Hello, After a too long absence from my research I have returned and decided to just go over everything and catch up. I have noticed for one of my younger people that in the details tab I have an age of 3?. Any ideas why there is a ? after the age? There is a birth tag with a standard date in so I am confused. As usual. Thanks in advance.

I've just tried this and after struggling a bit with the installation, I must say that I am very impressed with the results. It looks good and new, easy to see and shows great potential for the future. One to keep an eye on for sure. Ben

Looking back through my project it is clear that my use of the citation detail was very inconsistent and, in some places, unnecessary. I would like to go back over them all and amend where necessary. Is there a way that I can view all the citation details that have been entered, in some form of table possibly, so that I can compare citation details and make them consistent with out having to open every tag and then every citation for every person? Hello, I have the need to make a filter that will change a flag for me but it is turning out to be more complicated than I originally envisaged. I have several Flags called Brit Census 1841, 1851 etc, up to 1911 and I use these with -,Y,N,P for not applicable, yes, no or possible and I use them to help me work out where I could find the relevant people in the census or if they have already been found. I am trying to make a filter that will allow me to identify which people could be on each census for each year, and then run a LoP to change the flag to P as I have forgotten to update people's flags as and when I have added them or when I have found them on the census. I originally thought that a simple filter consisting of: BIRTH GROUP DATE DOES NOT COME BEFORE 1741 ANDBIRTH GROUP DATE DOES NOT COME AFTER APR 1841 AND(DEATH GROUP DATE DOES NOT COME BEFORE APR 1841 ORBURIAL GROUP DATE DOES NOT COME BEFORE APR 1841) would filter out all those not born in the 100 years before 1841 and those that have died before 1841. However, if someone has a birth group tag that has an empty date they still get included and those with no death or burial group tags get left out. I am assuming that I will need a several filters that need to pick up each group of people individually and then somehow combine them to get the required output but I have tried for several days to do it and I just can't seem to. Can anyone else point me on the right direction? The time I have taken to work it out would probably have been long enough to do all 1700 people manually but it's now the principle of not being able to work out how to do it that is spurring me on.

That's great, thanks Jim. The results that filter produces seem to give me what I am after. The main problem I had was that I had put in Baptism Tags that had no date entered which were added even if the birth date was outside the filter criteria, so I have changed these to show 'after dates' and the results are better. I will let you know if I notice any unexpected results. Ben

Hello everyone, long time no post I know but I am still around Anyway, as my project grows I am finding that I use the PE filter a lot more and I keep getting frustrated with the filter dialogue box that I suggest could be altered slightly. If I set a filter up, on many occasions I want to adjust the same filter in a small way but keep the criteria. For example, I may want to search for all Birth Reg tags for my flagged ancestors before a certain date, and then look for Marr Reg tags for the same flagged ancestors before the same date, however, as soon as I change the field column from Birth Reg to Marr Reg, the subfield, operator and value columns all reset to the default values and I have to change them all to what I want again. I know this isn't a huge problem but it would save time for users by changing what is a 4 click process to a 1 click one.

What you may find though, as I did, that the 'specify folders pop up' defaults to the same location each time, so for every folder you wish to add, you have to go through the file tree and add each folder individually, so, as in my case, if you have 40+ different folders it will become an unbearably painful and slow task. In my case I gave up and am currently using a very jumbled and large exhibit folder. My only complaint with TMG v7

I have an illness tag with the sentence: --a brain tumor after a routine eye test. Further tests showed a tumor at the top of her spine. When I run reports, (individual narrative and Ind.Nar. previews) the sentence is shown as: She was ill with (an unknown value) etc If i put 1 exclusion marker, I get the same sentence on the report. It says in Help that double exclusion markers should stop the entire tag from being printed. Whenever I post a topic on here its always me doing something wrong, so what have I done wrong this time

I have a new laptop with Vista and I keep having the same irregular problem. Every so often I can see through the windows in TMG to any pages below. This happens on any area where there is no text. Would that not be possible with Terry's system if you just had more flags and more colours?

One way of doing this is to set up accents and flags within TMG. I use the same system defined by Terry Reigel on his TMG Tips site. His system lets me see how someone is related to me either as an ancestor, sibling of an ancestor, cousin, marriage (to an ancestor, cousin or sibling), parent of someone married into the family or as unknown by a simple colour system. The complete article can be found here.

It spans the counties of SUFFOLK and NORFOLK. It goes back to the mid 1600's. I originally constructed the site in Frontpage and posted it with my ISP at the time back in 2004. I changed ISP and now I can't update it so I applied to Freewebs and used SS to rebuild it. I have adjusted the generic theme with my own graphics and added some custom pages. There is now a link to a forum and I am looking into integration with Twitter via an RSS feed.

Hello everybody! Long time no see thanks to Xmas and my laptop giving up the ghost, but I am back with a new machine. This one has Vista and although it has installed fine first time, I get an error message the first time I start up TMG: Cancel cancels it , Ignore lets TMG load up and Help does nothing. If I cancel it, and then restart TMG it starts up first time. Any ideas?

Thanks Terry It seems things never change, I still think I have searched high and low for an answer before I post and you still show me the error of my ways! It was the setting TMG to run as administrator that was the problem.

I dont think that it is a case of being a 'lumper' or not, you could take as many screenshots of each individual piece of information and give it individual sources etc. I understand that for a large amount of information it could be a lot of work but if you want to immortalize information it is a possibility. I also see that if the information on the website in question changed overtime, you would still have the old information and would have to update all the image files, (your original point of the thread), but the same can be said for linking to a website. You may be linking to a family tree that someone has researched and published and they could then delete the information you are pointing your users to. Really you would need to check the website in question frequently to ensure that the information is still available. The only advantage of grabbing or linking to a website, that I can see, is the initial amount of work required. Screen shots of information saved as an image or downloading a complete website is just a different approach to the same outcome. However , For grabbing complete websites I use Pagesucker (http://www.pagesucker.com/). I paid the $10 fee for the complete version and I have had absolutely no trouble with it. You can read the information pages but basically it downloads the complete site you want and it has user definable rules to allow you control over how much or how little you want to download. I use it for when i have no access to the internet and i might need a lot of information, Terry's tips etc Ben

Hello Jim, When I come across information in a website that I require (although I must admit that I dont do this very often, perhaps I am missing out on something?), I take a screen shot and then manipulate it in an image program to delete my browser etc. Is this not an option? I suppose that there could be times when there could be more than a screen shot's worth of info and I know there could be copyright issues but there is no commercial gain, the website is acknowledged in the source information and if you want to be extra careful you could email the site to request permission. Drifting from the thread again but... In my opinion , this seems as though you are saying that you cannot cite as a source anything that is not permanent. And surely nothing is guarenteed to be around for ever. Or have I taken it the wrong way too I cite things the same as Laura. I put people as sources and then attach all the information to that person, emails, letters, conversations. All the information is 'lumped' together - the good old lumpers Vs splitters debate...again. When the cited person is no longer available the information they supplied is still there for everyone to see. As for the question in hand about filing systems, I dont have enough physical material as yet to have a filing system but as it builds it seems that I will be a at a distinct advantage of starting from scratch. I will probably group things by surname with either the TMG generated reference number or using a file reference number relevant to the document that i will generate my self. A completely different, although not neccesarily good, idea could be to create a filing cabinet tag and attach it to everyone and then when an item is added you could just add it to the filing tag. That way everytime you look at a person in TMG you can see what they have and where in the file. Ben
