  1. Adding images in TMG6 in WinVista

This thread may be of interest? http://www.whollygenes.com/forums201/index...&hl=exhibit I just made the switch too. The drag and drop adding new exhibits isn't working for me either (if I've read you correctly that that isn't working). [edit] oops, just tried Shirley's suggestion and it worked fine!! :-) The pdf file (link in a previous response by someone) on getting TMG to work in Vista includes instructions on getting old windows help files to work too.
  2. I am not so worried about file sizes, I'm only linking in very small jpg photos for each person at this point. My main problem with these right now is not linking them into TMG but preventing windows vista explorer from crashing because it doesn't seem to like any jpgs I've produced with photoshop or paint (crashes if more than 2 of these in a folder being viewed). This is the only problem I've had with the OS but it is quite a pain when working with photos for genealogy. Saving as tifs is fine so I'm doing that where possible. Anyway, have taken your point about a single folder, will consider it for future reorganizations if/when this explorer issue ever gets sorted out.
  3. Thanks Jim, that seems to be fixing it. Just to add to your method above, in case anyone else runs across this problem - the program does not go into subfolders so you need to select every single subfolder individually. A bit of a pain, maybe I'll suggest this be changed for future editions. I'll give TMG Utility a try for it too though and update my comment here, maybe it is a bit more user friendly?
  4. Hi, A month ago my much beloved laptop with XP died, so I was forced to upgrade to Vista a bit earlier than desired (I was waiting for SP1 but c'est la vie). I'm loving the new computer, but it's brought up a little TMG issue that I suspected would be a problem for me - transferring exhibits. Maybe there is a simple way around this someone can point me at? I've read and followed the instructions for running TMG on Vista, and moved everything over (http://www.whollygenes.com/forums201/index.php?showtopic=7462), it seems to be working fine. When I open up my TMG file, the exhibits are still there as thumbnails, but if I double click on the image in the exhibits window it tells me "File e:\MyDocuments\[my file path] not found, there is thumbnail 00019.jpg only". The path to my exhibits folder is the same on my new computer as on the old one, so I'm not sure what the hold up is. I've only bothered with small jpgs of individuals at this point, so not much is lost, but I'd love to reconnect them to their source folder. Any suggestions? -Joyce
  5. Hi, I was wondering if anyone could give me suggestions about how to get the kind of Family Group Sheet I'm looking for. I really like the style of FGS ancestry has made available on their site: http://www.ancestry.co.uk/trees/charts/familysheet.aspx I like its compactness and detail in comparison with the TMG FGS reports. I would like to find a way to print this style of FGS out from TMG or if need be other software. I've gotten something fairly close by removing the photos and reducing the font size, but I quite like how the reports are divided up and labelled, so I can quickly see what's missing (cause of death, etc), and as far as I know I can't do this in TMG. Is there some way to create out own template for the non-VCF reports? If not, can anyone recommend a program that has this style of report already prepared? As an aside, it would be interesting to see what they have planned for future editions, particularly for reports. Am I missing something or do they have a place where they post plans for future upgrades? Best Regards, Joyce
  6. Exhibits

Hi, I was just having the same problem, I've managed to figure it out. Open the main exhibits window for the person of interest, add the photo you want by dragging it into the window (if you haven't already), right click on the photo you want to be the primary and select "properties" from the drop down menu. in the bottom left corner of the "general" tab there is a box for primary that you can select.
  7. excellent thread! I have a few different lists of to-bring items, depending on where I'm going. First thing: I check the website for the archive, library etc to see if they have policies on paper, pencils etc and to double check their hours. So, for the places I regularly go: 1. Lancashire records office -1 gbp coin (for locker) -railcard (cheaper train travel :-)) -user registration card :-) for ***first visit would need proof of where your postal address is, this is very common for british archives*** -my genealogy notebooks (about 5x5 inches each, indexed for previous visits) -printouts of my TMG and other to-do lists, and lists of items I've gotton before so I don't duplicate. Includes list of items that need to be ordered from the archives in order of importance, since they only deliver 3 documents at a time. -phone numbers of local collaborators -computer and power cord (they have wireless, yay!) -mechanical pencils -camera (they charge for use, so I bring it just in case there is something I desperately want a copy of that cannot be photocopied) -credit card and at least 10 gbp cash (they allow payment for photocopy tokens with credit card, and I get loads of photocopies they make after I've left, so we just total at the end of the day and I make one payment on the card) -sweater/jumper (can't bring in a coat but can wear in clothing. it's not usually cold though) -lunch (it's not close to places to eat) and water For items I order up, I generally take a few key notes then order a photocopy, which they post a few days afterward to me. All OPR I take notes in my notebook and transfer later to TMG, I often refer back to the notebooks later so this system works for me. A good thing to note for anyone visiting uk archives (at least the LRO) from overseas - photocopies probably can't be provided on the same day, so they'll probably need to post it to you back home! 2. The Harris library in Preston or Manchester Public library they don't seem to complain if I take photos, so I generally look at microfilm/fiche and photograph anything that interests me with my digital camera. I also bring the notebooks, computer, and lots of change since if photocopies are required they don't take credit card. The usual lists, pen/pencil etc. 3. graveyards, etc. (I don't do this often so I'm not an expert) -GSP and extra batteries -map -camera and extra batteria -the ubiquitous notebook, pens, pencils -mobile phone -umbrella? :-)
  8. Multiple Links to a Single Exhibit

Thanks for the suggestion John, I've tried linking a photo to an event and it seems to work well. I've prepared a new tag called "Event-Photo", with the following code for the principle and witnesses (it probably needs work, especially when I have to add a second principle, but just as an example) Principle: This photo of [P1] <with [WO]> was taken <[D]> <[L]>. [M] Witness(es): This photo of [P1] with [W] <, [WO]> was taken <[D]> <[L]>. [M] One other thing - I tried to add a photo that I'd tagged with fototagger (http://fototagger.com) into my exhibits, however the tags don't show up. Any chance the next version of TMG could recognize Foto markup language? Best Regards, Joyce
  9. Filtering on Sources

Thanks Terry, this works like a charm!
  10. Hello, Apologies if this topic has already been covered elsewhere, I've tried searching the forums and help file but wasn't able to find any answers on this topic so here I go! I'd like to add a tag for a family moving from one part of the country to another (for example: moving from one community to another in the the same county; moving across the country, etc). It's not strictly an emmigration/immigration event since they are in the same country, though that's the tag I'm using for now as a placemarker. Obviously this comes up pretty often for a lot of families so I'd like to have a tag or treatment for it that allows me to put my guestimate of when a move happened into TMG. Am I missing an obvious tag I should be using, or should I make a new one? If the latter, if anyone has sentence structures they'd like to share with a newbie I'd be most grateful! :-) Best Regards, Joyce (I'm using TMG version 6 gold for the UK in case that makes any difference)
