  1. Hi, When a place is used in a tag, the sentence in a report is terminated by ".", giving something like "He lived in Brussels." However, sometimes I want to include a memo between brackets, such as : "He lived in Brussels (with his children)." But as soon as I put something in the memofield, I get: "He lived in Brussels; (with his children).", which doesn't look nice. Is there a way to avoid the ";" before the memo text? Another problem I have concerns the use of a place preposition (in, at, nothing). I can change it in the report options and it works fine, except for one custom-made tag "residentie" (Dutch for residence). Only in that single tag I never get "in" or "at", while all other tags in the report are fine. What could possibly be the reason for this? Dirk
  2. Place terminated by ";"

John, Making the place conditional indeed changed the first problem (again something new I learned) Regarding the second problem, I only added <[M]> at the end of the sentence and forgot to look at the first part. So this is solved as well. Thanks a lot. The only remaining thing is that the semi-colon seems to disappear only in the narrative report, but not in the individual detail. Also in the detail window, the memo is still separated by a comma. Is there a solution for this as well? Dirk
  3. Place terminated by ";"

John, The sentence I currently have (translated to English) is: [P] <lived|en [PO] lived> <[D]> [L] || [P] <lives|en [PO] live> <[D]> [L] so, I don't see any problems with spaces. Furthermore, when I add <[M]> at the end of the sentence, the semi-colon does not disappear. Any further suggestions? Dirk
  4. Hi, Probably a question with an obvious answer, but I don't see how to do it. How can you choose a primary name and yet have another name appearing in the picklist: e.g. I have a person with first names "Joanne Maria Aleydis", who was known as "Alice". I want to have the full name as the primary one, but want to see only "Alice" appear in the picklist. I defined a nick-name "Alice" and chose the filter "synonyms", but nevertheless both names keep appearing. How can I get what I want? Best regards, Dirk
  5. Hi, When generating non-narrative reports (individual detail, family,..) only the primary photographs can be printed. One of the “problems” I am always struggling with is which photograph to choose as the primary one. Do I take the one at age 20 or at age 50 or maybe 70? It would be nice to be able to print more than 1 picture if several ones are available. Is there any reason why this is not possible. The only reason I can think of is that there might be a problem when having 4 pictures (below one another) and only 2 lines of text. Why not putting or having the possibility of putting several pictures next to each other just below a person’s name. This would take only a limited space and at the same time extend the area for the printed text. Currently, part of the page width is lost because of a photograph being printed. Am I the only person thinking like this or do other people share this feeling? Dirk
  6. Hi, Is it possible in a Family Group sheet to print shared tags in both the section of the husband and the wife. E.g. when a couple is married I have both man and wife as persons in a residence sheet. When I print a Family Group sheet, the residence is only listed in the man's section. Suppose his widow moves after his death, then 1 residence item is printed for her , which gives the impression that she only lived there, as only one place is listed. Is there a solution to print shared tags in both sections? Dirk
  7. I'm not sure if this is what you are looking for, but under "reports", there is an option to list a document of related persons (parents, siblings, uncles,...). I have a dutch version, so I don't know what the exact English name is, but it is situated between "journal" and "list of.." under "reports". It gives you a list of all related persons and how they are related. Dirk
  8. PDA Devices

I agree with Norb that you'll find two different opinions on this and each will swear by their OS and that either one will fill your needs perfectly. I have a Palm LifeDrive with GedStar PRO and I am entirely happy with it. I always carry it with me for looking up the persons and data in my genealogy data base (including pictures, tasks, references,...). As fa as the TX is concerned, I think it is comparable with the LifeDrive for genealogical purposes. You will never need the 4 GB for this. A 1 GB (or even smaller) SD cart will do the job. The LifeDrive, on the other hand, looks and feels somewhat more solid, but has the advantage of being slower when accessing (not processing) data as the hard Drive has to be accessed each time. For me this is no problem, but many people report getting crazy by this lag. It must however be said there are rumours that also Palm will finally abandon the Palm OS in favour of windows CE. Of course, this might happen in the far future and as you know "In the end we're all dead". I stick to my Palm for the time being. Dirk
  9. Hi, My default layout consists of a "details view" at the top (1/2 screen width), a "children view" at the bottom left (1/4 screen width) en a "siblings view" at the bottom right (1/4 screen width). As the names in my data base are often quite long (with up to 4 given names) they are not entirely visible in the bottom views. When I want to change the focus to a person with a name that doesn't fit in the view, double clicking on that person's name doesn't work. I always have to right click and bring focus to the new person. Double clicking on a person's name works fine if the entire name is visible. The same thing happens in the details view (1/2 screen) when the information contains a name (e.g. partner of focus person in marriage tag) and the information is longer than one line. Double clicking doesn't chane the focus to the person listed in the 2-lines information. When the information is only 1 line long, double clicking works fine. Do other people experience the same thing and can it be avoided, such that a double click works in all cases? Dirk Correction: details view has screen width, others have 1/2 screen width
  10. You are absolutely right. yet another "problem" solved. I was not aware of the interference and it really has been annoying me from the beginning. I always suspect these thing as being little TMG bugs, but it seems TMG is really good. Thanks a lot. Dirk
  11. Saving data

Hi, I've always wondered why TMG has no "Save" function, which is available in all (non-genealogy) programs I know. When you input data for, let's say 2 hours, how do you save the data that has been input after 15 min work? Close the program and start up again? That's a bit unconventional. Also. each modification you do (e.g. combining two people), seems to be permanent. If you were accidentally wrong, the modifications are permanent anyway. All programs I know allow you to save your data prior to a modification/input that expect to possibly have a bad outcome. If things go wrong, there is always a way back. It happened to my a few times that I spent quite some time inputing data, closed TMG with a back-up, but the back-up was hanging, requiring a restart of my PC, which made me lose all my latest work. Is there a work-around for this? Dirk
  12. Saving data

    That's nice. Thanks. Dirk
  13. Saving data

    1) I wasn't aware of the fact that the lack of a manual save is due to the data base application. I thought it was a TMG issue. 2) I do make frequent back-ups (e.g. on an external hard drive and on a laptop), but it is terrible if you have been entering data for 2 hours and you lose these data (even if you have all the previous data rescued). 3) How do I do a data-only back-up from a button on the toolbar? This is what I need, as it happened to me before that I closed TMG with a back-up, which resulted in a failure. It urged me to close the program with CTRL ALT DEL / end program and I lost all the data I entered before. Dirk
  14. The reason why I am a bit sceptical to combine a number of occurances is illustrated by the following case: I have an aunt who lived at a certain address, say Addr1 when her first and second child were born, when her children were married, when her husband declared the death of his father, when her grandchildren were born, when her husband died and now she still lives there. However, in the meantime, she lived at an other address, say Add2, for just a couple of years. However, I don't know of any events (marriages, births,..) which refer to Addr2. So if anyone would compile these data by the year 2100, I guess they will report she was living at addr1 from her marriage to her death, without mentioning the few years at Addr2. What do you think? Dirk
  15. The use of a list of residence tags for a person is something I am not happy with either, but which I nevertheless keep using, because I don't know of any alternative in following case: addresses that one gets from birth, death, marriage certificates. How can you include this information without having a series of residence tags with dates several years apart. Is there any solution for this? Dirk
  16. Hi, Is there a possibility to exclude part of a memo from printing in a report. I tried "-", but this seems to work only for the entire memo. The {} on the other hand exludes the text from the person view as well. How do I get the whole memo contents in the person view and only part of it in a printed report? A second question concerns the concequence of a program upgrade on languages. What exactly can get lost after an upgrade. Does an upgrade affect tags or sentences or anything else? I use a dutch version of TMG and upgraded 2 times already (overwriting the language), but nothing seems to be lost. This is certainly due to the fact that I didn't make a lot of changes yet (being a relatively new user), but I'm not sure I understand what I should pay attention to when upgrading in the future. Dirk
  17. Exclude part of memo

Les, Now it works. The crucial sentence in your message was: "You will need to have <[M1].> <[M2.> in the sentence definition." I thought <[M1]> a.s.o. was only relevant for sentences in narrative reports. Obviously, they are also required for non-narrative reports. Many thanks! Dirk
  18. Exclude part of memo

This is selected. I do see the contents of my memo if the memo contains only one part. If it contains two parts separated by "||" I see only the first part . The part after "||" is not printed. If I want to print a non-narrative report and I have a memo with several parts separated by "||", do I have to use [M1], [M2] as well or is this only for narrative reports. How does it work then for non-narrative reports? Dirk
  19. Exclude part of memo

I know you can use <[M1]> <[M2]> (though I never did yet) but doesn't this only apply to sentences in narrative reports? My problem is to exclude certain memo information (from reports only) when printing an individual detail or family report, which is just a list of tags with the corresponding information? Dirk
  20. Exclude part of memo

I thought I had the solution by splitting up the memo field, separating the parts by "||" and putting "-" at the beginning of the second part. However, what I notice is that the second part of my memo (behind the "||") is never printed in my individual detail report. Why is this? What I actually want to have is a memo for (e.g.) a Death tag with in my memo 1) the hour of death (to be viewed in the person view and to be printed in the report) and the cause of death (to be viewed in the person view but not to be printed in the person detail report). How can this be acomplished? Dirk
  21. Exclude part of memo

The suggestion to try [HID:].....[:HID] doesn't help, I'm afraid. According to the help instructions text controlled by this code will never print on any report output, whether to screen, file, or printer. As far as the language issue is concerned, I now understand what I have to do, as there is no need to be concerned about Tags and sentences (I never made any edits to the translation tables). But I will certainly read Terry's articles. I already read some of them before and they are really excellent (i.e. very easy to read, but nevertheless very informative). Dirk
  22. Hi, I have a question concerning the reference to sources in reports. Suppose I want to create an overview (PDF format) of the data for one person using a person detail report. When generating the report, I get references to sources for the different tags, but there are 2 problems: 1) There is no list of sources at the end of the document 2) The references to the sources in the document are always numbered starting from 1, 2, 3 a.s.o., but these numbers do not correspond to the actual source numbers. (i.e. the first appearance of a reference to a source always has No 1 even if that particular source has number 55 in the list of sources) Can anyone explain how to manage this? Dirk
  23. Now I see how it works. Thanks Dirk
  24. Hello, When making reports (e.g. individual detail) it is possible to remove the reference numbers as well as the ID numbers behind a person's name. For names in the windows (details, children, siblings,... windows) I don't see this option. As far as I know I can only choose to see ID, reference or both. Isn't it anyhow possible to show only people's names without ID or reference? Dirk
