  1. All you have to do is download the the installation file to one of your computers, copy the file to CD or USB drive and install on the other computer. The file is always available as the 30 Day Free Trial from the Wholly Genes Website. Your v7 serial number removes the trial attributes.

I have TMG 6.09 and would like to upgrade. I have a desktop and a Notebook that I take with me for research. Can I do the download only and get it on both computers or do I have to buy the cd?

  2. From the The Master Genealogist Electronic Users Guide Download Site:

"Note that the Help file has been extensively updated but the Users Guide contains only the core features of TMG and has not changed with the release of TMG v7."

This is also true for the printed version.

Terry Reigel has released a new set of pages about TMG 7 on his website: tmg.reigelridge.com/version7.htm

Has the printed manual been revised? If so I'm inclined to buy the full version rather than the upgrade.

  3. I have over 18,000 people in my database and when I travel outside the state going to cemteries and etc., it's hard to lug a laptop around... sometimes alot of walking up mountains and such and it's nice to have my info with me and would be nice to have something long lasting in the battery department and capable to input info into.

The toolbox for cemetery research includes your data on either a PALM or Pocket PC for reference only, a camera (spare batteries & memory card), paper & pencils, a GPS and maybe some stonecutter's copy paper for those impossible to read stones. Don't try and do any data entry into your PDA! Don't forget your bug spray!

Enter the results of your field trip in the comfort of your home (or hotel) where you have the time to analyze the data with a nice hot chocolate (or other drink of choice.)

  4. I see that this behavior is happening on any project you open, therefore I suggest you do a clean install of TMG.

    CLEAN INSTALL DIRECTIONS:

Have the Serial Number for The Master Genealogist email available.

    Backup All (project & customizations)

Copy and Paste your Project and Pics folders to a safe place (Desktop or other folder).

Use Windows Add/Remove programs to remove The Master Genealogist (for all users)

Delete the remaining The Master Genealogist folder from the Program Files folder

Turn off and restart your computer.

Disable all virus software before reinstalling.

For TMG 6, use your CD or go to www.whollygenes.com and download the 30-Day Trial version. Unlock it for the full version. The 30-Day Trial version is always the latest setup file.

Install TMG and update if necessary.

Return the data folders and Restore customizations from your backup.

  5. I have not been able to figure out a successful way to easily synchronize two machines so that I can input data to either machine at any time and have them synchronize the data to the latest and greatest.

I use a 80 gig USB hard drive to keep my data and external exhibits. I just move the drive between computers and always have the correct project. Backups are to each computers hard drive, giving me backups on at least 2 computers

  6. This won't answer your question but learning to type on manual typewriters and early seletronic IBMs, I understand where you're coming from wanting the two spaces between sentences. The Chicago Manual of Style now says:

2.12: Line spacing and word spacing

... A single character space, not two spaces, should be left after periods at the ends

of sentences (both in manuscript and in final, published form) and after ...

  7. I changed the name of some TMG files not using the program feature and now the software does not recognize them as proper files. What do you suggest to get the TMG program to recognize them?

If you have a current backup of your project, just use Restore from the Welcome Window and restore your project.

If you do not have a current backup, use Windows Explorer and carefully change the file names back to what they were. A TMG project has about 80 files that all begin with the Project name. Note that the .pjc file has two underscores in the file name.

If you contine to have problems, contact Tech Support. Dorothy or Phil will help you.

  8. With the old versions of TMG 4 & 5 the Subject,Spouse & No known children blocks would print out in color with Vers 6.09 gold edition they are all in grey scale shade.I have been into preferences & played around with the colors,I can do it for Box Charts but not FGS. is there an easy way to do this or is it a program preset thing,Thank you Bill from Australia

The FGS shading has alway grey scale. However, going back to the tmg-l archives, Virginia Blakelock wrote:

Subject: Re: [TMG] Family Group Sheet

There is presently no option within tmg5 to do this, but if you are

comfortable working with files, Windows Explorer, and Windows Paint program there is a

workaround which I used to change the gray color (and make new colors) . I

have only done this for the plain FGS without images. It involves changing

the color of three .bmp files in the \rrw folder in your tmg5 installation:

    shadesf1.bmp,

    shadesf2.bmp,

    shadesf3.bmp.

There are other shade*.bmp files with very similar names - only slightly

different suffixes to 'shade', so it is important to check them carefully.

    Using Windows Explorer:

    1. Make a new folder called Colors - outside of your tmg5 installation

folder - with subfolders Gray and LightGray. Now go to your tmg installation

folder and the \rrw subfolder. Find the 3 files above and _copy_ them to the Gray

folder and also to the LightGray folder.. The Gray folder will hold your

backup copies of the 3 files and those files will not be altered.

    2. Go to the LightGray folder. Open each .bmp in turn and lighten the

color, using Windows Paint or any paint program, making all 3 of them the same

light color. You can make them a very light gray or you can try white. You can

change the _color_ but must retain the current _name_ of the .bmp file. Do not

change that. The only way you will know which .bmp file (default Gray or new

LightGray) is active in tmg5 is by the creation dates of the .bmp files.

    3. Copy the 3 new LightGray .bmp files to the \rrw folder in your tmg5

installation, overwriting the present .bmp files of the same name. If you want to

return to the default darker gray, just copy those Gray files back to tmg,

    overwriting the lighter .bmp's.

That will give you lighter gray boxes in the plain FGS report, and is all you

need to do. If you want to get fancier, see below.

I have automated this process, opening tmg5 with different colored boxes in

plain FGS rpts, by using command lines in another file manager (DOpus). I

haven't figured out how to do this in WinXP, although I assume it involves using

the Command Prompt. My DOpus command line Copies the contents of a specific

Color folder to the \rrw folder and then opens TMG5 with that color selected.

Presently I have 4 colors for 4 different family lines, so the FGS boxes are

color coordinated for those 4 projects. Seems like there should be a way to

insert a command line using Copy File into the Windows Shortcut Properties, but

nothing I've tried works. Here's my DOpus command line for Yellow in case

anyone can share with us a way to do something similar in WindowsXP - and ideally

incorporate it into the Shortcut Properties Target:

    copy FILE="C:\AFiles\Colors\Yellow\*.bmp" TO="C:\TMG5\rrw"

    cd C:\TMG5

    C:\TMG5\tmg.exe "%1"

  9. OK, dumb move but somehow I managed to get a second marriage added to one of my ancestors without his benefiting from the second bride.

How do I remove the marriage? When I go to the Person tab, there is no tag for the second marriage for either the husband or the alleged wife, only the correct marriage tag for the first wife. However, the marriages do show up on the Family and Tree tabs. I'm puzzled!

Check the children to see if both parents are listed as primary. When all the children have the correct primary parents the additional marriage will vanish.

  10. I downloaded v6 for a 30 day trial and I find that I am totally lost when I try to create any kind of report. I have been using v4 since it first came out and the terms for the reports in v6 are entirely different. What has happened to Genealogy Report (Register) and Genealogy Report (Modified Register)? It seems to me a simple program has been made difficult. I've tried the Help file but I guess I'm too dense to get it.

Both the Genealogy Report (Register) and Genealogy Report (Modified Register) are now in Report > Journal.

  11. My TMG database is probably not unlike many users'... I have nearly one-thousand people with the same Surname and I have several hundred people with the same Given Names in one large project.

When I want to select a person, I most often go to the Picklist of People. If the "Sort By" is set for "Surname" and I enter SMITH (or any common name in my database, for that matter), I get the first of a nearly one-thousand SMITHs. If the "Sort By" is set by "Given Name" and enter JOHN (or other common given name), I get the first of several hundred JOHNs. Whichever sort parameter I choose, I still must scroll through all of the SMITHs - or all of the JOHNs - to get who I want to pick. - - I realize that there are several ways to search for individuals in TMG - Project Explorer, et al. - and they work fine, but for me, they are a bit too time consuming. I want something faster.

I would really like to be able to go directly to the first SMITH, JOHN (not SMITH, ABE or ABBOT, JOHN) on the Picklist of People screen and pick from the dozen or so JOHN SMITHs that would be in front of me...

I propose creating TWO search fields on the Picklist of People screen - one for Surname (where I could enter SMITH) and one for Given Name (where I could enter JOHN) - with a button that would execute the search on command with a click. For me, this would be a big improvement. - - Perhaps this could be an option to the current style of search.

I would like to see some comments by others about this proposal. Please post your thour thoughts. Thanks!

    Earl

Just hit F2 twice. Then type Smith, John in the search box and go straight to the first John Smith. This method will not begin searching until you hit enter (or click ok).
