  1. Version 8?

How a user uses a feature doesn't cause a bug. If you use a feature in a way that it isn't designed, you have to understand that a design change could cause your idea to not work, however, it also tends to affect the users who are using it properly in the same manner. A bug is when a feature isn't working the way it is supposed to work according to the design and the manual. A bug affects the user who is using the program as designed, just as it does the user who gets a little creative. Now having said that, it is hard for the beta testers to test every single feature to the extent to find every single bug. I may use a feature to a greater extent than any other user and would be more likely to find a bug in that one feature, but not find the simplest of bugs in another feature simply because I don't use those features. That wouldn't make me a good beta tester, because you need to test all the features. The reason for having beta testers is they test it in real world use and they do a remarkable job of finding bugs before we see a release. The rest of us users are incredibly indebted to them, because we get a quality product that does an amazing job with lots and lots of features that can be used for purposes we create on our own. By saying it will be released when it is ready, I read that to mean that Whollygenes and the beta team have tested it to the best of their abilities and found it ready to go. It's not going to corrupt my data. It's not going to create new data. That doesn't mean it isn't going to have any bugs. It just means that the people who have been using it for how ever long they have been testing it haven't found any bugs and have found it stable. And it means that we can infer nothing from previous release schedules. Personally, I'd be happy to find enough time lately to just open TMG 7.
  2. Version 8?

I need the output. Thanks. I know that TMG doesn't give dates, but they indicated a long time ago that they were working on the problem. Their recommendation before I bought my new laptop was go ahead and get the 64-bit. Other programs do not have this particular problem. Myunderstanding is that TMG will not be fixing the issue until TMG 8. While I can't speak for TMG & Co. I will note the following... TMG v4.00 released May 1999 TMG v5.00 released May 2002 TMG v6.00 released Dec 2004 TMG v7.00 released Dec 2007 If history is any judge I'd expect TMG v8.00 to be released by Dec 2010 at the latest but I don't expect it to be released before Windows 7 is released (for certification and campatibility reasons mainly). Okay, that's 3 years 2 years 7 months 3 years So "technically the next release" (I teach patterns to 4 year olds ) would be (2 years 7 months) Jul 2010 But my conjecture is no different than your conjecture. It will be ready when it's ready. It's also possible that the pattern hasn't been fully established yet.
  3. Little inconvenience - wishlist

I find while they almost always sort correctly on screen, they always sort incorrectly in reports. Weird that way huh?
  4. I've forgotten how to ...............

True, but it works for witnesses too. Handy feature and one of the many reasons I prefer custom roles.
  5. I've forgotten how to ...............

Dave, Master Tag Type>OTHER tab>Display witnessed tags as...
  6. Version 8?

I guess I am okay with a person wanting to change the layout. I used to go to a certain website every day. Loved it. Commented on it. Then they changed the layout. Now I rarely visit. Yes the reason is the layout. Just show me what is is you had in mind. I might like it better. I am not big on cutesy icons, but if I can change those, then you can have them. I do use Icons on my custom toolbar. So I am not opposed to icons, just the ones that look cartoonish.
  7. Mixing UK & US name styles

Neil, You'll also find that US women don't follow a stand naming structure either. Most use their first name, hubby's surname. Some use their first name, maiden name, hubby's surname, some hyphenate the two. Some keep their married name. So it wouldn't be uncommon to see Teresa Ghee Elliott Teresa Ghee-Elliott Teresa Ghee Teresa Elliott Hope that helps when setting up tags.
  8. Version 8?

I don't want to sound like I am opposed to any changes in how TMG looks, because I am always for improvements, but I think you need to be specific when you make requests. Interlocking windows that snap: Assuming you want them to automatically line up next to each other and not snap their fingers. This would be helpful especially with the custom toolbar better use of tabs : Personally I hate tabs on the windows and turned them off ages ago. color out of the box, : Do you know that there are already saved color schemes you can use in TMG? Or that you can create and save your own? See Preferences>Colors>schemes Virginia is using a steel color scheme. Mine is currently blue. It could change at any moment. use of the true Windows GUI rather than some weird DOS-like overlay: How would this look different than what we have now? And if I were making requests, I would say, no large cutesy icons, allow me to put MORE information on the screen, like the research log, not LESS.
  9. Changing Living Flag for lots of people

Neil, First what I would do is set the ? to N IF the person was say over 100. (Yes, that means you may kill off some cousin who is still fortunate to be living at 102, but you can probably manually pick those out.) That would then leave you with the people who were less than 100 with a ? or Y. You could then change those to Y and that would allow you to not include them in reports until you could prove they were deceased. To me, better alive and not included when really dead, than dead and included when really alive. Did that make sense?
  10. Unnatural act for TMG

If you want to show a chart type relationship, then you are headed in the right direction, but you have already seen the difficulties, because a CHILD can only have one primary FATHER. You could also do this with tags, but then you wouldn't be able to chart out relationships. I have just used tags for this, but I haven't tried to get relationships. For many of the apprentices I have found, the master became like a foster parent, and I created relationship tags for that, but the relationship is not primary. Since relationship tags can not have sentences, what you can do is create a tag that is used for reports (not charts) that states "John Jones became the master of Sam Smith on 23 Dec 1783, ..." To get a nice chart, no I have no idea how to do it other than to have two people for each person, and link them to one person as a master and as another as a real parent. Even then you come across the issue of a person having more than one master.
  11. Census Records

NO! Sorry. Yes, Endicott, WA was probably in the 15th precinct in one census year, but that does NOT mean that it was in the 15th precinct every census year. Those types of jurisdiction lines move more than county lines do. Don't believe me, go to a school board meeting towards the end of any school year. What I would do is record it as it is recorded on the census and not try and have one place for all three years.
  12. Custom Toolbar

Must add that I don't have multiple projects, so that may be why.
  13. Custom Toolbar

Jim That is not true. I use ENGLISH2 and never edit the ENGLISH labels and haven't seen this issue.
  14. Custom Toolbar

Evelyn, Are you sure that you are using a tag type that is in the PROJECT you are currently using? I don't have but one project, so I am not sure how that works, but it looks like you are creating the tags in one project, adding the button to the toolbar (which means it works for that project, and then trying to change projects, where for some reason that tag type does not exist. I have had problems with buttons stopping working IF after I created the button, I then renamed the tag type. But once the tag type is renamed, all I have to do is edit the button and point it to the new tag name and it works fine again. I understand your frustration, because you know it doesn't work, but you can't figure out how to describe the issue so that Jim can understand so that it can get fixed.
  15. Master Source List sorting options

I am not opposed to it, but what date field? Some of my sources don't have any dates (like books) but other's have several (like web pages). If I want them sorted by date entered, wouldn't that be the same as by source number since we enter them one after another. Let me state, that I am not against a feature if you need it, and if you can show me how you use it, I would probably want it but I'm not sure I understand this request.
  16. Master Source List

Jane, If we were talking about a book, I'd totally agree, but with obits, I like putting the transcription of the obit into the reminder field of the source so that when I use that source, I have the full transcription right there in front of me. Having a source for each obit allows me to do that. Having one for the Newspaper doesn't give me that same flexibility. ANd it only takes seconds to create the new source. To me the obit is the source, not the newspaper. It's really in what you are trying to accomplish. Personally, if it works for you, I wouldn't rework them. My way works for me, and your way works for you. It sounds like it is working for you quite well.
  17. first name only for witness or role?

You can also create a name for each person that is just the first name. Given Name: Elizabeth Surname:-- Sort Surname: Smith
  18. Research Log

Notice in the above image, that the sort is by Task name. Notice the 7 tasks that start with Deed-Book 38 are all sorted in order by page number Now notice the same tasks are sorted differently when first sorted by keyword. Best I can tell they are sorting first by keyword and then by edited order. Why are they not sorting by keyword and then in order by taskname? Lee says they are working fine for him, but this has been consistent behavior for me since upgrading to 7.04. I would find it much more helpful if they sorted by task name than this fairly random sort of lasted edited. The tasks not showing in the list haven't been edited yet.
  19. Research Log

That would definitely explain what I am seeing when sorting by keyword, but not when sorting by task name.
  20. Research Log

Jim, Is there a way we could have it default to task name over edited date? It seems to me having them in alphabetical order over random by when last edited.
  21. Grave GPS Coordinates

Since SS can now map a place based on the Lat Long field, you might also consider just using the Lat/Long for the cemetery as a whole. Otherwise, you will get a lot of markers very close together on your map. I haven't played with either feature, but you might want to before deciding on how to proceed.
  22. Institutional Names in TMG Footnotes

If I were me, I would recreate the element in a group other than a name type group, then change the source output template to use the new source element. I hate dealing with name elements and rarely use them for that very reason.
  23. Journal

I'm glad. I was hoping since it was late at night that my reply would send you the right direction, since I figured Jim or Terry wouldn't see it till this morning. I know how frustrating it is to be in the zone and come across something like that. Have fun playing.
  24. Journal

Not sure Kenny, but I think you are using a report that puts the BMDB tags first and then the other tags in sort order. I don't use TMG reports, so I can't help you with the different journal report styles, but I think that is what is happening.
  25. caption for image

How is the image attached? Images attached to people can have captions, but images attached to tags can not.
