  1. To anyone interested in this subject: It took a couple of hours of experimentation but I was able to do this myself using Excel and Notepad. I also used Lee Hoffman's Related_by Flag to automatically generate the TMG file of people of interest for DNA purposes. I am not a programmer and the Excel formulas are not elegant, but the file has been created with almost no manual editing. The Gedcom consists of surnames only, birth/death years, birth/death states. If anyone else wants to do this or something similar I'd be happy to share my process.
  2. Thanks for your quick response, Terry. If you find any other genealogy programs or tools that can create this type of Gedcom, please let me know. I want to create a paired-down file for DNA sites (GEDMATCH.com, 23andMe, AncestryDNA, and Family Tree DNA) and am uncomfortable submitting the entire fields for my tree. Maybe others would also be interested in this?
  3. Hi, Can anyone tell me how to create a Gedcom that contains only surnames, birth year, birth state, death year, death state? I have about 1000 people in my focus group that should be included in the Gedcom file. Thank you!
  4. Does anyone know how to create a custom tag that will show whether a person in my file is a blood relative or not? I don't want to have to type it in for each of my 2000 relatives, so I would want it to be automated in some way. This would be similar to the automatic relationship tag, but I need to be able to use it to filter my project. This is becoming more important when I share my tree for autosomal DNA tests. Just sharing pedigrees is not enough because not everyone can trace their ancestry back as far as I can, and I have descendants of many collateral ancestors that I want to share. Just a Y/N tag would be helpful, but if there is a way to copy the results of the automatic relationship tag, that would be fine, too. If someone is related to me in multiple ways, it would be OK to record the entry as "multiple." Thanks, Crystal
  5. First and Last use of a Place

Jim, This works great! Outputing the tag is helpful. It does generate a lot of pages, but I can get what I need by just viewing the first and last pages of the screen output without wasting paper. Thanks, Crystal
  6. Hi! I would like to create List of Places report that shows the first and last date that a place is used across all event types in my data set. Also, I would like to be able to filter the report. I would like the output columns to be as follows: city, county, state, first date, last date It would also be nice if there were a way to find the events that match this first date and last date. I will use this report to research the local events that may have impacted my family. Is it possible to do this? Thanks! Crystal
  7. Somehow the values for Last edited, reference, age, children, Soundex, etc. have gone missing. The other info box lists the "type" column, but the "value" column has disappeared. How do I get it back? It is really handy to be able to see the last edited date on this window. Another thing is that when I right click on the area, select "customize other info box", and try to disable one of the fields, I get a an error message. Thanks, Crystal
