  1. Hi I have a query re the above and would like to know how others deal with it. A large proportion of my ancestors were born in Ulpha, Cumberland, which pre 1974 was in Cumberland but is now in Cumbria. If they had registered their births within their home county they would have come under Bootle Cul, but the nearest RO was actually Ulverston which they quite often used. I enter Cumberland as the county when I add the birth, but am in a quandry as to what to type in for the county on the birth registration tag as Ulverston reads Lancashire, Cumberland, Cumbria. Thank you for taking the time to read this. Regards Half Pint
  2. Registration Districts

Hi Neil Many thanks for replying to my query. I enter the birth, marriage and death separately from the registration as I may have more detailed knowledge of where the event took place and also over time I may purchase the certificate [when funds and hubby allow]. I have found that it is a lot quicker and easier to add the registration information in the memo field than to create a new source everytime I create a new tag and when I come to purchase it the iformation is straight in front of me. Your thoughts have given me an idea, in that I really don't need the name of the county where I have the actual address where the event took place so it may be better just to keep the county blank, what do you think? Again many thanks for taking the time to "talk" to me. Regards Half Pint
  3. Hi I must admit that I thought it was just me with the problem on the "add person" on my one and only data set. Regards Half Pint
  4. Hi Steve Welcome You will probably receive many suggestions, but here is my naming pattern. I do as you suggest but I also add in, what the exhibit is, and if the year is not in that title, the year ie 1851 English Census Lancashire - John Stephenson 1190 1861 English Census Cumberland - John Stephenson 1190 Marriage - John Stephenson 1190 and Dorothy Skirrow 2381 1874 Death - John Stephenson 1190 1889 I do this as to date I have 17 Joseph Stephenson's in my tree, and its not a one name study These are the names of the exhibits and the file names are 1841 English Census 1851 English Census etc etc Births Marriages Deaths I hope this helps. Regards Half Pint
  5. Hi I have been where you are [for a different reason] and so I know that at the moment you cannnot even begin to explain how you feel, please please believe me when I say that if John and the support team can help they will do. YOU ARE DEFINITELY NOT ON YOUR OWN. Please let us know how you get on. Regards Half Pint
  6. Hi Whilst reading this can you please be aware that I am not at all computer literate. At the moment I have both V6 and V7 on my laptop [a long story] and eventually I will remove V6. I also do a lot of transcribing work for the LOPC [Lancashire On-line Parish Clerks] which means that I also hold a lot of parish records on here. The space on my 2 MB laptop is very quickly deminishing and so I have bought a 8GB Flash Drive. Will I be ok to hold my TMG on it, and if not, what the problems would be. Regards Half Pint
  7. TMG and Flash Drives

Hi Thanks for this. I think I'll only put my LOPC work on it. These are all copies of CD's etc and so if damaged I can always re-copy. Regards Half Pint
  8. Hi I only downloaded the program 3 days ago so please bear with my clumsiness. I want to import my tree from Legacy but when I go into the screen to import this, the next step buttons etc are below the bottom of my screen. Can someone please tell me how I can raise the view. I have tried to use the arrow key that comes onto the screen but it won't let me take it any higher due to the tool bar at the top. Many thanks for your help. Half Pint
  9. Project Explorer - Scroll Bar

Hi Larry I hadn't thought about it until I read your email, but on trying it on my laptop I get the same result. Regards Half Pint
  10. Hi I have made a complete ..................... I started to work on my husbands family and decided to keep them in the same project but in a different data set. I added one person and then decided to keep them all in my main dataset so merged the two as described in the help section. However, I have now ended up with that last person in my main dataset three times each with the ID of 0:0, how, I haven't got a clue so I decided to delete him and re-key him but it won't allow me saying that there is no such person. Can sks please help me. Regards Half Pint
  11. Project Explorer

Hi I have started a new project and I have the Project Explorer open on my main screen but am having a complete blank on how to link it so that when I move onto a name it automatically changes to that name on the Details page. It is a long time since I did it in my other project and I am just totally blank. Thank you for your time. Regards Half Pint
  12. Project Explorer

<br /><br /><br /> Right click on Project explorer and select Link Project Explorer to Other Windows. Hi Many many thanks for this. As soon as I created the new project I set the Project Explorer to only show primary names and then tried to right click on the PE to do the link but it just wouldn't let me, so I started to doubt that was the way to do it. After your reply I tried again with no success, so went in and canceled the primary only, tried again and it worked, hurrah. Again many thanks Regards Half Pint
  13. Hi When I back up my project, the following message appears: "Input file read failure - this occurs when a file read operation is performed on a Zip file that is locked or restricted by another process" I only have the one project, besides the Sample projects that come with TMG 7 and am manually entering all my information ie no gedcoms etc have been added, also all my exhibits are single items that are added as and when they are appropriate. What I am trying to say is that I have not added a Zip File and do not know where to even start looking for it. If someone could suggest what my next step is, I would really appreciate it. Regards Half Pint
  14. Hi This is for curiosity purposes only [lol] which in plain english means I'm being nosey. I understand the coloured symbols on the lefthand side of the forum screen show whether the topic has been replied to etc and a small lock within this can show if a topic is locked/unlocked etc but can sks please explain what a large black dot means. It is showing on one of mine and I do know that in the middle ages a large black dot on a front door meant that their was the black death within the house. I am hoping and praying it doesn't mean the same about me. Regards Half Pint
  15. Forum Topic Codings

thank goodness for that thanks Terry
  16. Your question is exactly the kind of "how do I do ..." that this forum is great at answering. None of us can keep in our head all the possible features of TMG. Setting flags based on a filter like you mentioned is one of the really great features of TMG. I am constantly creating temporary flags, setting them based on a filter, then deleting them when I don't want them anymore. (Remember to Optimize your project regularly.) For example, look at the Report Options for both the List of People report and the List of Events report. Check out the Secondary Output tab where it has the option to Change a Flag value. You can set up a filter for such a report, and instead of actually printing the report you can change the value of a flag based on which people in your dataset match that filter criteria. A really great capability. For example, you could chose a List of Events report, where any Birth group event date was before 1842 but after say 1741 and death not before 1841 and change a flag. Experiment. I think you will find something like this will do what you want. Hope this gives you ideas, Hi Michael There are two main reasons why this database is to me, simply the best. When you first download the trial version it appears to be so very very daunting, but if you stick with it, you suddenly realize that it can actually grow with you, from being a complete novice to being a boffin in your own time and in your own way, which means that you can grow as your research grows without having to either purchase or use any other program. The other reason is probably the biggest and most important, the help and suggestions that is out here for everyone is sometimes beyond words. I know that at times, the questions I have asked may seem very "dumb" [but at the time they were important to me] and they have always been answered in minutes by both other users and the support staff with generosity and never have they patronised me, which I know has happened to other people using other databases. I haven't got into the report side of it yet, as I am still concentrating on my rekeying [silly me when using V6 innocently imported a corrupt gedcom]. The problem was found by technical support just as V7 was launched so I bought it and am now manually re-keying everything back. Some people would probably look on this as a chore but I have definitely not thought this as my learning curve is so great that I haven't got time nor inclination to go along that route. When I do get to that point I will definitely take on board what you have suggested but I must admit that although I cannot be classed as "a frilly girlie" I do like all the accent colours showing on my screen [lol]. it makes it look as though I have done more work than I have. Again many thanks for taking the time to reply to my email. Regards Half Pint
  17. Hi Virginia Many thanks for your suggestion. I tried it and it worked, as I knew it would. Going back to our earlier messages, I have now re-keyed just over 500 of my 1600 people into V7 and am still thoroughly enjoying every minute, even straying and researching lines that I hadn't taken further. I can set up initial flags, but have not quite sorted in my head how I can set up a flag to find as an example "all people born before the 1841 census." So I set up over 30 flags when I started re-keying everyone and connected these to accent groups and they work wonderfully ie if I feel like having a night looking at census indexes I just load the Census Accent and it gives me a different colour for each one missing for everyone, or if I want to spend a night on the IGI I have set up my flags to differentiate between those bmds that are post 1837 and need registration indexes, it is so simple. The only program that I have found that has anything at all better than TMG is the Research Log on Legacy (and even that isn't perfect) so my one wish would be to have ours a little more like that one but it is such a little wish that its worth waiting for. I hope your research is going as well as mine. Again many thanks for your time. Regards Half Pint
  18. Hi I have just been working away on v7 when I suddenly had a Mozilla Firefox Error Message appear on my screen, I replied that I wanted to send a message report to them and a message came up saying that there was a fatal error on my v7 and v7 shut down. The error message then disappeared. I also had v6 open on my laptop but this does not seem to have been affected. I am asking for advice as I realize that Tech Support need to be contacted but am very concerned that if I try and re-open it, to send them a Trouble Report I may do even more damage. Regards Half Pint
  19. project explorer

Hi Arthur I don't believe that you are doing anything wrong, because if you are, so am I. Since I have been using TMG, which I love, my Project Explorer, which I also have down the left hand side of my screen has shown a gap every so often. When this happens the rest of the screen freezes and I cannot add flags, people etc. I have found that if I click on a different focus group and then change it back immediately to the one I am using, all my names re-appear and the screen unfreezes. I have always just thought of it as being a "glitch" in the system. I know it doesn't help but thought you might like to know that you aren't on your own. Regards Half Pint
  20. GUI

Hi When I was looking for a database to hold my research, I chose to look at TMG because I liked the layout. I don't want to spend the majority of my time searching to find what information I have on each person as you do with the majority of them. I can also change the layout, fonts and colours on a daily basis, so please, please, please don't change it. Regards Half Pint
  21. Hi I have a project with 1600 names in it. Over the past few weeks I have started at RIN no 1 and have been cleaning, tidying etc, earlier tonight I was working on no 132 when I had to go back into no 9 and alot of my work has gone. I am not a newbie to TMG but not that computer literate so have stuck to very basics ie if I want a different tag name I find the nearest existing one and copy it. One tag that hasn't been touched is the Death Tag but when I've gone into several tonight the citation I had typed in has gone and so has the exhibit. This is not the first time it has happened. So I thought ah yes, go and restore from a back up I did last week and so I did only to find that they were missing then and now I have lost the updates that I have done inbetween. I do a full project back up everytime I log off. Can sks please please tell me where I am going wrong, it must be me. Regards Half Pint
  22. Please, please help me

Hi Virginia I am sorry if I didn't explain myself very well ie the copying of tags. I meant that I am not up to creating my own tag sentences yet, so I went into the Master Tag List and copied the Death Tag and then edited it to read Death of Child and have done the same with the Census Tag to read Census 1861, Census 1901 etc, I didn't mean my email to read that I had used the same tag twice. I have looked for several citations on the list as you suggested and have not found them but will continue looking. Thank you for your help Regards Half Pint
  23. Please, please help me

Thank you Ken for replying to me so quickly. I was only going back due to so many things being lost previously, at that time I nearly gave up on TMG, now I just don't know. I know it may sound very dramatic but I feel as though I my heart as been pulled out, so many many hours work for nothing. I think I will go to bed and see if it looks any rosier in the morning. Regards Half Pint
  24. Adding Exhibits

Hi When you add a new tag you have a choice of adding an exhibit on the Tag Entry or on the Citation screen. Could sks please explain to me what difference it makes where they are added and the benefits / negatives with each decision. Many thanks for taking time to read this, it really is appreciated. Regards Half Pint
  25. Hi I appreciate that with TMG everyone has their own way of adding a Gedcom, mine having been sent to me by my sister, to their project and would like suggestions ie My data has been cleaned, do I now add a cleaning flag set at ? for the new additions? As I go through each new addition and clean it up, do I add it to a focus group so that I can then add it to the original dataset? All suggestions will be great fully received Regards Half Pint
