  1. Organizing / Filing Photos & Documents

Tom, For documents, I file them in hanging file folders by surname and use cheap three ring binders (think around ten cents each) for document type. I use the TMG source number to locate them. I use file folder labels and write the TMG source number on that, and stick that to the protective sheet and not the document. When I scan it, I store it on my computer in the same filing system: SURNAME/DOCUMENT/personname.jpg Pictures go into an album with acid free papers to protect them. Again, I use file folder labels that get stuck to the album. The pictures slide into sleeves.
  2. Another approach, I use Son01, Daughter01, Son02, Daughter02, etc. If the first child is a boy, I use Son01, if it is a girl I use Daughter02. If the second child is a boy, I use Son02, a girl, Daughter02... My head of household sentence then says: Also living in the household were: <his wife, [R:wife]><, his son, [R:son01]><, his daughter, [R:daughter01]><, his son, [R:son02]><, his daughter, [R:daughter02]><, his son, [R:son03]><, his daughter, [R:daughter03]><, his son, [R:son04]><, his daughter, [R:daughter04]><, his son, [R:son05]><, his daughter, [R:daughter05]><, his son, [R:son06]><, his daughter, [R:daughter06]><, his son, [R:son07]><, his daughter, [R:daughter07]><, his son, [R:son08]><, his daughter, [R:daughter08]><, his son, [R:son09]><, his daughter, [R:daughter09]><, his son, [R:son10]><, his daughter, [R:daughter10]> That will read "Also living in the household were: his wife, Rebecca Jones, his son, James Jones, his daughter, Samantha Jones, his daughter, Amanda Jones, his daughter Jennie Jones, his son Adam Jones... That way the children print in the HOH sentence in the order they are listed in the census. I prefer to only use one person for the individual sentence, so it is "[W] was enumerated...." for all roles other than the HOH. Just thought I'd share that, since it might give you more ideas on how to handle it. The more ideas you have upfront, the less cleanup you have later when a better mousetrap comes along...
  3. Adding Info

Dale, That is the beauty of TMG. You create the tag and attach everyone to it as witnesses. For census, I attach the father as P1. I leave P2 blank. Then I attach the wife and children as witnesses. Then your source, image, place and date. Now you can customize sentences for each person via roles. Sounds like you are really new to TMG. Let me suggest you start by reading Terry Reigel's website at http://tmg.reigelridge.com/ YOu might also want to order the Primer and the videos off the whollygenes website. They will be worth their weight in gold in the time they will save you in learning TMG.
  4. Layout Toolbar

Ah, I see. Yes, that would be helpful. I just added them all to one toolbar and don't change layouts anymore.
  5. Note vs Memo

I have a special tag I use for NOTES to myself. I never print it. In that tag I can write things like: Was an abusive husband. Wife divorced him after he punched three year old in mouth... I think he might be the same guy who is buried in John's Cemetery Got email stating he was in the Civil War, but have not found any proof He was a member of the Episcopal Church. Their records are available through ILL, but I haven't ordered them yet. I use the memo field of the tag for information that makes that tag more interesting to read. He was born ...He had red hair and blue eyes. His mom said he looked like her Uncle John, which made everyone laugh because Uncle John had black hair and green eyes. He married her..They were married on a rainy day in June. After the wedding tornadoes were seen in the area, and the honeymoon had to be postponed because the hotel was destroyed by the storms. He made a will... He gave his wife $25 and left the rest of his estate to his girl friend and her young son, that many speculated belonged to him.
  6. BMD(B) or BD(B)M Format for Journal Reports?

GJ, If I didn't want the same data reported about Sally, then I wouldn't change her sentence structure. Make the Groom sentence say: After divorcing his first wife, Bill married Sally. Make the Bride say: Sally married Bill. Yes, it's complicated, but that is what custom sentence structures are good for.
  7. Report of recent changes

Michael, You must have a small tree. Assuming one page per person, I would have a 16,000 page report. That's a lot of comparing. <G> And most of my people run 3-4 pages.
  8. BMD(B) or BD(B)M Format for Journal Reports?

Not going to discuss the order of tags printing, because I don't use TMG's journal report and have no clue how it prints. But if you want: Bill was born, Bill married Judy, Bill married Sally And you want an explanation of what happened to Judy change the sentence structure: Bill was born... Bill married Judy.. After his first wife's death, Bill married Sally... After divorcing Sally, Bill married Mary Ann... Bill died. That's pretty easy to do with roles.
  9. Source description: Cemetery Marker

David, I modified it just a little, but I use it for: 1) a tombstone that I have visited myself 2) a printed cemetery listing 3) online images of tombstones
  10. No Tags Print w/posthumous Tag

    Keep us posted. Good luck
  11. Tag for slave as possible relative?

Bumping this due to questions on TMG-L
  12. Slave Schedule

Bumping this due to recent questions on TMG-L
  13. Slavery in a data set

Bumping this due to questions on the TMG list
  14. No Tags Print w/posthumous Tag

My next suggestion would be to run VFI and Optimize until there are no problems in the VFI log. Then try again. If you are still having this issue, send an email to tech support. As far as I know of and I have been using TMG for a long time, if a tag is selected in the list of tags for a report, it will print. The only exceptions are charts where only the PRIMARY tag of a group will print, but since you are using the journal report, that should not be an issue. I have lots of tags that print after the death date, so I know that is not your issue.
  15. No Tags Print w/posthumous Tag

Evenwhen, You might try moving it to the OTHER group and see if that solves the issue. While TMG might warn you about tags after death, I assure you there is no reason why you can't have lots of tags after the death date. I do. The problem is since you have it in the BURIAL group, for some reason the journal report you are using is treating that as a DEATH tag. I think moving them to the OTHER group will solve your issues.
  16. Embedded Citations

I agree. And you can't be sure their program reads it correctly either. I prefer to send printed reports. There is no doubt what I mean when I say "John was born with green eyes and blond hair on 23 Jan 1900 in Rutherford County, TN." We all understand it and the person who received it can change it to "John was born 23 Jan 1900 in Rutherford County, TN. He had green eyes and blond hair." And not change it's meaning at all. If I want to cite my grandmother for the green eyes part, his wife for the birth date and the census for the year, it is obvious to everyone what I meant. If the other person decides to drop the part about the green eyes and blond hair, they can also drop the citation from my grandmother. I once sent a GEDCOM from TMG to a cousin who imported it into FTM. She then sent me a GEDCOM back which I imported into TMG. Somewhere along the process, my MIL became my spouse. Luckily I was smart enough to not make it part of my project. I had her send a printed report, and I manually entered the few family members she had that I needed. It took about an hour to do. Cleaning up the GEDCOM would have taken me weeks. I guess I am too much of a perfectionist, but I know I am not married to my MIL. Now I realize that sometimes you have to use GEDCOM, like posting online. I just don't use those type of sites. When I post online, I prefer narratives. I say what I mean and cite what I say.
  17. Layout Toolbar

Bruce, I have no clue what you are asking. Where are you when you say Layout "box"? And what do you mean by Layout Toolbar? I am not sure what you are asking, so I can help or even be sure what you want is missing. Maybe tech support understands, but as a user, I can't find the window you are in. WHat does it say at the top of the window in which you are trying to work?
  18. Birth Sentences

Mine is pretty plain vanilla too. But you can spice it up by what you put in the memo. Saying John was born 07 Dec 1941 is pretty boring. Saying John was born 07 Dec 1941. His mother heard of the attack on the Naval Base, Pearl Harbor, where both his father and uncle were stationed and went into premature labor. John was born 5 weeks early, weighing 7 lbs, 14 oz. His uncle was killed in the attack, but his father wasn't hurt. Or you could tell it like my dad did. James was born on 21 Jun 1936. It was a dark and snowy day, the day James was born. His mother had already walked up hill both ways, barefoot, to milk the cows. Because the family had no bucket, she had to carry the milk in her hands, so she had to make many trips and that was probably what sent her into labor... I might point out that my dad was born on the first day of summer and the family lived in down town, so there was no cow, but dad told it his way and we kids were enthralled.
  19. Exhibit Log

I am the same with Jim on the external exhibits. My TMG backup is 39 MB. Backing that up takes about a minute or less. My Pictures directory is 7.3 GB. If I tried to back that up with TMG it would take hours to do a simple backup. I backup TMG several times an editing session, but Pictures just once a month.
  20. Off Topic

Mike, You can use TMG U to delete those if they really have no value to you.
  21. citing e-mail sources

I have an email tag where I copy the full text into the memo field of the tag. Attach it to the people mentioned, the person who sent it etc. Then I can delete it from outlook
  22. Sort order of marriage names

I don't use the marriage sentence. BUt I do use that name from that point on in the narrative.
  23. Bulk data deletion?

Make sure you have a good backup. Make sure you really want to delete those and not change them to another tag type. And then delete away. If it saves you time, don't forget you can send a donation to John's favorite charity. And congrats on solving your own question in the exact same post.
  24. Obituary Tag Type

Bill, That's pretty much how I do mine as well. I like the text in a separate tag because I prefer the footnote to be before the transcription, so I cite the OBIT tag, but not the OBIT-Text Tag.
  25. Guest list at Marriage Event

I have added my entire wedding party, but not the guests, but there's no real reason you couldn't. I know of no limit to the number of witnesses a tag can have. I would definitely use a special role so you could exclude it from printing from the wedding tag, just by editing the sentence. A separate tag might be a good idea as well. I asked the same thing on TMG-L a few weeks ago because my 2nd great grandfather was a minister of the gospel and most of the weddings he performed were of people in my database already. I did add him as the minister, but don't know if I will add it to his narrative just yet. By knowing he was performing a wedding, I know where he was on a certain date, (he was a traveling minister) so it's helpful to track it. I always feel anything you want to keep up with, comment on, or publish should be entered into TMG. There are ways to exclude, include, footnote, or otherwise print an item that your options are as you know limitless. I wish you luck with the process though. It sounds tedious. <G>
