  1. Citing Email

Thats what I do, but I cite the emailer as the source and add the individual email as text file exhibits. So there is one source with multiple exhibits. I do sometimes add pertinant information from the email to the tag memo. This way I dont have lots of sources but each email is easy to find. Ben
  2. Hello, SS shows up the following missing exhibit: *NOT FOUND: EdwOakMarr, Event 0 (Image) c:\Program Files\The Master Genealogist\pics\Photos\EdwOakMarr.tif But, I cant find the event that this supposedly belongs to. I have searched through all the events associated with that person and there seems to be no event 0 Is this something I can find or will I have to email my project to TMG Support? Ben
  3. Finding an event by number?

Yep That worked, thank you very much. Ben
  4. Guardians

Hello, This is a basic reply as there are others that can give a more detailed answer There are adoption tags, foster tags, god parent tags, step parent tags and parent other tags. There is also note tags. Also it is fairly easy to create your own tags. Go to Add Tag screen (F4), click on ADD, give it a label - guardian, for example, select the parent/child relationship radio button. The just create you rsentences if you wish. I would perhaps use Parent Other tags. Ben
  5. I would definitely recomend Terry's site, I found it invaluable when i was a beginner (not much changed there) to genealogy and how to use TMG. I have also used his accents and sentences. Ben
  6. View History: more than ten?

I would like to see a user definable amount too, that way it is entirely customisable depending on your set up and preference. Ben
  7. Wishlist: Remember last exhibit-folder

I will add my support too. I have pointed TMG to a specific folder but that folder then has sub-folders in. Remembering the last exhibit itself would be an advantage. @ John That would work in some situations but there are times when Iadd an exhibit, edit some tags perhaps, switch to and then update an external database, then switch back to TMG add another exhibit. During this I might have copied something else. Ben
  8. Really! Keeping on topic, I am planning my first proper outing soon and I would have forgot a lot of stuff if I hadnt read these. Ben
  9. Board Organization

I agree laura. Mostly... I think that styles and reports could be heaped together, and I think sources and methods is more of a 'how to do' genealogy topic than a TMG support topic, so this would be covered in the tips and hints Also multi sub-forums would require a higher level of moderating to ensure that people's post were put in the right forums. There are reasons for not adding more sub forums. Ending up with a site that would be a nightmare to find things in and having to navigate between many sub-forums would be just as awkward. As for the FAQ, I think that this is a much neglected area especially as TMG has a steep learning curve. There are questions that are being asked over and over again that could be added that havent been. Things could be added from TMG-L too, it wouldn't have to be made up of things that are asked here. Well thats my two-penneth anyway... Ben Also a lot of people use TMG-L that has a much quicker time between asking and receiving help.
  10. Exhibit Log Icon

Hello, I just noticed that my exhibit log icon is always green, even if there are no exhibits for that person. I seem to remember that it should be grey if there are no exhibits. Is anyone else experiencing this? Ben
  11. Exhibit Log Icon

Whoops, posted too soon. After turning the standard toolbar on and off, and then restarting my project, its back to normal. Ben
  12. Flag Error

Hello, I have flags for 1841, 1851, 1861 census etc up to 1901. These flags have values Y, N ,P, -. If I change several flags, TMG opens a blank details window, with no person and no ID number. I can return to the previous person viewed, but if I try to change to a different person i get the open TMG database window. It happens 90% of the time when changing flags. For example, I just added 5 new people from an image of the 1851 census. I then attempted to update all their flags for the census' based on their ages (so a Y for 1851 and then P (possible) for others), after 15-ish changes the error started. The only way I can carry on with my project is to close and open it. I can leave TMG open. Ben
  13. Flag Error

I don't use the expanded picklist and I have never merged 2 people... If I do reindex or run any maintenance, it doesn't come up with errors. My error file says: 05.12.03, 16:42:56 ok >C:\WINDOWS\system32\bbFolderTree.ocx was registered but this wasn't when the error occurred. Ben
  14. Flag Error

And I was also using the siblings window or double clicking on the parents names. Some times I used a filtered PE, sometimes not.
  15. I too have experienced this problem, but as it seems so entirely random I have never reported it I have never been able to get it to do it on demand either. Ben
  16. Hello, I have just purchased the National Burial index (Second Edition) and I am trying to work out ways to cite it. I have searched on TMG L, and the Internet in general and no one seems to have mentioned this. Do I state the NBI as the Repository, and the information from the place information as the source, with the actual details of the burial as the detail. Leading to lots of sources as each person would have a different source. Or Do I state the NBI as the source without a Repository and then use this generic source and use the citation detail to record the specific information for each individual person? Thank you, Ben
  17. Master Place List editing

Hello, When you open up the edit place screen the Place Style should say UK Standard Place where as yours must say US Standard Place. If you open the Place Style menu by clicking on the Place Style button, you can change the standard place style to UK Standard. Ben
  18. Known Bug List

    I agree. Ben
  19. Forum address change?

I have the forum in my favourites as http://www.whollygenes.com/forums but that now says "You are not authorised to view this page etc etc" Has it changed to http://www.whollygenes.com/forums201 or has my favourites tricked me.. If it has changed, then I didnt know it was going too and although it wasnt hard to find it anyway, I was wondering if other users may be having trouble trying to find it... Ben
  20. Forum address change?

SPAM complaints for a newsletter!!! The world of the internet never ceases to amaze me... Ben
  21. Forum address change?

That link does seem to work now, so maybe internet explorer has tricked us all, but if its happened to 4 people then its a big coincidence.... And if it had have changed then a newsletter or other mass email could have let people know... Ben
  22. Forum address change?

Seems a bit strange to change a forum url with out letting people know or redirecting them from the changed address..... Ben
  23. Members Map

    Hey look a Members Map!!
  24. Site Issue

Hello, A suggestion for the site would be to change the button at the bottom of the post screen from a 'reply with quote' button to just a 'reply' button. A vast majority of replies to posts quote the entire previous post because people press that button with out realising that it is the quote button despite the quotation marks. If the quoting is intentional then maybe a little guidance is needed to highlight to people that there is no requirement to quote a complete post as you wouldnt be replying to it if you wasnt referring to it. Quotes are only needed to highlight specific lines in a post. I know that you can press that button to reply and then delete the quote but that doesnt seem to be happening either. Ben
  25. Site Issue

I understand that this would be difficult if not impossible. Thats why the suggestion was to move that particular button. I agree that the button has its use, I just feel that it is misleading for novice forum users to have a button that says 'reply' at the bottom of the post, when it actually quotes the whole previous post. The proof that it is misleading is by the large number of quoted posts in a thread. It was just a suggestion...
