wkasten 0 Report post Posted November 9, 2008 I use v6. I have encountered a name variation that will need to be applied to at least seven people in a family. When I first encountered this family in an earlier cencus, the surname was spelled HASE. In later censuses, the name is spelled HAESE. I know I could make name-var entries for each member (make new name primary, keep old name as variation, make appropriate notes). Probably wouldn't take much time, but I hope to know my software capabilities better and am wondering if I could make these changes universally for this specific group of family members? THANK YOU! Terry Reigel 0 Report post Posted November 9, 2008 John Cardinal's TMG Utility (free, John asks for a donation to his favorite charity if you like it) will 1) change the surname in the existing tags, or 2) add a new name tag with the new name. I know of no way to add the new name to a new tag and then make the new tag primary, as you suggest you would do, other than one-by-one. On the other hand, I wouldn't do that. While some users like to make name tags for every spelling variation they encounter, I don't see the value in recording in separate name tags all the errors made by various record-keepers. With the census, especially, there is little reason to believe any spelling you find was accurate. In my view, one should pick the spelling that seems most likely and record that in the primary name tag, while recording in the CD of each citation exactly what that source showed if different. Only if there seems to have been a conscious change of spelling by the family do I record both names in name tags. But, with TMG, you get you do it your way.
