To merge duplicate places you need to run the Optimise from File, Maintenance. Any places which are identical will be merged. The Help files say the following which helps understand why some won't merge. For two place records to be considered duplicates, all fields must be the same. This includes the Style, if one was used to create some of the entries. It is possible, for example, for two Master Place records to appear identical, but to have been generated using different Styles. Optimising will not remove unused place records for which a start year, end year, comment, or short place name have been recorded.

Has anyone having the problem tried starting the pc in safe mode, connecting to the internet and then opening TMG to see if the problem still occurs. In safe mode the firewall is not loaded so if the problem does occur then that rules out firewall. If it doesn't then it points to the firewall.

John, Thanks for this. It's a very good way to handle these and I changed my sentences straight away.

Hi Judy, In my experience you get this message because it is not a pdf file but another format which has been named .pdf. So can you describe the process you are following to produce the pdf file. Also can you say what version of Adobe Reader you have on your pc.

You're welcome

If E: is a CD drive then you cannot write directly to a CD when backing up in TMG unless your CD writing software allows direct access. You should backup to the C drive and copy onto the CD.

Check for Duplicate People
jeffpiper replied to Jack D. Lovelace's topic in Older Products and Versions
Hi Jack, I see the same thing and will pass the issue on. -
You've probably done this by now but since it thinks files are still being used, have you closed the pc down, left for about 20 seconds and restarted. If that works then Optimise and Validate.
-
It sounds like you are wanting to do is have a set of data on each pc, work on both and then transfer the data from pc1 to pc2 without losing everthing you've done on pc2. It is not possible unfortunately . If you wish to work on 2 pcs then you can only have one set of data which you backup and restore between them.

Are you trying to print the report or run it to a file and select a pdf format?

Intermittently recently when opening TMG6.12 I have got the message "Structure Version is missing. Please contact tech support for assistance". click OK and it closes. opening the program again gives the welcome screen and I'm able to open my last project. run VFI and it's OK. The program is fine for a while and then repeats. Any suggestions

Structure Version is Missing Error
jeffpiper replied to jeffpiper's topic in Older Products and Versions
Thanks Virginia, I will search the forum. It was a phrase I couldn't recall reading so hadn't actually searched. If I had I could probably have found the answer straight away. -
Look at http://www.whollygenes.com/forums201/index...?showtopic=7945 which has the list of proposed features for v7. It is 4 entries down.
-
John, If you haven't already done it then you should Reindex, Optimise and Validate (VFI) to see if it fixes the problem.

individuals long dead, but not shown as such

John Cardinal's TMGUtility has a function to set Living=N. The caluclation is based on a BMDB before a date you specifiy and uses the 5 generation rule as well to set. It can be downloaded from www.johncardinal.com -
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~jeffpiper/ This is a web site created with Second Site 2. Not quite an "Out the box" site there are some customisations to it. To produce something of this quality by hand would take me an awful long time. Second Site 2 is a must if you want to publish your website online from TMG or produce CDs for family members. You are looking in the right place and to get what you want you need to alter the output columns in the Options tag on the Report definition screen. You could also set up a filter for a specific group of people on the main definition screen e.g. living.
-
Can you not install the program and directory on each pc? you would then transport the external hard drive between pcs and the relevant fonts/files/registry entries would be in place on the internal hard drive of each machine
-
Thanks for this Theresa. I'd never thought of it but it's ideal on my census tags where P1 is always Head of Houshold and marriages where P1 is Groom.

TMG can't backup directly to the CD because of the way the backup is formed from the many files in the database. It is only possible if you have CD burning software which can be set for direct access. (Uses a temp file on the hard drive). Backup to the C drive and copy to the CD.

Deepest Apologies Lorna, I didn't fully read your post for where you were. I've looked in the right place now, the merge screen, and see what you see. Despite the tag being set to show witness rather than the title, it clearly give the tag title. The one I looked at then had 2 deaths as he was witness to his father's death. I agree some clarification is needed if the tag is present when the person is a witness.
-
Hi Lorna, Well I have now and it does work <G>. I'd come across it before somewhere. I agree that it would be a good to be able to set globally for tags so you could toggle between the 2 options.
-
Lorna, If you Edit the tag in the Master Tag Type List then on the Other Tab is a section "Display Witness Tags". Select "As Witness" and it won't show Death.

Some Names Listed First Last Instead of Last, First
jeffpiper replied to alacrityrose's topic in Older Products and Versions
Another possibility is that these people have a second name variation tag so the main one looks alright. Why not post an image of their person view and the name tag box. Someone might spot something else
