  1. Sorry for speaking in acronyms. TMG = The Master Genealogist TNG = The Next Generation of Genealogy Website building (http://lythgoes.net/genealogy/software.php) While I have found TMG to be one of the best interfaces for storing and recording family tree data, TNG is an amazing web interface tool (at least in my opinion) -Fred
  2. GEDCOM is a precisely defined standard. There are only certain specific tags used in the Lineage-Linked GEDCOM standard and what may be placed in them is very specific for each. There is no PHOT tag in GEDCOM. You can map a TMG tag into one of the very limited number of pre-defined GEDCOM tags in the manner you outlined, or you can (and should) do what Jim suggested for custom TMG tags that do not map into a standard GEDCOM tag. That is the purpose of the predefined GEDCOM general purpose EVEN tag. I will insert here my standard "rant" that GEDCOM is a very limited and old standard and many of the more valuable features of modern genealogy software systems like TMG simply cannot be expressed in this old standard. Are you really sure you want or need to export to GEDCOM? Michael, Unfortunately, I use TMG for my primary database, but I have chosen to use TNG for my web interface. My only connection between the two is GEDCOM. -Fred
  3. Thanks for the advice Jim. I will try to move this tag out of the history group later tonight and see how it works :-)
  4. Thanks everyone for the great advice; however, this has led to a new issue for me. Last night I created a tag type of 'Photo' as suggested, and then I was able to add multiple witnesses to an exhibit. This all seemed to work fine. The problem is getting this to export to GEDCOM. For the 'Photo' Tag Type that I created, there is an area which help defines how the tag will output to GEDCOM. For this example, let's say I set the tag to PHOT (although I tried several things here). When I exported a GEDCOM file, the tag was no where to be found in the file. I have ensured that the tag type 'Photo' is selected for export in export settings, but no PHOT tag shows up in the GEDCOM. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a setting somewhere that I have not set? Thanks,
  5. Thanks for the answer Jim. Is there a proper way to formally request this as a feature in the next version?
  6. Is there an easy way to add a photo to multiple people at once? I have quite a few group photos that when I add I have to go through the process of adding the photo, description, and caption over and over again for each person in the photo. It can be quite cumbersome. Am I missing something easy? or is this a true feature request? Ideally there would be a multi-pick list where I could add the photo to as many people as necessary at the same time.
  7. Jim Thank you for your response; however, I must quibble. I have tested this ‘external exhibit’ tree maintenance issue over and over again in both 6.07 and 6.12. In fact, after your response, I went back to version 6.12 and tried it again. V6.12 restores the external exhibit directory tree perfectly into the folder that it was being maintained. (In my case, I keep my exhibits in c:\My Documents\Media … although I am not convinced that it makes a difference) Some other things that I tried: - If you restore a TMG v6 backup file (with external exhibits) into TMG v7, then it will copy all of the exhibits into a single directory. However, it will leave the original path of each exhibit file alone. (Meaning that it will point to the correct place in the external directory structure that I have set up even though it made a copy into its exhibit folder) -If you backup a TMG v7 file (with external exhibits), it will copy all of the external exhibits into the backup file. Then when restored, it will put them into one ‘exhibits’ folder (which has been flattened), and all of the external paths that the exhibits had will now point to the one exhibit folder. (And of course, all of the directory information to the external files has been lost) -If you backup a TMG v7 file (without external exhibits), then it will leave all of the paths for each file alone once restored (as you had mentioned in your post). The user must then be extremely careful during backups to never turn the ‘backup external exhibits’ flag on. If they do, they will be extremely sad during the next restore. Now, it seems to me that this is a bug, and it ought to be looked at. I know that you said that the code is not different in this from v6.12 to v7; however it must be.
  8. I keep all of my media in external exhibits which are organized into directories for each person. When I use version 6, if I do a backup (external exhibits included) and restore to another computer, the restore process will keep the directory structure of the external exhibits. In version 7, after a backup and restore, it puts all of the external exhibits into one folder. Is anyone else having this issue? Am I missing a setting somewhere? -fraymel
