Thanks again, Terry, I sort of figured that one out and I must admit, like you, I prefer the journal report as a detailed report but this particular family has given me another problem I can't seem to work out. I have details of two children, Jack & Jill, born to Bill and Beryl. I have the details of Jack marrying Mary and having 4 kids, with dates, etc. I have the fact (year only) of Jill marrying Fred and the comment "they had 6 children and at least 10 grandchildren". Jack & Mary's records and children all appear as they should (in a Journal report) but not those for Jill & Fred. I have added that sentence ("they had 6 children and at least 10 grandchildren") as a memo to a tag to get into a report. It came out in a Descendant Indented Narrative report when added to a "Num Child" tag but it wont seem to appear on a Journal Report. I've checked and double checked the options and everything appears to be as it should but, for the life of me, I can't get that sentence to appear in a Journal report. Jill doesn't even appear in the 5th generation of the report where her brother, Jack, wife and family are listed. I expected Jill to appear with her husband and the previous mentioned comment. They are both listed in the 4th generation section as children of Bill & Beryl. All suggestions welcome!

Thanks, Terry, I don't remember changing it, not globally anyway. Or does it became global if I change a tag sentence for one person, eg. if there are several children born to a woman, all with different fathers, I would (perhaps) want the report to indicated the individual paternities?

I'd never used the message area of this site until last week when a relation found a forum post of mine and sent a message to me to contact them. I duly replied to them but the message didn't show up in the "sent" folder so I sent it twice more and then gave up, assuming that it went into cyberspace and they didn't get it. I have since received an email from them (I gave them the address in my reply) saying they received the three replies I sent. There is still no indication on the message board of any reply I made, the only thing in there is the original message I received. Is this a known bug or aren't I using it properly?

When putting out a Journal report there appears, at least to me, a fair bit of unnecessary repetition when there are several generations represented. For example, Generation One will have all the BMDB details of the husband and wife then a list of their children with each of their BMDB details. Generation Two then goes on and repeats all the BMDB details from the previous section and adds the children (with their BMDB details) for that family. Children of Jane Elizabeth Talbot and Stephen Richard Couzner were as follows: 25. i. HENRY ALFRED was born on 17 Aug 1880 in Appila Yarrowie, South Australia, son of Stephen Richard Couzner and Jane Elizabeth Talbot. On 31 Mar 1909, age 28, he married Charlotte Elizabeth Gale, age 20, daughter of Mark Gale, in St James CE Church, Yacka, South Australia. Henry died on Thu. 6 May 1954, in Jamestown, South Australia, aged 73 years, 8 months and 19 days. Henry was buried in in the Jamestown Cemetery, Jamestown, South Australia. I would like to put out a report that just lists the children and their birth details under the parents and add their other life experiences under their generation's heading. eg: Children of Jane Elizabeth Talbot and Stephen Richard Couzner were as follows: i. HENRY ALFRED was born on 17 Aug 1880 in Appila Yarrowie, South Australia ii. STEPHEN GEORGE was born on 5 Mar 1881 in Appilla, South Australia etc. etc and so forth... and then have their life details in their generation section. There's a lot of duplicated space when outputting to a printable format and, depending how much detail is included, what would be a 100 page report could probably be pared back to 60-80 pages. Short of putting it in a Word document and editing it manually, is there any way to achieve what I want?

Thanks Terry, I had misunderstood what some of the "options" did. Another query; I can't seem to generate an index when outputting a Journal Report to MS Word. I've ticked "custom format" under the "General" tab and tried various combinations of settings in the "Index" tab but nothing seems to be generated. Any suggestions?

I'm in the process of installing TMG v7 on a new laptop, with Vista Home Premium. I have upgraded the desktop machine (which has XP installed) to 7.03 and backed-up to a stick so I could do a restore. I ran into a couple of problems that I've found the answers to in this forum, thanks; will see if I can sort that out tomorrow. My main concern, at the moment, is the different way the two OSs (XP & Vista) arrange their files. One of the reasons I got the laptop was so I could take my TMG with me when we went travelling and visiting, so data could be entered there and then, while it was fresh, and also to make sure I wasn't doubling up on research. My plan was to then download it to the desktop machine, on our return home, as the main repository. Is that a viable option, given that the file paths are different? Or am I going to have to make a decision to use one or the other, or to manually re-enter everything into the second machine?

Thanks, Jim, that was fairly painless. All I have to do now is upgrade the laptop to TMG v7.03, when I get my wireless connection set up.

Is there any sentence structure I could use so only the first name of a witness is printed in reports? In particular I'm looking at witnesses in census records. Currently I'm using [W] appeared on the census <[D],> in the household of [P1] <and [P2]><[L]> <[WM]> This outputs as Frederick Ezekiel Edmonds appeared on the census on 06 Jun 1841, in the household of Ezekiel Edmonds in Church Yard, Bradford-on-Avon, Wiltshire, England son, age 7. I feel this is too formal for most of my purposes, especially when there is more than one census in an individual report, and, as his/her full name is at the start of the report, would prefer it to read Frederick appeared on the census on 06 Jun 1841... etc. I can't see anything in the sentence structure section of Help that would achieve my desired result. I know I can use an individual Census Tag entry for each person but that defeats the purpose of using the Witness feature (and adds to the workload!)

Thanks, Terry, I should have thought of that myself! I've done that with most of the Tags (after Birth) for most principals, with a bit of tweaking here and there; as you say, it makes the output more readable.

I have had a request for a family tree from someone in my database but not all in there are this persons relatives. What would be the easiest way to extract ancestors, descendants and all other people (and spouses) related to this one person? I've tried various "list of people" combinations without success. No doubt I'm overlooking some simple formula. I want to extract these people into a separate project database so I can put together a CD using Second Site, to send to them. Thanks.

When trying to include generation numbers in reports I get <FHELVSS75> before every generation number. This seems to happen with all report formats. Another problem, that only seems to occur in Descendant Indented Charts, is <FA line TMG> appearing before every line of a report other that the heading. As they appear to be something to do with HTML (of which I know nothing) what do I do to correct the errors? I've been away for 3 weeks and the program was working OK before but others used my computer while I was away. Could something have been imported to cause the problems? Cheers, Daryl

Thanks, Virginia, that fixed it. It would be nice if the program checked automatically for updates and let us know when they're available. Perhaps an idea to look at in a future update?

I have just deleted a number of people from my database after finding they weren't genetically or maritally (is that a word? ) connected, which is my criteria for entry. Because I had to delete the tags first, some of the marriage partners "escaped" before I realised I should write their surnames down first. Is there a way to search for "orphans" (i.e. names not connected to anyone) in my database of several thousand names? Daryl

Thanks, Michael, I knew there had to be an easy answer, as with most things to do with TMG! To your suggested filters I also added "# of witnessed events" which covers attendants at marriages, etc., that I have named. In response to your follow-up post, the ones I'm trying to find to delete are, in the main, stand-alone individuals with no other information or sources connected to them; I can't even remember how, or why, they came to be in there in the first place! I should have said "genetically or maritally connected, which is my" main "criteria for entry". I have a lot of (currently) unrelated names that I feel may become connected at some time, because of locality or unusual spelling, etc., and have them flagged as "Related by=?" with a different accent colour to the "Related by=U", which I use for in-laws (parents, brothers, sisters, etc). Currently, that arrangement suits my purpose.

Is it possible to change the flag setting for several dozen people at once? I have been accumulating names that I considered were probably related, because of the small villages they came from and the fact that most of them were related to each other. I have now found the missing link and have linked them to my tree but the "Related" flag for them was left as (?) and I now wish to change the flags to properly indicate the relationships. Is there an easy way of doing this or do I have to do each one individually? I had a look through John Cardinal's TMG Utility but couldn't see anything that would help. thanks, Daryl.

I have a female, lets call her Ruth. On her birth records she is listed as; Ruth Drury, mother Elsie Drury, father unrecorded. There is a cross reference to a Ruth Parker, mother Elsie Drury, father unrecorded. Eighteen months later Elsie married Henry Dansie and from then on Ruth is known as Ruth Dansie. My quandry is, what surname do I enter her under. Currently I have her as Ruth Drury with a Name-var Ruth Parker as they were the names I got from the birth record. But, apparently, it's one of those "skeletons" that some families don't like to talk about and I'm told , in no uncertain terms, that "she was a Dansie". How can I placate her rellies and still keep the records as an honest portrayal of events? Daryl.

Is it possible to construct sentences that can be used in the same way as a witness tag? What I’d like to achieve is to be able to, for example, when a parent (or sibling or spouse) dies (or divorces or whatever), I could list, as in a witness tag, those I wanted to be included and when a narrative report was run it would output, automatically, the ages and date of the various surviving family members at the time of the event, without having to add tags to individuals. Hope that doesn’t sound too convoluted. Here’s an example of the output I’d like to see, three different scenarios in bold: “Charles Thomas Braydon was born near Angaston, South Australia, on 20 Jul 1869, son of Thomas Braydon and Amelia Jasper. When his father died on 19 Sep 1901 in Wilmington, South Australia, he was 32 years old. On 7 Jul 1902 he married Matilda Florence Anderson, daughter of John Christian Anderson and Jane Bakewell, in Residence of W. Bache, Gladstone, South Australia. When his mother died on 20 Dec 1916 he was aged 47, living in Melrose, South Australia. Charles was 66 when his sister, Edna, died at the Orroroo Hospital, aged 76. He died on 2 Jul 1946 in Wilmington, South Australia, aged 76. He was buried in Wilmington Cemetery.” ------------- ….and I would like the same report to apply to all surving family members that I enter as “witnesses” without having to edit their entries. I realise I probably couldn’t expect to have different sentences in the same report although, if I have a different sentence for each principal, it might work. I’m still trying to come to grips with the sentence and roles construction. I’m reasonably confident on simple sentence construction and editing but having trouble with roles. I know how to add new roles but can’t work out where I can put in the role definitions, such as DeAnna’s Widowed, SurvivorAge, WasWith, WasNotWith, etc. (from the Sentence Structures forum). Where do they go? The Help files tells me about adding roles but nothing about definitions, that I could find. Help! Cheers, Daryl.

I also use accents throughout my project and would like to be able to have a wider range. I’m sure it’s in there somewhere, nearly everything is, but there seems to be only one “conflict” colour. To explain: I have set accents for the flags to A, C, D, M, U, ?. That covers everyone in the project and makes it easy to see where people fit in the tree. Because there have been a lot of twins born, in each generation, I have used 2 for Multiple Births, so I’ve ticked the “Accent names by ALL matching conditions” box and have a “Conflict Colour”. I would also like to be able to accent, for example, “All people born in England” but if I do that, currently, they appear in the same colour as the twins. I’d like to see a larger array of combinations available. Is that possible, currently, or am I expecting too much?

Is it possible, and if so how, to force a new line in an “Individual Narrative Report”? I have created a tag I called “Short Biography” and it picks up a short bio of ten to thirty lines of a person that I put in the Memo box in the Tag Entry screen. However, when I run a report the sentences all run together with the other tags. If I don’t put a date in the tag, it is the first thing to be printed but the following tags continue in the narrative without starting a new line. Preferably, I would like the bio to follow the narrative for all the other tags, but not have to put a date on it to do this, as the date would be wrong for the start of the bio which, in many cases would be about starting school after they were dead!! I know in many cases I could add each section of a bio as a separate dated tag but a lot of it is general life stories. While I don’t know exactly when they did something, I do know their life stories. How do you put in something like, “She was a tourist guide for many years and travelled all over this great country” or “He was a farmer who had a love of music. He formed a band and, for 45 years, played at local dances all through the district”? I’m open to suggestions.

By utilising the sort dates I can now have the undated births follow a marriage; much more respectable.
