The Descendant Indented Chart has an option under Miscellaneous - "Repeat Duplicate Lines". You want that one unchecked.

I don't know why the Descendant Indented Narrative and the Journal Report do not have the same option.

Yes, I use that one but my main concern is with the Descendant Box Chart (and Narrative). Where this happens in an early generation, particularly in the Box Chart, you get a double-up of the output from there on and, where large families are included, it can result in pages of unnecessary boxes, which can be a pain in the proverbial to delete manually and then having to neatly rearrange the remaining boxes to something that is reasonably presentable.

  2. I have a few people who married their relatives, usually 1st, 2nd or 3rd cousins. The trouble is, when I do a report I get a doubling up of their descendants, as each one is listed with their siblings and their spouse and descenants. Is there a way to automatically combine the two or do I have to delete one of them manually from the chart? It happens in all descendant reports that I've tried where those particular families are included.

  3. Jim has explained how to adjust the wife's Name-Marr tag.

Regarding the larger topic of how to handle primary names in TMG, I don't think you should always assign the name at birth as the primary name.

For males, I set the primary name to the one they used or were described by most often. For your Georgios, I think that would be George North. I then add another name tag to record the name given to him at birth. You might come to a different conclusion, but I encourage you to consider how the name appears in reports and charts, etc., when choosing the primary name. In some output, it's difficult to use a non-primary name, and in others it may be impossible.

For females, I do basically the same thing, with one exception. I do not change the primary name to a married name even if that is how she was known through most of her life. I think standard genealogical practice (at least in the USA) is to describe a woman by her maiden name, and that works best in the aforementioned reports and charts. Still, if a woman was "Mary Clarabelle Smith" at birth, but was always known as "Bella", I'd set her primary name to "Bella Smith", record her formal birth name in another name tag, and add Name-Marr tags as appropriate.

    That's my $.02.

    Thanks Jim & John,

I decided to leave his primary name as North and put in a Name-Chg tag to reflect his change of name. I then changed the sentence structure, replacing "to" with "from" to show that was his prior name.

In relation to married females, I always keep their maiden names as primary but always have a name change added at marriage. I find this simplifies things when searching, for deaths in particular, as their deaths are usually recorded using their married name.

  4. I know there has to be a way around this but I can't see it. I'll use real names as it was 160 years ago.

Georgios Tramoundanas arrived in 1840. Because he wanted to Anglicize his name, he officially changed it to George North. I entered into TMG Georgios Tramoundanas and then added a Name-Chg tag for George North. He married in 1858, after the name change, as George North but when I try to add the marriage his wife's name is changed to Tramoundanas. How do I get his wife to be Mrs. North instead of Mrs T.? Do I need to enter him as George North and put a note or memo or a Name-Var or Name-Chg tag to the effect that he had changed his name?

  5. Nope no luck with that any other suggestions?

    Sue

I thought I was having the same problem but found that the reports never appeared "on top", they always hide behind the top page and I need to click on the "Report" icon in the taskbar. It doesn't happen every time, but fairly often. Perhaps it has something to do with the number of open programmes and open windows within those programmes?

  6. Look at the Person View for that individual and you will see a name-var or some type of name tag listed in the tag list that has the same name as the primary name tag which is shown at the top of the Person View...

You were right, lawrpaul! I had a name-var tag, as his middle name on the marriage records, and susequent childrens birth records, was different to his birth record. Is that the correct way to record something like that or is there another way, which won't create a second listing?

Edit: Thanks, Virginia. Yes, thats what mine looked like.

  7. You don't have duplicate people. You apparently have people with more than one identical name. Look at the Person View of each person for a non-primary name in the Tag Box identical to the primary name in the Name Box.

I know they're not duplicates as they have the same ID numbers and everything is identical and I know that, for that person, I only entered the data once. It may have happened when I had to do a re-install and full restore, recently. I've added a screen shot to show what I mean. The name comes up twice in both the Picklist and the Project Explorer.

  8. I seem to have a few people duplicated; not sure how it happened but I'm wondering how I can combine them. They are clones, ie. same name, data, ID number, everything is the same. If I update one, the other is also updated, remove one, they both go. Any ideas how it happened and how to overcome it, or will I just have to live with it? If I do a report the offending name(s) only appear once.

    Cheers, Daryl.

  9. Go to the daughter's Person View. Double-click on the 'Mother' label to open the relationship tag. Change the mother's ID to the correct person. If necessary, use the [binocs] button to select the mother from the Picklist.

    Thanks Jim,

I'll give it go. I must have been editing my post when you posted.

    Cheers, Daryl

Add edit: That worked a treat, thank you.

  10. Hi,

It was obviously too late at night!! I've entered a daughter and her descenants (about 20 people) into the wrong generation. I've connected her to her grandmother instead of her mother. Short of manually deleting each tag, is there a way to shift the whole lot and connect them to the right person?

    Cheers, Daryl.

Edit: It's worse that I thought. On checking back I found I've attributed nine children (all siblings) to the wrong mother; there would be over 200 descenants. I guess I could do a "restore" to the last back-up before I made those entries and do them all again but I'm hoping for an easier option. Help!!

  11. Which you can do. The Output Columns tab has many options.

    1) Use the right-click menu to add or delete columns.

    2) Use the down arrow to open the list to change a column type.

    3) You are correct that the place levels use the U.S. edition names but you can use the place levels directly (Place L1, Place L2, etc.).

    4) Modify the width and heading label for each column.

    5) Use the sort field for each column (on the left) to control the sort order. (Be sure not to use the same sort value on two columns.)

The output columns are completely customizable as you wish. Wouldn't hurt to use the [Help] button.

    Thanks Jim,

I have these "seniors" moments when I forget there's a right click an the mouse!!

  12. Hi all,

When I run a "List of Places" report I expected to get an alphabetical list of the towns/cities that I have entered into the "City" box in my project. However, instead I get a list of the items I've put in the "Detail" box, in alphabetical order, (such as Pandurra Station, on board "Fairlie", New Church, etc)., followed by the town/city for the event. I would like to be able to create an alphabetical list of the towns and cities in my project but can't find any way of getting what I want. Can someone please make a suggestion on how to achieve my goal!

I'm using the UK edition and the columns in the report are: Details---Village/Area---Town/City---County/Region---Country. However, the report comes out with: Details column=correct, Village/Area column lists the towns, Town/City lists the UK County, County/Region lists Australian states (I'm in Australia), Country=correct.

I've noticed in other reports that I've run that I have to filter using Village/Area rather than Town/City to find which people have been connected to various places over their lifetime, so perhaps it's a foible of the UK edition?

Looking forward to a solution, hope that's clearer than mud!

    Cheers, Daryl

  13. Go directly to the Upgrade Center of Wholly Genes Inc. at http://www.whollygenes.com/Merchant2/merch...Screen=UPGRADES

Scroll down at page until you come to the section "The Master Genealogist -- Gold UK Edition".

Then download the patch for UK versions v6.00.000-v6.10.000 and save it e.g. on your desktop.

After the download completed move / copy that patch to your main TMG folder (where TMG is installed) ... then double-click to execute it from there.

Thank you, Vera. Unfortunately that achieved the same results as last time.

Perhaps I could move the existing program into a backup folder I have on another drive and then download the complete latest version instead of the upgrade. Would my current serial number work on another download? If it did work, I could then copy the necessary files across from my existing version. Or, it might be easier to restore from the latest backup. Are exhibits saved in a full backup? If not, I could copy them across, I guess.

How do I include quotes from another post, as you did in your reply to my post?

  14. Last year, for a family reunion, I printed out a descendant box chart, complete with thumbnail photos of most of the 100+ people on the chart. Yesterday I tried to do the same thing, with another branch of the family, but was unsuccessful. The odd thing was that five or six photos appeared but there should have been a lot more. When checking the same people in TMG the photos appear in the exhibits window, as expected, but don't transfer to the charts.

I can't find any settings under the "image" tab in the chart options that would help.

The only difference that I can think of is that I had to re-format my computer last June, which was after the last project, and after I installed from my v6 CD, I downloaded the update of the UK version from TMG website. The splash screen says I have Gold UK Edition, v6.07.00.

Anyone know where I'm going wrong, or if I am?

    Daryl

  15. According to the "help>about" button, my programme is Gold UK Edition, v6.07.00. When I downloaded and tried to run the update I received an error message, "This patch file is for the U.K. Edition of TMG and is not appropriate for your installation. Please choose "Check for an update from TMG help menu...etc"." Which, of course, is what I did in the first place before I received the message!

How do I go about upgrading to the latest version? My original installation was not the UK version, but the programme I'm using now is supposed to be the UK version, as I downloaded it after a computer re-format last year. Prior to that I was using v4.0c then v5 and lastly v6, but that was before the UK version was available (I think).

I would like to be able to run the latest version but I'm being frustrated by this error message. What's the answer, please?

    Cheers, Daryl.
