  1. Carol,

If you have not yet purchased the ASUS EEE computer, you might consider the OQO which is a full PC that fits in your pocket. You can get it with either a 120 GB Hard Drive, or a 64GB Solid State Drive, and then do a normal TMG install. I have one and use TMG on it when in the Library. OQO has also just announced a new model 2+ with the Intel Atom processor, the world’s first PC OLED display, and worldwide 3G capability. Based on the 1.86GHz Intel Atom processor and 2GB RAM, the OQO model 2+ offers performance up to twice as fast as its predecessor and includes an embedded touchscreen for easier input. The new model will be shown at CES in January.

Hadn't heard of the OQO -- that's an interesting little gadget! No - I was thinking of using my husband's ASUS -- but it sounds much too complicated for me so I'll just go back to my VIAO, which is lightweight enough. Thanks for the information - I'll keep my eyes out for that one.

  2. That's not exactly correct but it can be done.

You bought the wrong netbook to run TMG. The optimal netbook to run TMG would have a 80Gb or larger hard drive and you would do a normal installation.

Thanks, Jim. looks like this isn't the best idea for my limited abilities. Guess I'll just keep lugging my2# VIAO around - actually, the case is heavier than the computer! I appreciate the complete instructions and will keep them in case.......

  3. I was told by two people on the cruise that it was possible to put the entire TMG program, plus data, etc., on a thumb drive so that I may use the ASUS EEE tiny computer. So far I have not been able to figure out how to do this. Would some kind soul give me simple instructions on just how this is accomplished? A computer whiz I'm not!

TYIA........and a Happy New Year to everyone

  4. John - are your TMG files stored on the Parallels VM (ie. on the C:\ drive), or do you keep them on the Mac side and let TMG access them via a shared folder?

I was able to get Parallels to run TMG OK, but only in the former case, not the latter.

I'm having no problem running TMG 7.03 on Parallels, either. But I do keep everything on the PC side. I was wondering why you want to move them over to the Mac?

  5. I know this is probably pretty basic, so be gentle with me!

I want to delete a specific Tag Type, but apparently there are 15 people on my dataset where I have used this Tag, so I can't delete it (I want to re-allocate those 15 to a more appropriate Tag, but first I have to find them.)

So how do I find them? Presumably it is something to do with the Report function but I clearly haven't yet mastered its intricacies!

And once they are found, is there some process that will sweep them all up and amend the Tag type for all of them, or is it a one-by-one approach? (for only 15 that won't be much of a problem, but had it run into hundreds I would have hoped there might be a quicker method.)

For this use the report --> list of --> events --> Filter -->

Tag type label equals the name of the tag you want to change/delete, etc.

Under "Options" you can list the info you want if you like. I don't.

Then run the list -- this will give you a list of everyplace that tag is used. I've always gone through and changed each one (like you, they were few). It may be that TMGU will change them - I've not tried it. I prefer to do it one and one because then I have control of sentences, etc.

    Not hard.........Carol Collins

  6. I have been using The Master Genealogist program for a number of years on my PC. I am thinking about buying an Apple Computer and wondering what that would involve in transferring my genealogical data to the new computer. I know the new Apple Computers allow you to have a Windows operating system along with its usual Apple OS. I am curious about the experiences of those who have switched O.S.s' and how it has gone. Are you pleased with the change or are you sorry you ever considered. I appreciate any input on this subject.

    Thanks

    Doug

P.S. Does The Master Genealogist have an Apple version?

No, TMG does not have an Apple version. However -- using Parallels (as in the reply above) you'll never know that you're not using a PC. It runs beautifully (actually, a little faster), does whatever you want it to do, etc. I highly recommend it! That way you can have your cake and eat it too :D And you can also use the other PC programs you're used to, ie: Quicken, etc.
