah so the idea of dragging Bob up the hill also occured to me... jrw
  19. I almost hate to post this but have been using the Frain system for US census for a while. I occassional forget how and folks help me find it. That isnt the problem today. The time has come that I need to set up census for Canadian census stuff. I rarely touch canadian research but a family line or two has tracked there and i cant avoid it any longer. Has anyone set up templates for Canadian census using bettys system or should i chicken out and use some vanilla system John Weis
  20. Searched under end of line, no children. i know i saw this posted before. How do you deignate in your project that someone has no issue so you dont return later ( or someone reviewing your project) and try to find issue? jrw
  21. Anyone still have the instructions with the graphics. I lost my copy of it, and it has been a while since i did much census work and would like to get it right. jrw
  22. Thanks a million. Had it set up long ago but couldnt remember how to use it again jrw
  23. Having been using XP pro for some time. When TMG 7 came out had to redo the paths to all my exhibits (thanks path wiz). Debating moving to windows 7. Will i need to redo all my paths again or will the same path be valid? Will path wiz handle it if it isnt valid? jrw
  24. How, if TMG requires entries to the registry (and it does), can it even be considered? Not being a programmer and knowing even less what is requires to enter in the registry I have no idea. Still the idea of being able to take it with my in a coat pocket on a trip seems desireable. I dont really know how ram is made either but more always seems like a good idea. My point was not that i know how to do it, but that it would be nice to do if possble. There are certainly things that run from eternal hard drives using only stuff installed in the computer. For example if i put a PDF on an external hard drive and click it, most computers it runs. I understand that TMG is a much more complicated programk but the idea remains good jrw
  25. I think i asked this same question a year or two ago. I understand what the replies are saying about the install but it still seems like a good idea to me and am curious if they have considered it jrw
