Backup problem: error or annoyance?
charleslmayfield replied to djiles's topic in Older Products and Versions
Thanks all for your help. I think I have solved the problem, though the exact interfering program is not yet known. However, after a Clean Boot, both TMG6 and TMG7 backups run to full completion without error. Now, I need to turn things back on and see if I can determine the culprit that was causing my problem. Again, Thanks Chuck Mayfield -
Backup problem: error or annoyance?

Thanks, Virginia. As far as I can tell, both computers have the same file and directory structure for TMGv7 program and data files. I have tried to backup the program on my C: drive to various places without success: A network drive that worked since 2006, E:\; C:\; c:\Doc...\The Master Genealogist v7\Backups\ Chuck PS. It will work to all three locations if I check only Program data files -

Thanks Joan, I just did a backup of ...\my documents\The Master Genealogist v7 to a network drive. The full backup took 6-7 minutes. Hopefully, future differenial backups will be quicker. I am still worried that I am out of the main stream. Question: I have not yet converted all my TMG6 projects to TMG7. How can I do that, given that I can not do a full backup with V6? Question: Acronis is on the same disk drive with TMG7. Given that the most likely failure that would result in loss of data is a disk drive failure, how do you propose that I will be able to restore my data after such a failure? What specific steps should I take to ensure the ability to recover from a catastrophic disk failure.???? Chuck -

But I have been trying to backup to the C: drive. As I said before, if I uncheck everything except Project data files, the backup completes successfully. Is it possible to make that error message give a hint about what the problem is? TMG writes absolutely nothing to either log filename you gave me before. I hate to resort to backing up with 7zip or Acronis because both methods take so long...I see wits' end ..... Chuck -

I looked at your file. Thanks for it. However, I see no files that are obviously in ZIP format. The error that TMG reports (but does not put into a LOG file that I can find) mentions a ZIP file: "The Master Genealogist - Input file read failure - This error occurs when a file read operation is performed on a ZIP file that is locked or restricted by another process." Which TMG7 files are stored in ZIP format? -

Thanks, Virginia. I will look at your tmg7.pdf file. I found today that if I uncheck everything but project data files, the backup completes OK. Checking any of the following along with project data files; External exhibits, Accents, Filters; results in failure of the backup. I had shared the TMG7 folder in My Documents on my local LAN, but logged out from them at my other computer. Still the backup does not work. I suspect a WinXP file lock problem, but can not discover enough info to even tell by looking in directories whether a file is locked or not locked by another process. back in the win3.1 days, Word would leave a file when it crashed, indicating that the document was open, even when it crashed. I assume that sort of thing would be a used to indicate that there is a lock, but there seems to be no such file here. -

I copied all the files from ...my documents\the master genealogist vy\ to an equivalent directory on another computer after installing v7 there and the backup works ok on that computer. Based on that, I suspect that the problem is NOT INCLUDED in the data directories, but in the program directories. What is backed up from the program directories? and why? Regards, Chuck Mayfield -

Well, yes, Virginia. I tried to make a backup to C:\, and as I said, no sqz file is created. Chuck -

I just tried another v7 backup. Same result. It looked to me like the backup completed, because both progress bars seemed to show 100%, but then the error popped up. Again, no SQZ file was written. Also, nothing was written to either of the suggested log files. -

The problem I reported in 2006, post#5 above is back, and the same exact error messages are reported. I now have the same exact problem with both TMG6 and TMG7 (different projects). I tried changing the backup location to C:\ where there is 3.6GB free space. When I try to backup to c:\, I get the following error message: "The Master Genealogist - Input file read failure - This error occurs when a file read operation is performed on a ZIP file that is locked or restricted by another process." I click OK then see the following: "Errors occurred during backup. Output file write failure, possible disk full" And no sqz file is written. In my project GWM__.PJC I only have one dataset. I tried to Add--wife to an individual and got "It is not possible to add person to an empty project. Backup problem: error or annoyance?
charleslmayfield replied to djiles's topic in Older Products and Versions
OK. I have no idea why, but I tried to create a new project and got an error that put TMG into Repair Mode. With TMG operating in Repair Mode, I then opened the project that would not back up. It took a long time to load with lots of disk thrashing, but now the backup function seems to work, based on a subset of three attempts. I have no idea at all why, but so far I am happy with the results. Go figger! -
Backup problem: error or annoyance?
charleslmayfield replied to djiles's topic in Older Products and Versions
For some time I have not been able to backup my TMG program to USB drives or Network drives. Then to make matters worse, I recently had to restore my whole computer from the restore disk. Therefore I have lost a lot of _new_ _data_ and exhibits because I had poor backups. When I try to backup to anywhere, I get the following error message: "The Master Genealogist - Input file read failure - This error occurs when a file read operation is performed on a ZIP file that is locked or restricted by another process." I click OK then see the following: "Errors occurred during backup. Output file write failure, possible disk full" And no sqz file is written. I have not been able to find a ZIP file anywhere in the TMG directory or its subdirectories.
