=== NEW UTILITY: Timeliner! ==========================

Bryan Wetton of BeeSoft, the makers of the PathWiz! exhibit management tool, has announced the availability of a new utility which will create a timeline from the existing events in your project. The timeline can then be displayed in TMG so that you can view those events in the context of other people's lives.

=== NEW AND FINAL UPDATE: GedStar Pro v3.3 ===========

Doug Gordon of GHCS Software has announced that there will be no further development of his companion software, GedStar Pro for handheld computers running the PalmOS operating system. As Doug points out, the PalmOS is effectively dead with no new hardware products supporting it so the discontinuation of his GedStar product line is sad and disappointing but not surprising.

With this announcement, GHCS Software released a new and final update, GedStar Pro v3.3, which includes "no new features or enhancements -- just a collection of minor bug fixes" that are targeted towards users who rely on GEDCOM transfers. (TMG users typically use GedStar's direct import feature instead).

For users who still rely on their trusty PalmOS devices, GedStar Pro is expected to be compatible with the forthcoming TMG v8. Doug Gordon reports that he intends to continue providing support for those users "for at least as long as their now-outdated PalmOS devices survive."

For the full announcement from GHCS Software, please see:

http://www.ghcssoftware.com/news.htm

Existing users who wish to upgrade to GedStar v3.3 should visit:

http://ghcssoftware.com/proddownload.htm

If you use a PalmOS handheld device and are considering migrating to a "Windows Powered" machine (e.g, SmartPhone, Pocket PC, etc.), then we encourage you to check out Pocket Genealogist which, like GedStar Pro, offers direct import of your TMG data (i.e., without GEDCOM):

=== RIP: Dick Pence =================================

As reported by Dick Eastman (www.eogn.com) and others, Dick Pence passed away on November 22nd. While some TMG users may know Dick as a good friend to the program, most don't realize how much influence he had on the program's development.

Dick was among the earliest advocates of using computers for genealogy -- an idea that struck many traditional genealogists in those days as somehow "cheating." Way back in 1985, Dick co-cauthored a book entitled, "Computer Genealogy: A Guide to Research Through High Technology." Considering the year, you can imagine the state of "high technology." My personal copy of the book is well-worn, however, because it included a check list of things that the authors dreamed would some day be in genealogy software programs.

In that day, it was a list of radical ideas -- like the ability to edit your data after it was entered (imagine!) -- and it was the first of many such lists that would serve as the blueprint for the first version of TMG.

By the time I met Dick, he had already retired from at least three other careers and was quickly establishing himself as a giant among computer genealogists. Attendees to national genealogy conferences will remember Dick as a very popular and entertaining speaker. He was the first person I thought of when planning our first company cruise -- and he surprised and honored me by accepting my invitation, despite being confined by that time to a wheelchair. In fact, he and his wife, Ellyn, went on our first two company cruises where he entertained us all with his folksy stories (like "Two Longs and a Short" which was also the title of one of his books) about growing up in South Dakota.

Dick was a pioneer in many ways, a talented genealogist, a generous teacher, and an inspiration to many. I was honored to call him a friend and I will miss him.
