  1. Hi Vera I hadn't installed any new software for perhaps a week. I had been working pretty much in TMG all day with no problem. I usually have Internet Explorer 6 and Outlook 2003 also up and running in the background. Occasionally during the day I also opened a Word 2003 document for reference. The following is the text from the vfp7err.log: Fatal error: Exception code=C0000005 @ 2006.08.14 09:00:08 PM. I don't run this work app every day, but have used it numrous times during the past month (that I have had TMG) with no problems. I don't know if it makes any difference or not, but I doubt if I have ever had both it and TMG running at the same time. I had to use the work app related again just this morning and then went back in to TMG after I finished working, but everything still appears to be working normally. Thanks
  2. Well, this morning I cannot reproduce the error that I was having last night, and I have no explanation for it. Last evening, over the course of about 2 hours, I replicated the same error message 5 times, the last couple of times after having optimized my data, rebuilt my indexes, checking file integrity and finally cold-booting the computer. No matter what I did, I could re-create the problem. But this morning is a different story. I was trying to show my wife what I had encounterd, and could not re-create the problem. The application appears to be functioning perfectly. The error messages last night were fairly exciting, as well as terminal. Any thoughts as to what might have been causing it to happen would be gratefully appreciated. I am running TMG 6.09 under Windows XP Media Center Edition. I am running on a desk model PC with an Athlon dual core processor, 2 gigs of RAM. and a 300 gig hard drive. Was my application just having a bad-hair-nite? I'm sorry if my previous message caused anyone any inconvenience in trying to replicate the error that I was receiving.
  3. What might be the best way to handle a "Guardian" situation in TMG? It crops up several times in my data, the most notable example being the following: My 8th great-grandfather Arthur Turner died in 1666 in the same year as his second wife. They left 5 children, who were the product of his 2 marriages. The oldest was about 15 and the youngest probably about 5 or 6. They were placed with 5 separate guardians, in at least 1 case a godfather, in other cases friends, and in 1 or 2 cases of people of unknown relationship. When I brought my data in from Family Tree Maker created "Note" tags for these events (I haven't looked back at FTM, but I suspect they were probably notes there as well). Is this the best way to handle this in TMG? In all 5 cases I know the name of the individual that each child was placed with as guardian, although at this point I don't know a whole lot more about them. Should I consider using a tag that would show a relationship between the child and his guardian? And if so, which tag should I use, or do I need to create a new tag to handle this? Any advice here would be greatly appreciated.
  4. Hello My name is Mike Daugherty. I am new to the TMG community as of about a week ago. I am currently a registered user of version 6.09. In fact, I am also practically new to the genealogy community in general. But I have recently received 3 volumes of family information from my mother that have never been entered by our family in any sort of electronic format. After a couple of months of researching different genealogical products, I settled on TMG as the most suited to my needs. I have been eagerly reading posts in this forum ever since trying to pick up pointers about using this incredible program. The biggest problem I am having in learning to use TMG lies in the fact that it can do so many things in so many different ways. And for a novice genealogist like myself, sometimes it is difficult to decide just how I should do something. A case in point comes to mind regarding exhibits in TMG. 1. For the general run of paper-based exhibits, like copies of Family Group Sheets, birth certificates, baptismal certificates, obituary notices and the like, is it better to scan these items as jpegs or pdfs? My scanner can easily do either. 2. Is it better to store my exhibits within the PICS folder under the TMG application files, I should I store them in a separate location? 3. Is it better to attach them to the project or maintain them separately from the project? 4. If, at some later time I want to move all of my image files to some other location (say an external hard drive), how do I go about updating all of the tags in TMG as to the new location of the images. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. I expect that as time goes on I will have quite a bucket-full of questions about the best ways to use this database. Thanks Mike Daugherty
  5. View History: more than ten?

For what it's worth, I'm afraid I have to agree with Laura here. I found myself tripping over the 10 limit several times over the past few days. Would this be a difficult thing to "re-incorporate" back into the application in the future?
  6. Could someone please explain the way that the checkmark for children of the last viewed spouse in the Children form works? In my database, it appears to be working inconsistently, and I don't know if I am doing something incorrectly, if I have a problem with my data, or if there is a bug in the software. All of my data was imported into TMG a couple of weeks ago, and none of the data in the following example has since been modified. I am only going to cite a single example, but this behavior seems consistent throughout my database. I have a gentleman in my database who had 5 children by two different spouses. He was married to the first wife in 1649 and had children by her in 1651, 1653 and 1655. The first wife died around 1659 and he remarried in 1661. He then had 2 more children by her, 1 in 1662 and 1 in 1665. Whenever I view his record in the Details form, the 2 children by the second wife are checked in the Children form and the 3 children by the first wife have no checkmark. If I bring up the second wife in the Details form it shows those same 2 children with checkmarks. If I then bring up the record for the first wife, it shows the 3 children by her with checkmarks. But when I return to the father's record, it still shows checkmarks for only the children by the second wife. Is this behaving properly?
  7. Oh, I see, when I do it that way it works fine. I was simply shifting from spouse to spouse by double clicking on spouse names in the Person section of the Detail view and when I did that it never updated the checkmarks, regardless of who was the last spouse whose record had been visible in the Detail view. Thanks
  8. I have been contemplating buying a PDA to carry around with me so that I don't have to lug my 9 lb. laptop everywhere I go. Since I know virtually nothing about such devices, I've been reading everything I can find here about Pocket Genealogist and GedStar PRO, and about PalmOS devices and Windows devices in an attempt to understand the positives and negatives of each. My intention is to use the device mostly for reference and a bit of note-taking, not so much for data input. I also have a wireless home network at my home with internet connectivity, so it would be nice if the PDA can access it easily. The Palm device that I have looked at is the LifeDrive Mobile Manager. In the Pocket PC arena, the only one that I have actually had my hands on is a Dell Axim X51v, but I understand that there is a VERY wide selection range available for these. What things should I consider in making a choice? Are there any factors that might make me choose GedStar PRO over Pocket Genealogist, or vice versa? Is one easier to use, more functional or more stable than the other? Are there any factors that might make me choose a Palm device over a Windows device? Processing speed is a consideration, especially since I will undoubtedly do a great deal of filtering and searching. Simplicity and ease of use and operation of both the device and the OS is a large consideration, especially if you were to ask my wife. The clearer and brighter the display the better, as my eyes are ageing fast. The 4 gig onboard memory in the Palm LifeDrive is attractive. If it should turn out that I should purchase a Windows device rather than a Palm, are there any particular makes and models that I should especially look at. Here I would be interested not only in power and features, but also in dependabiility, maintenance, and the life expectancy of the device. Any advice from anyone who has experience with these devices would be greatly appreciated.
  9. PDA Devices

My thanks to everyone for the candid comments. That is one of the things that I have found to be so wonderful about the forum here. After years of sniffing around photography forums, which I must admit have been unmoderated, I have grown so weary of all of the hate and discontent that goes on there. I've only been a member here for a few weeks, but I've already been really impressed with the courteous behavior and helpful attitudes that I've seen here. I hope to get out to a couple of my local stores tomorrow morning to look at several PDAs. Locally, most places have several Palm models. Windows models are a little harder to find. In fact, what I am starting to find is that most places around me here in Maryland don't stock a lot of either. A couple of the salesmen have told me that sales have been very sluggish, especially in the higher end models. They say it is because they are fairly expensive and are having trouble competing with the breed of smart-phones that are out on the market now. I will take all of your comments into consideration while I am out looking.
  10. Image Viewer

I'm a real newcomer here, and I have a heck of a lot to learn, but I would like to say that I'm a little bit surprised that people would even want to edit images from within TMG. Perhaps that's because I have just spent days trying to figure out the best and clearest way to capture images and store them in a safe location where they will never inadvertently be changed, especially in the case of jpegs or other "lossy" image formats. So my approach would be to put my images in a "non-lossy" format off to the side on a detachable hard drive with periodic backups to CD or DVD. I would then place copies of these images, as jpegs or whatever format was desired, in a folder on my root drive. The location of this folder, I'll call it TMGImages just to give it a name for discussion, will always remain the same whether I am working with the application on my desktop or on my laptop, or on the next generation of PC down the road. I will link to the images from TMG. In the scenario outlined above, the last thing that I would want would be for the images to be edited within the TMG viewer, even simple edits like 90 degree rotation. This is because I will always be working with a copy of the image from within TMG, never with the original. So if I wanted to make any change to an image, I would make it to a copy of the "non-lossy" format original, replace the original if I am satisfied with it, and then put a new copy in place in the folder that TMG links to. If I edited the image within TMG, I would then be faced with having to make the same change to the original anyway. Am I off base here? This entire thread has caught me a little bit by surprise, because during the years I have been using various image viewers for editing photos that I have taken with my digital cameras, I don't know that I have ever encountered an image viewer that modified an image that was simply being viewed.
  11. Hi John Thanks for the information. I suspected that moving or renaming exhibits could be a painful process if it wasn't handled properly. I've been trying to work up a decent naming convention right from the start to (hopefully) cut down on later frustrations. Based upon your comment, I will probably place my images in a folder right on my root drive, since I feel pretty confident that I will have one of those regardless of whatever PC I am using TMG on down the road. I was initially inclined to put them in my My Documents folder, but the path to that can vary somewhat depending upon the operating system and which user you happen to be. I went to your site and downloaded and installed your TMG utility program. I have been working in a database design environment for many years, and I can readily see the advantages of some of the functions in your utility. It looks quite powerful, and perhaps quite dangerous if used improperly. I'll be very sure to backup my project well before attempting to use it for anything (as you suggest). What is the advantage of PNG files over other image formats? My scanner will quite happily save files in about a dozen different file formats, PNG being one of them. I gave it a quick look when I was testing document scans, and didn't use it, first because I don't know much about the format, and second because the file sizes were coming out 2 to 3 times larger than the same scan in JPEG, even when I set the JPEG to the highest quality. Since I could ultimately have several thousand images, I thought I might as well save the space, but I'm willing to rethink that if there is a decided advantage to using PNG. Mike
