  1. While you were posting, I was demonstrating the problem to my husband. We discovered that on people with very large amount of data, the scroll bar was there. What we think is happening is, indeed, a window sizing problem. I am running my virtual machine on a totally separate display set to full screen and in coherence mode so that I can work on the Apple desktop for internet/email purposes at the same time as I'm working in TMG on the Windows desktop.

I can't change Preferences to Use the TMG 5/6 method of window resizing because the "box" can't be completely displayed. I can see the tops of the buttons, but not the titles. I've looked through my manual/ Hoffman's book, downloaded Riegel tips, but can't find a "picture" of the placement of these buttons so I can try to click on the right one - Apply.

I think you're right, but please tell me which of the four buttons is the Apply button . . . I know I should remember the order, but for the life of me I can't!

  2. I have no scroll bar on the individual Person Details Window (also none on the sibling or child windows, but I've never really needed a scroll bar there) on the TMG screen which displays when I open my project.

I have NO way to move down the screen on people with multiple tag events. I am running Snow Leopard 10.6.2 and Parallels 5.0.9220 (Revision 535995, 19 Nov 2009).

When I changed the layout from my customized layout to Standard, the scroll bar was briefly visible, but then replaced with the standard (and annoying to me) layout minus any scroll bar.

The problems I had with using an enlarged font size on WordPerfect occurred several years ago when I was still using a PC. I haven't tried to run the report that gave me past problems now that I'm using WP in a virtual machine.

  3. Initially, I thought TMG v7.04 was working perfectly on a Windows XP Pro guest virtual machine running via Parallels on an Apple Mac Mini. However, once I began to work, I realized my scroll bar was no longer available in my customized layout. On the advice of TMG tech support, I opened the Standard Layout where the scroll bar still wasn't available. I was therefore advised to post on the forum in hope that someone else running on an Apple might know what's wrong.

I've never had this problem before. There is no way I can move down my individual Person Details window . . . obviously not via the missing scroll bar, but also not using the down arrow or page down keys either. This makes it impossible to work on anybody.

I have Windows Desktop Appearance sent to Large fonts because I have a vision problem. I know that this has caused a problem with WordPerfect in the past, but I was using Large Fonts on the desktop display prior to having set up a Windows guest virtual machine on the new Apple after the death of my former PC's motherboard. TMG never objected to Large Font before now.

I'm really dead in the water. Does anybody have a fix or suggestion?

  4. As the result of an unexpected motherboard failure in a relatively new computer, I made the switch from a PC to a Mac Mini. My 25 years of PC operating system experience did not lead me to expect the incredible ease with which set up was accomplished between the Mac and my existing hardware and broadband internet connection. I bought Parallels 4.0, subsequently upgraded to 5.0, and transferred my entire Windows XP Pro computer into the Mac with more ease than I would've imagined. The only problem I had was getting Parallels Tools installed so I could run a Windows XP desktop on my second display while running Mac's Snow Leopard on my main display. However, this was resolved with help from Tech Support. I use the Mac for all email and internet research work. I use XP Pro to run WordPerfect, Paradox (database), Quattro Pro (spreadsheet), Microsoft's OneNote 2007, an old calendar program I like, and, most importantly, TMG. What amazed me was that a flatbed scanner, for which no Mac driver exists, runs perfectly under Windows XP - the same way it did when it was connected to my old PC.

So far, I've not had any problems running TMG v7. WordPerfect has performed flawlessly, as well. The only issue has been a delay in response when I transfer WordPerfect text into OneNote 2007 (which I use to hold nearly ten years of notes on genealogy, as well as notes taken from genealogical books/thesis/dissertations). I don't consider this a major problem. I'm willing to live with a little slowdown because of OneNote's incredible search ability.

I'm posting this so others will know that TMG v7 will run on the Mac. I will be interested to learn if TMG v8 is compatible with XP Pro because I have no intention of upgrading my Windows operating system. After experiencing the Mac, nothing could induce me to return to a Windows PC and its OS problems!

  5. I learned yesterday that I can't use split CDs within embedded citations. I'd used them where I had conflicting data in census tags. No problem, I thought. Let's say I have two men enumerated who could be the one in question. I put the most likely candidate under the main census tag and set an arbitrary sort date. I next created a new Note tag which contained census data on the other likely candidate with its own separate (and different) citation detail. In one case there were three men, so I ended up with three separate tags (1 census and 2 Note tags) - each sorted sequentially.

However, when I had a chance to run test reports this morning, I discovered that, although the citation detail was different for each tag, because the basic source number was the same, the footnote in the second (or third) sentence was an Ibid.

I thought there was a way to specific that citation detail had to be exactly the same for Ibid. to be used. Is this capability limited to specific reports because I haven't found any? Did I imagine this capability? I know I could disable Ibid, but that would create many more lines of footnotes than I want in a report.

Jim, or anybody, what am I missing here?

  6. I went to John Cardinal's utility immediately after posting my reply (before reading your response) and ran it. Because I'd already fixed two tags, I didn't want to automatically run the search and replace program which might have entered double escape characters on the fixed tags. Instead I ran search and replace to create a log file which I saved to word processing, printed, and used as a go-by. There were 28 instances that required escape characters on 14 different individuals, but most were on only two men. I've completed the fix. In two cases, the errant } was a typo where I'd meant to hit the ] key. Had I had more } to which to add an escape character, I would've let the utility do the replacing, but this seemed safer. I really love the ability to create a log file (thanks, John, as I've often discovered, your utility is just great).

    Leslie

  7. Okay, I see that I misread the Help section on escape characters. I'd never seen any post that explained v7 was this sensitive and had no reason to expect such serious problems in my large database. I deliberately waited to update to 7 until the fall of 2008, waiting for initial software issues to be resolved.

After loading TMG and running a test, I find that adding the escape character ONLY in front of the right brace characters solves the problem on the Details screen and, I expect, on the output as well. As long as I don't have to add escape characters to all the [ ] brackets found in my memos, I can live with this.

Had I needed to add escape characters to all the square brackets, I would've despaired because there are too many of them in too many memo fields throughout my large database. I was feeling deeply discouraged (and beginning to regret updating to v7 in spite of loving the split CDS and just finishing correcting about 10,500 census citations to utiliize them). Now that I find only the right } are affected, it's not such in insurmountable task. These are used only when trying to reproduce court documents and, consequently, shouldn't be too hard to find.

Thanks for you help in resolving this perplexing issue.

    Leslie

  8. I need to add that I found a copy of a Journal Report on the same individual using basically the same data produced 16 Sep 2007, before I upgraded to version 7, in which absolutely NO data was truncated. No escape characters were used in front of any of the right braces prior to generating this report.

Therefore, my surprise at having difficulties with a report on the same man using the same, albeit updated, data isn't out of line. Prior to this week, I hadn't output anything of significance since upgrading to version 7 last fall. I really like 7.04, but, evidently, it must be more sensitive.

With respect to the fact that one cannot use split CDs within embedded citations, I emailed Terry Reigel (my hero), whose suggestions for split census CDs I'd followed, to suggest he post a warning on his census page about this.

    Leslie

  9. Did you escape the right braces and brackets? (which you must do) ...and test the above memo example?

Please note the following memo field:

    "Moorhead & Watson

    pr me Samuel Watson Colo"

On the Details screen all that shows on the Note line is L91..0..0.

On the jounal report output from this Tag, all I get follows:

    L91..0..0

To cash Paid for ourselves & horses 231..12..6

    L413..12.6

    State of South Carolina

The above William Moorhead and Watson

was imployed by me to take Necesarys to

Sd. prisoners and I Say it before the Honourable Hous for their approbation

    pr me Samuel Watson Colo."

Addinig the escape character before the right braces hasn't helped. There are repeated instances of this, but I don't think I need to fill up this post with them. Clearly you are correct that the braces are causing the problem, but I don't know how else to copy "legal" documents which use them. I use [ ] brackets to enclose my comments and parens as used in the documents. Yesterday, I deleted all the printer codes in these memos in case that was partly to blame so can't append any examples.

I didn't have time to test all this yesterday. I had to re-type everything I could find that hadn't been output in order to get the reports into the mail this morning.

  10. Jim:

There were two separate problems occurring. I posted an example of the easiest one to show which had the split CD embedded footnotes. You've explained that. I may not be happy about it, but it's easy to work around using two separate Note Tags to contain the data on the two different men.

The second problem occurred in much lengthier memo fields and it took a long time to find one short enough to post. There were no "loose" brackets floating around in these memo fields. Only, rarely, right braces, but often the [:TAB:] code had been there.

I have gone through and removed all Tab codes. I have double-checked the right braces (there never were any left braces) and looked for errant ] or ['s of which there were none. I haven't tried to export a another word processing report, but I can tell you from looking at the Details window on TMG that the problem hasn't been fixed. It is only occurring on random Note Tags, but I can tell by looking at the screen, that something is wrong . . . . . . if no text shows up on the Note tag line, that's been a sure sign that the text was not going to be exported.

If I click on the tag, the text is there which is why I can verify that there are no printer codes left or anything else that shouldn't be there. But only a few words, which can occur at the beginning, middle, or end, are being exported.

My routine maintenance is as follows: twice a day, at the least, I Reindex, Optimize, Validate File Integrity, and Backup the Project on which I'm working. If I'm doing really heavy editing or adding a lot of new people, I go through this procedure more frequently. And, I've never merged a Gedcom with my project file.

  11. There are a couple right-braces ("}") in the example above. Are there left-braces in there, too? They would cause a problem: they are the "sensitive text" markers and all text between { and } is suppressed.

No, there are never { left braces. I use them when I'm typing data from legal sources that use right braces in front of legal descriptions.

I've found some memo fields that include the [:TAB:] codes which have exported perfectly. I am beyond puzzled.

  12. You cannot use split memo parts in embedded citations.

This is terrible. The only split citations I use are for census and most are not embedded, but sometimes . . . . .

However, this isn't the MAIN PROBLEM. These are not the memo fields that are truncating. Those do NOT have any split citations at all.

Here is an example of a Note Tag that has a problem:

"for 302 days Duty as adjutant under the command of Colo. Watson from 6 February to 4 Dec 1779 131-00-0

This document, much folded, was next certified by Joseph Howe (paymaster to Col. Watson's Regt.) and also by Wm. Bratton and Fitchett was recompensed for his service and losses in the total amount of L131.

    End of example.

The only thing that shows on the Details screen is Fichet came before me which was absolutely all that was output to word processing. The CD printed out perfectly.

  13. As I went through about 30 problem Tags this morning, I noticed that in some of the ones that truncate memo data, I'd used print control codes to try to separate stuff during output to word processing. The code I was using was [:TAB:]. I've used it in earlier versions, but not only does the control code NOT initiate a Tab Stop, the code itself doesn't print out in word processing files (as it did in earlier versions of TMG). But, this control code seems to be causing data not to show in the Details window and NOT TO OUTPUT to wordprocessing. Only a few words here and there print out.

I've got a real disaster on my hands here, because even after removing every single [:TAB:] code, material iin the memo field still doesn't show up on Details screen as it should. I haven't tried to re-output the file because I've spent too much time painstakingly adding the "lost" data, as well as footnotes, to the word processing file.

I will try your suggestion about List of Events report and see if that helps. However, when TMG gives the option of searching for embedded citations for a List Report, one would think TMG meant it. I assume it tries to do what you're suggesting?

I agree that something is seriously wrong. Here is an example from a report I was working on yesterday:

there are three James Watsons in Pike County. I believe this man to be James Sr who is between the ages of 60 and 70.[CIT:]683:;James Watson Sr||Pike County||Missouri||10||Roll 72, page 258, image 59||;[:CIT] Another James Sr is between 70 and 80.[CIT:]683:;James Watson Sr||Pike County||Missouri||24||Roll 72, page 257, image 57||;[:CIT] James M. Watson is between 30 and 40.

Only the citation for James M. Watson was output and showed up in the word processing file.

I can't provide an example of the truncation because I don't know how to do a screen shot to show the Details screen and I don't think you could tell anything from the scrambled words that were output.

    Leslie

  14. I'm hoping somebody has an answer as to why occasional memo fields are being either truncated or are not shown at all on the Details screen and, occasionally, text from these fields is not exported into my word processing program.

Naturally, I'm in a deadline situation with several reports due to a respected genealogist so I really, really care that my information is accurate. In one case, I have a Will Tag memo field which, as soon as I type in the text and click OK, the following happens: first the county and state no longer show on the Details Screen and are replaced by the name of the focus person; secondly, although I can see that the memo field is full of text, it does not output into word processing.

After repeatedly creating new Will Tags where the same thing happened, I tried using subsequent Note Tags to contain the information. At first this worked, and then it began exhibiting the same behavior as the Will Tag. After many repeat efforts, I managed to cobble together a work-around using Note Tags, but it's extremely awkward. I have no idea why this happened. There must be some sort of invisible-to-the-user control codes in these Tags.

There's more: in several Note Tags, I have laboriously typed out transcriptions of Revolutionary War audited accounts from SC. In the output report, only random words (sometimes the beginning of the memo field and sometimes only the last few words representing signatures) are output.

This is bad enough, but there's even more. I am probably the heaviest user of embedded citations in the WhollyGenes community. Most work perfectly (although, I'm unable to produce them in a List of Citations Report despite using TMGv7.04), but, yesterday some didn't. An example is a Note Tag that contains census information on three men. In the memo field, I typed the data I think applies to the focus person followed by an embedded citation. I then listed data for the second man with another embedded citation. For the third man's data, I used the regular citation screen. In the report, the sentences printed out, but no footnotes were produced from the two embedded citations so that all three men were shown with a citation source that applied only to the last man. In the past, if the citation wasn't properly formatted, the printout produced the flawed citation detail. It didn't this time. I've double-checked the citation format and it looks okay.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I've sent in a Trouble Report to tech support, but as it's the weekend I know I won't hear back soon enough to help me over the weekend. I really have to get this material into the mail by Monday morning at the latest, so I'm sort of desperate.

    Leslie

  15. To be precise there is only one My Documents folder on my entire computer and it is located at: C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents.

No other My Documents folder exists on any other drive, not on E., F. or G. I don't use it, so it isn't there. Windows is perfectly free to refer to it for administrative purposes, but I don't.

I hope this didn't confuse TMG v7 at installation. I have printed out all the Help information on rearranging data paths, as well as all Terry Reigel's reports on the subject, as well as Jerry Woodmason's. Once I'm satisfied that I can rearrange everything to my specs (except the log files), I'll purchase and use. I know I'll love it if I can just placed where I want it! I've already played with customizing the Toolbar.

    Thank you again.

  16. Original TMG version 6 path: E:\TMG v6 - before installation of trial version. This is the folder location of everything except projects, reports, pictures, TMG6 setup which are located on F drive.

My project data files are located F:\The Master Genealogist 6 where backups, projects, reports, Pix and setup file are located. Master folder on this drive was not renamed and all looks well.

Trial Version of TMG v7 installed here: C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\TMGv7 (copied directly from Explorer)

    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\TMGv7

There are no files under C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\My Documents\

Apparently when I installed TMG v7 just as TMG wanted it (see above) with no locations suggested by me, it and its associated apps were copied to: E:\TMGv7 (copied directly from Explorer). I see the complete TMG v7 folder, complete with aps, etc. The file origination dates show it's the new program.

TMG v6 program/apps were probably safe as there was a slight variation in folder name structure, but rather than take any chance on accidental file corruption, I have restored v6 from a cloned "picture" backup. I doublechecked file origination dates and nothing postdates 2007. Everything works.

I still think it would be wise to uninstall the trial version 7. Clean out all temporary files, etc. Do a complete cold start. Try again with a completely clean installation. Clean installs often work miracles; I just was panicked that something had eroded my wonderful TMG 6.

Thanks for keeping me relatively calm and advising,

    Leslie

  17. Jim, at this moment I'm not concerned about TMG v7. I am concerned about the program validity in version 6. Yes, the TMG v7 files were finally copied, maybe during the second time I opened v7. They now appear where they should be located - in my case under Administrator.

Frankly, at this moment, I really don't care if or where TMG v7 files are. Why did The Master Genealogist Version 6 Program file located on a completly different logical drive have its file folder renamed to The Master Genealogist V7 at the time I installed the trial version? There were no instructions given by me for the installation program to do anything on any drive other than the C drive.

Are the TMG Version 6 Program Files uncorrupted on my E drive? Should I reinstall version 6 in case something caused corruption in the version 6 program files during the installation of TMG v7 trial? At this moment I don't care about version 7. I don't care where it's files are. I don't care how great it is or how much I want to be able to use it. My only concern is thatTMG version 6 is okay. My data, on yet another logical drive, appears to have been untouched. No project data file folders were renamed so as far as I can see, so apparently nothing untoward happened here. The only program file folder renaming occurred in the TMG 6 program files - once again, on the E drive.

What "cut-off" dates would be valid for TMG v6 program files? I might be able to scroll through my listing to tell that way if any files had been overwritten . . . by accident I know. Still . . . . . please help me address the state of TMG version 6.

    Leslie

  18. Leslie, you haven't opened v7 yet? I suspect that's why you can't find the various data file locations - my understanding is they are not created and the various files copied there until the first time it's opened.

Of course, I've opened TMG v7. I opened it immediately after installation of the trial version, quickly looked it over, then closed the program appropriately. It was only after opening/closing v7 that I elected to look at my file structure via Explorer.

I am serious about something transient possibly happening during installation. I know the programmers at WhollyGenes are true professionals. No one in their right mind would code for the extraneous changes; but they appear to have occurred on my hard drive. We are having extremely irritating problems with Comcast and the only explanation I have for something errant occurring during installation is a connection issue. It's possible "something" occurred at the precise wrong moment and instructions were garbled/corrupted/etc. Voila = my problem.

I have no fear of uninstalling v7, disconnecting from the internet and doing a clean reinstall - the problem is the zip file needs to connect with WhollyGenes to install the program. I don't think it simply downloads the program so I could do a reinstall completely free of my usual "always on (allegedly)," broadband connection. My fear is that something in v6 was overwritten in its program files at the same time the folder names were changed. Possible? I don't know.

Our internet connection has become less and less reliable. I see no particular signs of surges (there are protectors in place), but it abruptly terminates at random intervals. TV has never been affected. We're having unsolvable internet phone issues as well.

  19. 1. Windows XP is configured to show hidden files.

    2. Sorry, I thought I had stated specifically that in my normal file organization, the OS goes on the C drive, programs on the E drive, data on the F drive and images on the G drive.

    3. V6 program was installed on the E drive; with its associated project data on the F drive.

    4. V7 was not directed to place anything anywhere specific. I expected it to install on the C drive under C:\Program Files\xxx; with Shared Program Data Files, User Program Data Files and User Data Files placed wherever TMG v7 wished: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\xxx and under C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\xxx and C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\xxx.

    5. This did not occur. Apparently only the Program Files were placed where TMG v7 usually places them. I initially thought everything else was where it should be; it is not. I've looked through Administrator, Default User, etc. and they aren't listed. I am using Jerry Woodson's handout showing file placement locations. I believe the paths may be shown in v7 under preferences, but have been afraid to open v7 since my first opening when everything looked okay. I made absolutely no changes to any paths, locations, preferences. Hadn't touched anything when, for some reason, immediately after installation of trial version I decided to close the program and check Windows Explorer to look at my file structure. I had this "funny" feeling that it might be a good idea to do so.

    6. On my E drive, the folders containing (what I assume to have been v6) have been renamed to TMG v7. V6 opens appropriately, but I hadn't printed out a listing of what files should be there in the program files and on what dates they were each created, so I can't determine if anything was overwritten.

    7. No changes were made to folder names on my project data drive partition (F drive). Data opens appropriately in v6 and has not been converted.

    8. Somewhat calmer now, I think my data is okay and probably v6, although I am nervous about it. I believe some sort of major failure occurred during installation (let's blame it on my internet connection with Comcast because heaven knows they are causing every other kind of phone/cable problem).

    Leslie

  20. You've provided no details so it is hard to evaluate your issue.

What were your existing v6 folders?

I did provide details: my existing v6 folders were on my logical E: drive. NOT ON THE C: DRIVE.

How did you set v7 up? Did you use Data_paths.txt? If so, what were the contents?

I did not set up or make any type of file placement change anywhere during or after the installation process. This was a simple installation allowed to go wherever TMG v7 wanted it to go. I did not intrude in any way on file placement. I'd intended to play with that later once I was comfortable with exactly what had to be done and how to do it.

What were the three data file folders created on the first TMG7 run?

With no direction by me, the program folder is in C:\Dcuments and Settings\All Users\ApplicationData\TMG. I cannot find the Program Data, User Program Data Files or User Data Files. They are not under C:\Documents and Settings\username [there is no username listing shown]. I have only Administrator, All Users, and Default User.

Wy did the installation program go onto an entirely different drive and change v6 folder names. I can't tell if anything was changed, not having a listing of program files with dates created. I am no longer certain where v6 is located, other than I can open it so perhaps it's safe.

Doesn't it seem advisable to uninstall v7 immediately? Thank you for any help you can provide in the mystery.

I can't think of any explanations for this. I'm afraid to uninstall v7 because I don't know what else may happen. Only my project data, located on still a different logical drive, appears unaffected.

  21. I insist on having programs/files/etc. where I want them. After much research I decided to try a trial version to make certain I could make the requisite changes to file structure safely prior to actually purchasing and using v7. I understand that all folders can be relocated (with effort) with the exception of the Log Files which don't matter to me. I know to use the Help file to write the code which will allow me to place everything else where it's safest from harm.

To my astonishment, when I downloaded and installed (really, there should be placement options for advanced users), while v7 installed where my "cheat" sheets showed it should, it also apparently changed the main folder names for TMGv6. I can open v6 wherein all my precious projects are stored from its icon, but I'm extremely concerned about the changes in my carefully named v6 folder. What on earth has occurred? Why? Frankly, if I had a roll-back provision resident on the computer, I would completely erase the download and installation.

Why would a trial installation that insists on being installed onto my operating system logical drive change an earlier version of the program folder names on completely different logical drive? Please advise.
