  1. I am doing a name name Study, so I am only really interested in a family while it has the name Muddock. I have found some people who have married a female Muddock, she has then carried on having children under her new married name and I am in contact with one of her living relatives. I add all of these people to my database for completeness, however I am not really that concerned about them as they have lost the name Muddock by now.

I currently have all of these 'other' familes in the same Dataset as my Muddock's. I want to move these other families out, so that I can hide them temporarily while working on data, etc. but then show them when I do a SS output.

What is the best way to do it?

I can think of having them saved as a seperate TMG database and then inport. Or are there other better ways?

  2. Yes, I know this should be very basic, but for the life of me I can not work out how to do it.

I have just put some details in for a census for a Rachel Joyce and when I had finished I noticed I already had an R. Joyce as a witness for another event that it turns out is the same person. So I wanted to get rif of the original record.

I added the new one in as a witness to the event in question (and removed the old one). The old name I know wish to remove as it is not connected to any other record and is indeed a duplicate name.

But the delete button for the person is disabled. Why is this, it has 0 tags associated with it.

Surely deleting a person is possible?

    I know. I am missing something aren't I.

    Simon

ok - I can be a bit slow sometimes. I was expecting to see it in the right click menu, but the delete option is under the edit menu. Kind of obvious now...

    As homer once said.

    DOH!

    Go

    Edit \ Delete Person

  3. Hi,

When generating non-narrative reports (individual detail, family,..) only the primary photographs can be printed. One of the “problems” I am always struggling with is which photograph to choose as the primary one. Do I take the one at age 20 or at age 50 or maybe 70? It would be nice to be able to print more than 1 picture if several ones are available. Is there any reason why this is not possible. The only reason I can think of is that there might be a problem when having 4 pictures (below one another) and only 2 lines of text. Why not putting or having the possibility of putting several pictures next to each other just below a person’s name. This would take only a limited space and at the same time extend the area for the printed text. Currently, part of the page width is lost because of a photograph being printed. Am I the only person thinking like this or do other people share this feeling?

    Dirk

Yes I also wonder why the space under the photo is not used. I would of thought that the text could continue under the photo so that the ID report may take up less pages.

  4. Don't bother deleting them.

When you select your language in the FILE>LANGUAGE screen, it will automatically make that the default language when creating new sentences.

Then you will need to select that language for your reports. Once this is done, they will use that language from then on.

Then in each tag type, you can select a place style to be used with that tag type. Once these are set, whenever you open a new tag, that place style will be selected. You can set it GLOBALLY under FILE>DATASET MANAGER. If one is set for the tag type, it will over rule what is set at the DATASET MANAGER level.

Hi, Just to clarify my query.

My new entries are created fine using the correct language and place style.

For some of my older existing events, they are set to be "US Place style", as that must of been the dafult when I eneterd that information some time ago. I now want to change that style to my new default for every occurance. I could obviously do this manually to every instance where I find it as and when I find it, but this could be on hundreds of events, etc., which is why i would like to change the place style globally if possible.

Therefore my question is, is it possible to change the place style globally?

    Thanks

  5. I have just bought TMG 6.09 UK edition, using WinXP home.

In TMG if I select 'file', 'preferences' then it comes up with a screen asking beginner or advanced mode, which ever one I click the program just hangs.

I installed tmg on the admininstrator account, but need to use it on a limited account.

Does anybody else use tmg on a limited user account?

any ideas how I can get this to work

    Chris

Try posting in the v6 forum if you have not solved it yet, I have it on all users so no probs.

  6. I have created a custom language called English2 which is my default language. I have deleted all other languages such as Norweigian, etc and only have 2 languagues in TMG called English (template) and English 2.

However when i click on 'Tag Type List' and select some of my tags, some other languaes appear, such as Norweigian, etc.

Is there any way of deleting these others somehow and refering to the default language? I suspect that at some time they have been accidently selected (or may be in use in error).

Also I would like to change to "place style" globally from the default style to a "custom style" which has already been created, is this possible?

  7. If you open windows exploer, then you can then drag the e-mail from your e-mail box into explorer. It is then saved as a file in explorer, which you can moved about. You could then even attach the e-mail as an exhibit. You can also save the e-mails onto a CD if required.

  8. The "bio" tags do not print in TMG Journals as such, but are used to create the lists of children.

Since the children are listed in the Journal, and the bio tags print directly in the IDR, why do you want to add the parents as witnesses to the birth tags?

    Hi

Having reviewed what John noted, I have not put the parents as witnesses and left it as bio tags. I was trying to include the birth info within the body of the paragraph rather than at the end. I now think that I was trying to complicate things too much and am going to stick with it as the standard jounal report. This means removing the witnessses from the birth info (luckily not too many).

I think I was trying too much, I am almost at a stage where i am happy with all of my reports now.... thankfully..

    Thanks again.

  9. I am keen on the "Individual Detail Report (IDR)" and "Journal Report (which forms the basis of my SS output)". Here is my scenario...

The bio tags print of the IDR without having the person as a witness to the birth, however they do not print on the journal if they are not as a witness.

The birth tags print on the journal (and SS) but only if the person is as a witness to the birth (and I then set the role as father/mother). This then means that on the IDR the birth appears as Son-Bio and also as the witness to the birth, ie twice for each person which is not ideal. It then appears OK on SS and the journal.

Is this the best way to do it & put up with it twice on the IDR? Or is there a better way.........

    Thanks

  10. You could save the web page at that point in time by going "File, Save As", then upload that file if you are uploading that page onto your site with a link. You might want to save that file anyway on your hard drive rather than a paper copy.

Of course if the info changes over time you will be refering to old data (could be an incorrect assumption by someone).

How often have people redesigned their websites, which means changing file names, etc!

    Hope it helps.

    Shaun

  11. Shaun,

I think you are a Second Site (SS) user, so maybe this suggestion will work for you. The grid-type Formats included with Second Site are a lot like an Ind. Detail report in TMG. Tags are shown in chronological sequence by the tag's Sort Date. SS has a "Detail Format" setting that has "Raw Data" and "Use Sentence" options. If you don't want a narrative, then choose "Raw Data". With "Raw Data", the SS format does include the witnesses.

I'm having a redesign of the way I enter my data at the moment and the SS grid format is how I like it presented (only just found this format!), thanks for the advice and I'll experiment with these options.

  12. I think I will attach the Cert to the event, so that any witness can also include a link to the Cert.

With my sources, I use fairly general ones, such as 'Birth Cert' (to avoid having 1000's of sources), and then add the persons name under the Citation detail. Therefore if I attach to the Citation Detail I would need to attach to the main person & every witness which would take longer.

  13. I am in the process of scanning my Birth Certificates, which I will add to my birth event in TMG and then SS. My problem is that at the scanned size they take up 800 kb each.

When I resize and compress them in Microsoft Picture Editor they become smaller in size but are unreadable (the text), in that you can't make out the data if you need to read it again or for someone else to download.

I like having all of the attachments set to be the same size (width) as I think it looks better in SS, but don't want to lose quality.

    What are my options....

  14. I would definitely recomend Terry's site, I found it invaluable when i was a beginner (not much changed there) to genealogy and how to use TMG. I have also used his accents and sentences.

    Ben

I've been on Terry's site all day using and learning about sentence structures. Its great now I understand it a bit more. His site is very useful, now under my favourites!

  15. I have a tag called occupation and I enter the ocupation under the memo field. I also have marriage tags where I enter additional data under the memo field. I have the font setting for memo set to Italics for the journal report.

I like having the marriage memo in italics as it shows additional information at the end of my marriage sentance. However as the memo field for the occupation is in the middle of the sentance i do not want it as italic.

    Any way to do this?

    My occupation tag is [P] <was employed as a|and [PO] were> [M] <[D]> <[L]>

    Thanks

  16. No, you cannot control the sentence structure with a flag (except the Living flag - but that won't help here).

I'd suggest you use Roles. For example, create a Role of NotFound with a sentence structure of an exclusion mark. For those you want to not print, give them the Role of NotFound, and nothing will print in narrative reports.

You can also set the Role to show in the Person View (on the Other tab of the Tag Type Definition) as a visual reminder in the Person View as well.

If you haven't used Roles, there is a tutorial on my website - link below.

Thanks, looks like I'll be using your site a lot more, I'll need to re-enter all of my data (about 2000 names) to get in the correct format.

  17. I have a sentence structure that I would like not to print/occur if a flag value is set to N. Is this possible?

The reason is that I have the tag 1841 UK census added to every person. The sentance structure if fine when I have found them in the census. However when I have not yet found them in the census, as the tag is still there it comes up with the basic data (He was recorded on the 1841 UK census). I therfore do not want this visible, as I have not found him.

    My settings are: [P] <was recorded on the|and [PO] were> 1841 UK Census <[M]> <[D]> <[L]>

I do not want to remove the tag as it reminds me i need to find him.

    Any suggestions

    Thanks
