  1. Trouble putting exhibits into reports

When an exhibit is missing, there is no space reserved for it. Thus, there are no properties to check. The exhibits are mostly linked to persons. The option to output all exhibits is selected in the report. ========== Wait, wow, I just saw that the problem is over. For some unknown reason, TMG repaired itself! Maybe several verfifications, checks, redefinition of exhibit folder, or whatever, corrected the error. Anyway, thanks for your inspiring help.
  2. Trouble putting exhibits into reports

Jim, thanks for your reply. TMG v6 does not have an Exhibit tab (sorry, I see now that I should have placed the topic in the v6 forum). But in Preferences / Current Project Options / Advanced the Save image thumbnails is switched off. All exhibits are in a single folder.
  3. Trouble putting exhibits into reports

After moving TMG v6 to a new system, I have the same problem: in all reports the exhibits are not shown. All exhibits are external and the location is the same as on the old system. New exhibits, however, are shown. I ran the VFI, including the check of external exhibits: no problems found. How can I fix this problem? Any help is appreciated.
  4. After upgrading from TMG v6.09 to v6.11, I notice an unusual long delay before the Report Definition screen (e.g. for the Ancestor Chart) comes up. TMG seems to be very busy for more than one and a half minute (!!!!) before finally the screen is shown. Then, when selecting another configuration name, this configuration is loaded, but this also takes about one minute. Saving a changed configuration also takes this amount of time. The same problem occurred some time ago, maybe this was in TMG v5. TMG v6.09 was OK. I hope the problem can be fixed soon, since it is an annoying discomfort that makes the generation of a report (with a number of try and error loops) a time-consuming task.
  5. In TMG v6.09, the "structure version" problem still exists. In my situation (Windows XP Pro SP2), the following applies: The message "Structure version is missing. Contact tech support for assistance." is given after starting TMG in the following situations: 1) if a TMG project is opened by another user, and 2) if the TMG project was opened before when working Offline (Windows XP Pro feature to enable working when not connected to a network and shared disks, e.g. with a notebook). TMG ends and can be restarted. Then the Welcome window is shown (even if this had been switched off in the preferences) and after selecting the last project button, the program works as normal. The double restart every time is very irritating. Probably Wholly Genes support is not aware of the problem, they cannot solve it or it has a (too) low priority. Wake up folks! Addition 2006-07-27: The file vfp7rerr.log does not contain time-related errors, only many of the following lines:
  6. A marriage end by a divorce or the death of the spouse. My question is how TMG handles the death. I expect that in the events of a partner, a tag must be added when the marriage partner dies. Otherwise, a marriage seems to continue. What is the standard way of working? Any help is appreciated.
  7. This can be stay as it is. I suggest only to add something that is currently missing.
  8. Thank you all for your answers. I notice that the solutions you use are all are by manually adding something. I would like that the TMG program takes care of this, for example by automatically adding some end-of-marriage tag when a spouse dies. In report outputs I would like the marriage to appear like ´marriage 1920 - 1936´, just as the living period. What do you think? Is this a feasible solution?
  9. TMG uses the (default) Windows XP folder "c:\Program Files\The Master Genealogist\" for storage of temporary and/or user-dependent data at run-time. This was normal in the old Windows versions 3.11 up to Windows 95, but it is considered as a large security vulnerability in the versions in use these days. This implies namely that any user must have write access to this folder. This is not a normal situation. For security reasons, by default only administrators are allowed to write (and install) here. The current situation is causing many problems in a multi-user environment as Windows XP. It also makes that user settings are shared. In Windows there are various folders available in the root "c:\Documents and Settings\", accessible by means of Windows system variables. Local data per user may be for example stored in "\Documents and Settings\<user name>\Local Settings\Application Data\". I hope that Wholly Genes will change soon this according to current standards.
  10. Perhaps a very simple question, but I'm probably overlooking something: How can I create a filter that shows all people married to someone having a certain surname? Any help is appreciated.
  11. There is still a problem: if a witness of a marriage also has the name Prin1 or Prin2, the tag entry is included. How can I suppress this?
  12. Please note that TMG, using the program folder as it does now, will certainly not run on the coming Windows Vista. This is becasuse, for security reasons, the access rights of normal users are even more restricted than in Windows XP.
  13. Hi, When trying to generate a List of People report I get the warning A report of this type is already open. Please close the preview window. But there is no report open nor any preview window! What to do now?
  14. Error Report already open

Finally I found out what caused the trouble. It turned out that the problem occurred for a certain user that was not part of the administrators group. It was the setting of the access rights of c:\Program Files\The Master Genealogist folder. This user was allowed to write and modify, but not to delete. Thus, the TMG report program was not able to delete it's files. I got not much help from Wholly Genes Support. They only told me that the problem was forwarded to the programmers. But that was months ago... To avoid this kind of problems, I issued a change request to avoid the use of the programs folder for temporary and user-dependent files. Refer to Wish list: Let TMG use standard Windows' folders for temp. data, TMG now uses the Program Files folder having restricted access
  15. The TMG v6.04 is clearly a program with a long history. This user interface and features are not always as logical as you may expect. Here are some remarks on the Focus group feature. 1) Focus groups can be imported and exported. However, this is not a real import or export, but a load and save (as is explained in the Help!). 2) For unknown reasons, the location of the groups can not be selected either. Are they part of the project database? It is now not possible to exchange focus groups with co-researchers. 3) Another point is that it would be nice to apply a focus group to the filter of the Project Explorer (as is possible for several reports). Thus, the group can be viewed as a whole in the project itself, rather that in report outputs. I hope that Wholly Genes will change the following: 1) Change Import focus group to Load focus group, and Export focus group to Save focus group. (This is a terminology change only.) 2) Make it possible to save the group to a file. 3) Make it possible to apply the focus groups in the Project Explorer filter. Any comments on this proposal?
  16. Robin, Please note that adding tags changes the Last Edited Date, and that there are no tools in TMG to delete these tags. In fact I don't care about the two-column results. If the duplicates are all in a focus group, the CFD process can quickly recreate the view. Now it may take a long time.
  17. Wishlist: A Wishlist Forum

I fully support the idea of a separate forum! It would be a great improvement if we (the users) get feedback and are informed on what to expect in coming releases.
  18. WISHLIST

It would be even nicer if the Copy Tag just copied the tag to the clipboard, so that it can be pasted in another person's record. The current function works different from other Windows applications. Windows users are accustomed to the Cut, Copy and Paste sequences. Another inconvenient quality of the current inplementation is that the copy action, while it adds a tag to the person's data, changes the last edited date. Many times, the tag is intended for another person and, therefore, the principal has to be changed (if possible). So, to simplify it's use my proposal is this: The Copy Tag (in the Edit menu and on the right mouse click) copies the tag to the clipboard, a the (new) Paste Tag (in the Edit menu and on the right mouse click) inserts it in every current record.
  19. Does anyone know why it is not possible to merge individuals in different data sets. This would save a lot of time when synchronizing projects! (Refer to How to sync data of a replicated project?, Merging chances from multiple researchers and What is the best way to merge projects, Excluding the duplicates.)
  20. Additional request: 4) Make it possible to save the results of the Check for Duplicates process in a focus group. Reason: the check process can take a long time on large projects. (In a project of about 15000 people on a modern pc, it may take over 1 hour). When it is possible to save the resulting people in a focus group, one can examine the duplicates, print a list, and/or decide to merge individuals later on. In the current implemenation (TMG v6.05), the results are lost.
  21. Robin, Thanks, I see. Do you know why this isn't possible in the Project Explorer? When using a report to examine and edit the filtered people, I have to find them in the explorer one by one. Or I must raise a special flag as secondary output. It looks very unpractical to me.
  22. I too get the same problem now and then. Then, after closing TMG (v6.05) and restarting, the Welcome window shows (which is normally switched off). The project (> 4 MB) exists for a long time with the same project (file) name and further works OK.
  23. When editing a language (I estimate that a language has much more than 10.000 entries) a find possibility can hardly be missed. I hope that Wholly Genes will implement this simple thing soon. Did you ever edit a language and do you have the same wish? Please, react.
  24. Hello Vera, I do not agree. Let me summarize my objections against the current possibilities: 1) The Find function is not documented in the Help and is not accessible via the TMG menus. Thus, it does not exist for the normal user. 2) The function works “in the dark”: it does not provide feedback to the user. (E.g. accidentally pressing the “x” key seems to block your entire system for a while.) This differs from the way a normal user interface works, even in TMG. 3) The Find does only search for strings at the beginning of the fields. As you mentioned yourself, many strings start with special characters. And, if you do not know these, you will never find the string following them. 4) There is no Find Next possibility. 5) The main purpose of the edit function is to change the translation of the English texts in the left column. But the current Find function does not look in the translations that are in the right column. The Find function I am looking for does not need advanced features (case match, etc). A simple Find will do, like in the Master Place List or Master Event List windows. Finally, I am convinced that the current implementation does not satisfy any user who needs to translate and/or correct the language strings. But the major group of users will not need the translation function at all.
  25. In a project I have a data set 1 with more that 15.000 people. The same project has a second data set 2, imported from another researcher, that contains about 95% the same people, but several of these (about 750) are not in set 1 yet. My first question is how to find out which people are in data set 2 and not in data set 1? (Use some filter?) My second question is how I can merge these from data set 2 to set 1, without copying them one by one. (I'm using TMG v6.05 and I am aware of the merge fundamentals and the various tips by Terry.) Any help is appreciated.
