  1. Embedded citations in sub data set of a data set

Terry, I'm glad you have replicated the problem when using the procedure I used. I had spent a number of days unsuccessfully trying and retrying to make in TMG an error free subset of my data with no errors with embedded citations. I was at a point of exasperation. Hopefully TMG can now rectify the problem in one of the next updates as a result of you bringing this problem to their attention. I appreciate the time you have given to working on this task and observing a pattern in the problem. In the meantime, I have followed your advice in creating a flag, and using that flag in Second Site to control who is included. I had not contemplated using this procedure before until you made the suggestion, as I had not really fully understood the precise process until you wrote that Second Site itself can control who is included using flags. I have now been able to produce an error free sub data set with Second Site and can at least send a CD of this data to members in it that can be opened up by them on Internet Explorer. Many thanks, Ian.
  2. Embedded citations in sub data set of a data set

Terry, I am forwarding the following as requested:- I am using TMG v6.12. I created my sub data as a focus group by using the "Add Individual" and "Add Others" procedure. Then in the "Data Set Manager", I added a new data set name and ticked all six boxes initialising this new data set by copying data types from my original data set before clicking “OK”. After closing the "Data Set Manager", I went to "Add" and clicked "Copy Person(s)". On the "Copy Person" window, I indicated that I wanted "Copy the people in the current Focus Group" and highlighted the name of the new data set. In the "Data Types to Include" component, I left ticked all seven boxes under "Copy will include". I then clicked "OK" and then completed the process by clicking "Yes" on the window "Confirmation Required". It was not apparent that there were any errors until I converted the new data set to “Second Site”. “Second Site” showed up five errors and all were a result of TMG creating four digit source numbers where TMG did not automatically put in the original source numbers or alternative new numbers connected to sources. (There were only 225 different sources in the original data set.) The following are some observations I have made:- In the sources list of this newly created subset, TMG lists all the sources and corresponding source numbers that were in the much larger original data set, but of course each number is preceded by the new number of the new data set. However, in the new data set, TMG repeats many of these same sources a second time if these sources are in embedded citations by giving them new source numbers. And yet at other times, TMG gives the source in an embedded citation the initial number instead of creating a new number corresponding to the source. I could not discover any reason for this nor could I work out why four digit source numbers were sometimes created that were not connected to any source. As you say, there might be a bug in the program, and if this is so, I am at least comforted in knowing that I am not inadvertently creating the problem through using a wrong procedure. I can only hope that in all cases where new numbers are created by TMG in embedded citations that they actually refer to the correct sources! Thanks for your help. Ian.
  3. My problem occur with some of the source numbers that are automatically created in the embedded citations in a sub data set created from my existing data set. The new source numbers that are automatically created in the memos of the sub data set should refer to the same sources that are under different numbers in the memos of the original data set. This change of numbers works effectively when citations have not been created as embedded citations in the memos, but the problem occurs sometimes with embedded citations in the sub data set. Errors sometime occur when the embedded citation numbers that are automatically created in the memo of the sub data set remain the same as the numbers in the in the embedded citations in the memos of the original data set and as a consequence either refer to the wrong source titles or sometimes that number does not even exist in the list of source numbers in the sub data set. Can someone suggest a possible cause of my problem?
