  1. I've been using TMG version 8.08 successfully since it came out. I have been working in the program for the last few days with no problem. I keep my data files in a dropbox folder. This morning I am having problems. I went to open my software and I got the following error: "An error happened when opening the data tables. 2012_ND.dbf not found." Now when I go to open the software I get the message: "Repair mode has been activated. The application will operate somewhat more slowly as it validates each file that it is opened. Repair mode will be off again the next time you that you run the application". It will open to the splash screen but the 'Open last project" is greyed out. I navigate to the 2012 data set in Dropbox and it starts to open, I get the same error I've gotten for a long time about using the default exhibit folder and then I get the 2012_ND.dbf error. Any advice would be appreciated. Rebecca A. Sonnier
  2. I have been fighting with the exact same problem of parents not showing up on the Journal report for some people but showing up for others. I am not at home right now but I am sure Paul's suggestion will solve my problem. Thanks so much for this information. The support on these boards is really wonderful!
  3. Index for Journal Report in Word

Well, the second link solved the whole problem!!! You cannot put it AFTER the endnotes...it simply has to come before. Thank you so much Virginia...it was driving me nuts R.A. Sonnier
  4. I am having trouble creating an index for a journal report that has been printed to a Word 2000 or greater file. If there is an article describing how to do this please let me know and I'll go read it. I haven't been able to find it on Terry's site nor have a found a previous thread where this was discussed. I am sending a journal report to Word. I am telling it to include an index on names. When I open the report in Word and click on the symbol to show hidden codes, I can see that the proper index codes are there. In Word, I then go to Insert - Reference - Index and Tables. I choose an index format per the instructions in the help file in Word. My problem occurs at this point...the "OK" button is grayed out. I have tested this in a non-TMG document to make sure I understand the steps. It works fine. I then tested my TMG produced document and deleted one of the hidden indexing marks and put one in manually (just like I did on my non-TMG doc). It did not work. What am I doing wrong? Thanks for any guidance. R.A. Sonnier
  5. Betty Frain's Census

but isn't that what Betty is suggesting that you do? Change it on the tag? Rebecca :-)
  6. Betty Frain's Census

Please correct me if I'm wrong but here is my understanding of what will happen in Betty's instructions: I set up a name tag for the 1910 census. I then go to the 1910 census event and change the sentence structure for a role in the 1910 census (for example head of household) to use the new name tag I created. Now when I print out a journal report, it will print the head of households name as "Walter L. Penn (given age 41)". If this is correct, what happens to the other 20,000 people in my data base when I print this 1910 census entry? Since it is looking for my new name tag in this sentence and they don't have that name tag..what will it print? A blank? Unknown? I really, really like her suggestions but I sure don't want to redo every tag in my database. Please advise. RA Sonnier
  7. Carol, it did the exact same thing to me...exactly as you described. It started happening out of the blue...did it for a couple of days...and then stopped. All within the last two weeks. Strange but I'm very glad it stopped.
  8. Family View Problem

Looking at Terry's Tips gave me lots of ideas. I'll go through your suggestion and give that a try too. I haven't been very "bold" when it comes to changing my view choices. I've used the program for several years but basically have done straight data entry from the detail screen. I am just now starting to explore some of the options available to me. I end up more and more impressed with the software as I explore. As you can tell from this thread, I've gotten out the books and done some reading to get more familiar with the choices. Unfortunately, it seems I have an older book. I'll try to stick with Terry's tips to focus on Version 6 options.
  9. Family View Problem

oh wow! you are exactly right...title page says version 4.x. Well, that clears up that question but I did kinda like that view. Thanks so much for the quick answers.
  10. Family View Problem

yes, what you describe is exactly what I see. I'm going to try to attach a scan of the view described in the Getting Started Manual so you can see what I'm talking about. I've never attached a file to a post before so please forgive me if this doesn't work right. I'd like you to be able to see what I was trying to describe. RAS Family_View.pdf
  11. My understanding of the family view is that it should resemble a family group sheet. I find an example on the TMG Getting Started Guide on page 14. My family view does not look like this. It resembles a pedigree chart. Please be clear, I am not confusing Family view with Tree view. The tree view correctly looks like a pedigree chart for me....but so does the family view. On family view I see no children. I see the husband and wife and a "tree" type link to each of their parents and that is it. I'm sure this is something I did in the past and now can't remember how to undo it. Question: How do I get my family view screen back to the original setting? Thanks! RAS
  12. Deleting the Research Log

Thank you so much...that is EXACTLY what I needed to know! Trust me I will do this VERY carefully! One question - What exactly will the reindex accomplish? Is there any chance that it would renumber the people in my database? I have written those numbers on hardcopy research materials and although I could live with them changing I'd rather have them remain the same. Again, thanks for the quick response... RAS
  13. Is there a way to completely delete the Research Log and start over? Long ago an import from another software filled my research log with 3400 items. I saw in a previous post that doing the import over was the easiest way to fix this problem but that is not an option since I have done years of work since then. I just never used the Research Log. Deleting 3400 tasks by hand is going to be a problem. Perhaps there is a file that can be deleted (after a complete backup of course)? Does anyone have a solution? Thanks RAS
