Already noted the topic on TMG on a Mac, thanks.
I am/was using the backup facility in TMG. I exported to both GED and sqz. Unfortunately, the sqz did not contain my exhibits either so I need to load up the old disk and pull that data back anyway. I'm going to try TMG via VirtualBox to see if I can get stuff back that way too.

I recently moved from Windows to Mac and I'm trying to restore a TMG 7 GEDCOM backup file. Problem is, I can't remember if my backup included both data sets I had. Is there an easy way to tell in the GEDCOM file if the data is from two data sets or not?

Thanks Jim.

Has anyone else noticed that even if you UNcheck "Ask next time" when asked if you want external or internal it still asks you?

Thanks Virginia, but you referenced this topic.
I did a search before posting, but nothing returned. I'll try again with some different keywords.

How do you folks cite a source that you contact regularly, via email for instance? Do you create multiple "interview" source entries, one for each email? Or just one source entry for that person and cite it referencing a specific email?
This is my biggest challenge right now, learning to document all these different things.

Thanks a lot, Kevin... got it.Need to do a couple of testing now and will get back to you directly.
GEDCOM and i.e. Address are in different "Tag Groups" ==> Address in Address and GEDCOM in Other Events - so you won't see both listed when you click on the Tag type button from Tag Entry screen.
John Cardinal's TMG Utility program "normally" does such things but in your special case please be very, very careful if you would like to test it because not only Address tags are affected but some others as well. So i.e. saying "change GEDCOM tag to Address tag" would only mix up your data even more than they already are.
Thanks Vera, I'll make the changes manually.
Aloha,
Kevin

I'll try and get this to you today. I've added a good bit of info since, I'll re-run the maintenance and see if it does it to my new records.Email sent!
I have another related question as well. Those that show GEDCOM, how can I change it back to Address? If I click 'tag type' in the entry, Address isn't listed.

Hi, Kevin,Thanks for the two files you provided.
I carefully checked them (entry by entry) and they are also totally OK.
That is really very strange and obscure. I've never seen this happen before.
I would like to look at your project and need a backup of a part of it. For details how to do that please see my email sent directly to you.

You're welcome, Kevin. The screenshots you kindly provided look totally OK. Absolutely no anomalies.
You're using a custom language, right?
No custom language
So where do you see the "strange" GEDCOM label instead of i.e. "Address"?Only the Tag Entry screen (as visible from the previous screenshot you already provided), on the Details screen for a person as well and / or anywhere else?
On some of my entries, it's almost as if the software pulled out memo's from certain tags (birth for example) and address tags and made them their own GEDCOM tags. Maybe I'm entering them in wrong, but I don't see how.
When you go to the folder where your project is stored you'll find a table named xxx_t.dbf and another table named xxx_t.fpt.Please just make a copy of these two tables (nothing else please) and sent them to me - Click here!
Done...

Kevin, just in case running maintenance tools again doesn't help... could you then please post the following two screenshots of the Tag Type Definition screen (Tools > Master Tag Type List > highlight "wrong labeled" tag i.e. Address > click "Edit")
1) Tab "General"
2) Tab "Other"
of one of those tags which now shows "GEDCOM" instead of Address etc. ?
Here you go, thanks.

A list of fixes is in the file 'Last VFI.log' in your project folder. I had a similar number of errors reported the first time I ran VFI in v6.12. I believe in this instance it was routine housekeeping in the internal data tables, not problems in our data.Have you tried running the maintenance options again? The most effective order is Optimize - VFI - Optimize, repeating that sequence until no more errors are reported. Optimize (which includes Reindex) has the effect of cleaning up after VFI. Rebooting your computer may also help.
Virginia
Thanks for the reply, Virginia. This seems to be the bulk of the errors:
2007.02.18, 13:15:40 >17% Checking names...
2007.02.18, 13:15:40 >Fixed empty date in name table - 154
I'll try running things again as you suggested.
Thanks,
Kevin

I decided to run the maintenance options on my database today. I ran each option. After the integrity checker was completed it said it fixed 155 possible errors. Where do I find what it fixed?
Also, I now have several tag types which say GEDCOM instead of what they used to be - Address, etc. What causes this?

Rightclick while in the Detail window and see if any of the filters on the rightclick menu are checked. Occasionally this seems to happen inadvertently. The red 'filter' will also appear when the user is in Beginner mode. In that case, the filter will be for non-witnessed events - since that mode does not include the witness feature.Virginia
Yep, that was it! Thanks Virginia.

I just noticed when opening my project that the "filtered" column heading in the Details window is colored red. I don't remember if this was the way it has always been, and I don't recall filtering anything. Is this the normal color?

Is there a more suitable source type to use for Draft Registration card information other than "Military Record"? Or should I just create a new source type of "Military - Draft Reg." ? Opinions?

I envy you folks that have the 1800's photos. I doubt I'll ever get to see a picture of most of my ancestors.

Awesome! Thanks

Is there a way to print a full chart starting from some focus person? What I mean is, most of the reports show direct lineage - parents, grandparents, great grandparents, etc. I want to see a graph of parents - their siblings, grandparents - their siblings, etc., etc. I know it can get HUGE, but I'd still like to see it.

What exhibit import option would you choose to import a PDF file? I'm scanning official records (birth, death, etc.) in as PDF files.

Thanks John, I appreciate the reply. Your response is pretty much what I was thinking as well. Sometimes I just need to bounce the ideas in my brain off someone else for clarity.

Thanks Ken!
And might I add I'm the newest paid owner of TMG v6.
After trying it out again I quickly realized how robust it is, and also how much it's making me think when entering info, which makes me enter more info that will come in handy! The other software I was using didn't really do that.

Whenever you add a tag, there's a "date" field. Is this the date the tag was added, or the date the event occurred? See, stupid question.
What made me think of it was the SSN tag. Hmm, date for SSN - date added? Blank? Made me think - should all my Marriage/Divorce tags be changed?

I'm so far beyond that point now. LOL
Now it's a matter of trying to recover all of my data by installing TMG in the VM and copying the folder structure off the windows drive to my virtual machine.
Lesson to all - check/test your backups!
