  1. Hi I am visiting Whitehaven Record Office on Saturday for a week [am taking my sleeping bag] and would like to take a report with me to help find my ancestors and new family members. I was thinking a long the lines of a list of village/town place names with all the surnames currently connected to them so that I can take notes of anyone with those surnames on a particular film and enter all the information into my tree when I get home. Does anyone have any suggestions. Regards Half
  2. Visiting A Record Office

hi teresa I have about 3,000 people so far and am going on the train which I have to change twice, carrying a suitcase and a laptop. So this sounds a really good idea but toooooo big in this instance lol Thanks for suggestion though as it will be perfect when I go to our local one which is a couple of miles away in the car Lin
  3. Emigration

Hi How do I deal with the following events: Elizabeth Eames leaves England on the 24th July 1834 and arrives in Australia on the 26th October 1834. The emigration tag deals with her leaving England but what can I use for her arrival. All suggestions will be considered. Thanks Half Pin
  4. Hi As my research progresses I am now encountering ancestors who were transported to the colonies from here in the UK as criminals. I am presently using the emigration and immigration tags but they seem inadequate, does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can use instead. Regards Half Pint
  5. Emigration

Hi Jim Many thanks for this. If I had thought about it, it is obvious, so please put it down to me having a "grey day" Again many thanks Half Pint
  6. Middlesex, London et al.

I think it was one of those instances where there is no "right or wrong way" and so as long as we stay consistent in our own projects we will be ok [lol]
  7. Middlesex, London et al.

Hi Terry I asked a very similar question on a site here in the UK re Cumberland / Cumbria and was told the following, in no uncertain terms. "Contrary to popular belief the counties of Cumberland, Rutland and the like, did not disappear in the great shake up of 1974. The counties did and still do exist, it is only the administrative centres that have altered". I agree with Terry R in that I put in the address as it was at the time of the event ie my dad was born in 1933 so is listed as being born in Cumberland but for my nephew who was born in 2007 it is listed as being Cumbria. I hope this helps. Half Pint That is what I have done and tend to leave the same Chapman code in place to link them together i.e. ignore county and use the Chapman field (replaces Temple) and then Shropshire and Salop (two names for the same county) both are SAL, likewise the more obvious Devon and Devonshire with DEV. Middlesex itself is an interesting case as it surrounded the City of London (the square mile) from the SW to the East. Then Greater London appeared and we have London Borough of xxxxxx. Middlesex disappeared... except that our main cricket club is the MCC (Middlesex cricket club) and it is oddly a postal county without having a proper boundary. That isn't technically correct, but people still know Twickenham as being in Middlesex and address mail that way. By the way, that is a big generalisation so anyone who wants to disagree, feel free to do so, I only used it to make the point that our Capital City has changed radically from the old format to the new.
  8. Still Waiting For Version 8

My son gave me money for christmas so that I could upgrade to v8 when it came out. I have since spent it on something else.
  9. Missing GOREP

Hi I have sent an email to support but as it is the Easter Break I am not expecting anyone to be working and wondered if anyone can help. I am a complete idiot where computers are concerned. I cannot send you a Trouble Report as I cannot enter the Report. When I try to enter a tag it opens and then immediately closes. If I try to change a flag etc I get the error window saying words to the effect that GOREP is missing. I can validate my file and it shows that I have no problems but when I try to close and save my project it will not allow me. Regards Half Pint
  10. Missing GOREP

Hi Virginia After I sent my last reply I sat here for a couple twiddling my thumbs and for some reason I decided to re-open my Project. When I did everything seemed ok so I checked a few things ie a Report and moving between tags and did so without any apparent problems. Now I am totally confused. Regards Half
  11. Missing GOREP

Hi Virginia The Help / Check for Update let me close the project but just before it closed a message came up saying that a component was missing so a check could not be made. I tried to type it out for you but it disappeared too quickly. I don't know if this is connected but when I went back into my project to close it down, the persons name was missing from the detail window [she did not have her parents entered so I cannot see the extent of the omission]]. I am using Vista and went into the Error Report as you suggested and here is a copy of those for today. 4-04-2010, 20:25:16 1923Object GOREP is not found. 14 FRMCHART5.UNLOAD 04-04-2010, 20:26:05 1923Object GOREP is not found. 0 04-04-2010, 20:26:06 1923Object GOREP is not found. 0 04-04-2010, 20:26:17 1923Object GOREP is not found. 0 04-04-2010, 20:26:19 1923Object GOREP is not found. 0 04-04-2010, 20:27:15 1923Object GOREP is not found. 0 04-04-2010, 20:48:46 1923Object GOREP is not found. 0 04-04-2010, 20:49:08 1923Object GOREP is not found. 0 04-04-2010, 20:49:59 13Alias 'GOREP' is not found. 7 FRMEXPLORER.CNTPVIEW.CNTTREE.RLRELOADCONTENT_ASSIGN 04-04-2010, 21:38:46 13Alias 'GOREP' is not found. 7 FRMEXPLORER.CNTPVIEW.CNTTREE.RLRELOADCONTENT_ASSIGN 04-04-2010, 21:40:55 13Alias 'GOREP' is not found. 7 FRMEXPLORER.CNTPVIEW.CNTTREE.RLRELOADCONTENT_ASSIGN 04-04-2010, 22:02:27 1923Object GOREP is not found. 2 FRMFLAGMANAGER.CMDOK.CLICK 04-04-2010, 22:02:29 1923Object GOREP is not found. 542 FRMFLAGMANAGER.MOK 04-04-2010, 22:02:30 1923Object GOREP is not found. 16 FRMFLAGMANAGER.CMDOK.CLICK 04-04-2010, 22:03:14 1923Object GOREP is not found. 2 FRMFLAGMANAGER.RELEASE 04-04-2010, 22:03:15 13Alias 'GOREP' is not found. 36 AFDATE 04-04-2010, 22:47:31 13Alias 'GOREP' is not found. 36 AFDATE 04-04-2010, 22:47:33 13Alias 'GOREP' is not found. 36 AFDATE Thank you so much for trying to help me.
  12. Research Log

Hi I have over 14,000 tasks in my research log and would like to delete them all, does sks know of a way to do this "on mass" or would I have to do it individually. Many thanks for taking the time to read this. Regards Half Pint
  13. Research Log

I knew someone would know of a way. Thank you Jim you have saved me many hours of monotonous keying, thank you.
  14. Hi Can sks please help me as I have been "having a grey moment" for the last two hours. I would like to produce a FGS which gives all the information I have on the main person and their spouse. Also, their children up to and when they marry but no further informtion on them, as this would be on their own sheet. Regards Half Pint
  15. How to handle Wales, Cornwall and the like

I must admit that I always have a heavy heart before pressing the button to produce the drop down menu as I don't know whether I will have to find England, Great Britain or the United Kingdom.
  16. How to handle Wales, Cornwall and the like

Dear Neil, I'm not sure that a non-Briton -- and non-Commonwealther -- like myself is qualified to enter this discussion. I do note that on the three U.S. censuses in which I've found the Holmeses from Swansea that they identified their own & their parents' country of origin as "Wales." Evidently they considered themselves Welsh. I wonder if they would also have thought of themselves as "British," in the way Americans think of themselves as, e.g., New Yorkers and Americans? I'm not quite sure what the significance of Welsh 3rd g-grandparents is, but I would think that the style should work so that they aren't lumped indiscriminately with everyone from the British Isles. Robert Hi Here is the history from a "Brit" [lol] Great Britain - The Kingdom of Great Britain resulted from the political union of the kingdoms of England and Wales with Scotland in the Acts of Union 1707 on 1 May 1707 under Queen Anne. United Kingdom - In 1801, under a new Act of Union, this kingdom merged with the Kingdom of Ireland to create the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. After the Irish War of Independence in 1922, most of Ireland seceded from the Union. Currently the kingdom is named the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Commonwealth - this is made up of GB and other countries which used to make up the British Empire ie India, Jamiaca etc that has been created for trading purposes etc We all have our own national identity ie we are Scottish, English, Welsh or Irish. When we are on the British mainland we tend to use this terminology but when abroad ie mainland Europe or the USA the English for some reason usually change to being British. In the 1990's power started to devolve from the central Parliament in London to Wales and Scotland although central government is still in charge of defence, taxation etc. Before this all laws were the same for England and Wales but Scotland has always had some differences, some which affect family history ie some parts of criminal law, property law and marriage laws. Counties are the localised administrative centres within each "country". Church records are usually held at the Record Offices within the particular county and birth, marriage and death records are held with the county and at the central GRO [General Record Office]. So a typical address for a letter from the USA should be [ficticious] Mrs G Hope 23 High Street East Goscote [the village] Leicestershire [the county] England LE5 4DX [the postcode] I hope this helps Half Pint
  17. Hi Another question [lol] Whilst sorting out the FGS [which is now exactly how I want it to appear] I needed to sort out my sources. After tidying them up, amalgamating them etc I now have gaps in the numbering where some have been deleted. An example of this is: GRO Birth Index No 148 GRO Death Index No 149 GRO Marriage Index No 151 I have noticed that we have the facility to renumber them if we wish. Can sks please tell me if there are any advantages or disadvantages to doing this other than keeping them neat and tidy. Regards Half Pint ps Terry if you have read this and are confused I apolgise in advance [lol]
  18. Hi I was told to ask questions [lol] so here goes. Having nearly got my FGS's set up as I want them I have tried to include the citation details and memo's along with the tag details and sources. The problem is that I cannot find where I "press the buttons" for this. Can sks please help me. Regards Half Pint
  19. Family Group Sheet

Hi Terry I really am sorry if I confused you, it was unintentional, but somehow you managed to answer my questions perfectly. Thank you. Regards Half Pint
  20. Hi I have decided to print off a FGS for everyone in my project. Before I do this I decided to go through and clean up all my sources etc and I have found something I cannot find an explanation for. Isaac Bone birth birth reg census 1861 - member of household occupation marriage marriage reg census 1871 - 1st principle / his wife is the 2nd principle occupation census 1881 - 1st principle / his wife is the 2nd principle occupation census 1891 - 1st principle / his wife is the 2nd principle occupation census 1901 - 1st principle / his wife is the 2nd principle occupation death death reg on all of the censuses it has printed the citation detail but not the citation memo except for the 1891 which does have the memo. All of them have witnesses [which do not print on any of the tags], the same surety etc etc and I can find no differences at all between them that would cause this to print. To be honest I would like it to print on all of them but can find no where in the report options that will allow me to do this. Can sks with more knowledge than me [which would obviously not be difficult] know why this is happening. Thank you for your time. Regards Half Pint
  21. Family Group Sheet

Hi Michael and Virginia Thank you so much for replying to my plea. I don't feel so daunted now and as you suggest take it one step at a time, reading all the tutorials and asking questions. Thank you for being here for me. Regards Half Pint
  22. Family Group Sheet

Hi Terry You have always been here for me over the years and on several occasions when I have said that I have never run a report you have suggested that I do. So I have taken the plunge and to be quite honest I feel like how an 8 year old would feel when picking up a manual on "how to build a tv complete with working parts", totally out of my depth and about an inch tall. So I am going to go away into a very quiet corner and study your website and the TMG video tutorials and try again. Thank you for trying to help. Regards Half Pint
  23. Family Group Sheet

Hi I think I have found out why. On the 1891 his surname was spelt Born instead of Bone. On this and all the other entries I always add all those present as witnesses and then after the 91 I went in to each individual and added a name variation tag. Could this be the cause Regards Half
  24. Hi I was working on TMG along with several other sites open and went to the loo, when I returned all my sites including TMG had closed down, although the machine was switched on and we had not had a power cut. I can now go onto the internet and open all my other games etc except for TMG. When I try and open TMG it comes up with the message above and will not let me enter. HELP. I am not very computer literate and as it only seems to be happening on this, is it a TMG problem. I backed up TMG before I went to bed last night but have added several hours work this morning. Thank you for taking the time to read this and hope to hear from someone soon. Regards Half Pint
  25. Alias "FILE_N" is not found

Hi Virginia I finally got into the file and both Windows were already set to 2 as they should have been. When my son finally got home from work [it was like waiting for paint to dry] he managed to get into TMG. We got into my project and it had lost all the information that I had keyed in this morning, but it was there, that is the main thing. The paranoia has now lessened. I don't know if it will help but I created a new project and restored yesterdays backup and will work on that one from now on. Again, many many thanks Regards Half Pint I had further problems with it so have had to re-install v7 and re key all yesterdays info, I am just so so relieved that was all I lost. Regards Half Pint
