IMPORTING from LEGACY 8
Virginia Blakelock replied to lobsterwoman's topic in The Master Genealogist v8
Hello - Do not first make an empty project. The opening screen in TMG has an option for Import (scroll down the list to see GEDCOM and Legacy). I believe Legacy v8 may have a different file extension, so you may want to start with a GEDCOM. Once you have the import, use the Help file for assistance with sorting out the details - or ask your questions here. Virginia (ex-lobsterwoman . Pulled up many a lobster pot (trap) in Casco Bay). -
Unable to Print Journal Report in WordPerfect
Virginia Blakelock replied to TPG's topic in The Master Genealogist v8
Try resetting the Journal report to its defaults (use the button under the configuration name). Also try it without sources. Virginia -
Chronological ordering of tags in details
Virginia Blakelock replied to Danny Bayne's topic in The Master Genealogist v8
Danny - If you are using TMG v8 - Rightclick in the Details view / Show columns / Sort Date. You have the option to show either Date or Sort Date or Both. If you are using TMG v7 - Go to Preferences / Tag Box where you have the option to display either Date or Sort Date. Virginia -
Error when attempting to delete trial copy
Virginia Blakelock replied to davesearching's topic in The Master Genealogist v8
Dave - If you are using Win7 Pro, this MIcrosoft article may apply: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2564571 Let us know if that helps. Virginia -
Family Group Sheets - change in report appearance
Virginia Blakelock replied to bluedog's topic in The Master Genealogist v8
Debbie - I am just another user like you - so can't speak for TMG. If you are looking at the Sample reports on the TMG web site, the FGS is the old v7 version. The example FGS there has not been updated to v8. My example with the gray fill and white lines (options on the Miscellaneous tab in the FGS report) - as shown in the screenshot earlier in this thread - is not that different from v7. I do not know what functionality you have lost. Virginia -
When you make your backup, does your backup path in the Backup wizard match the backup path for that specific project in Preferences / Current Project Options / Advanced - and is that a valid current path? Are you including External Exhibits in your backup? Virginia

TMG v7 for Windows 8
Virginia Blakelock replied to Kathy McCubbing's topic in Older Products and Versions
Joyce Ann - I'm not sure what you mean 'transfer v8 into v7'. You can open or restore a v7 project in TMG v8. You cannot open or restore a v8 project in TMG v7. Once you have opened a v7 project in v8, it is converted to v8 and you cannot open it again in v7. You can have both TMG v7 and v8 installed on your computer. They coexist, and I recommend you keep v7 until you are sure you have all your v7 customizations - like toolbars or layouts - moved to v8. Did you look in your download folder for the v8 installer (tmg8setup.exe)? If you cannot find the v8 installer, you can download the free trial version and enter your registration information. Your license allows you to install v8 on both your laptop and your computer as long as they are not being used at the same time. Virginia -
copying person from one data set to another
Virginia Blakelock replied to Muriel's topic in The Master Genealogist v8
Marney - To be clear - the son appears in two datasets - one dataset of his mother's line and another dataset of his father's line. Are these two datasets in the same project? Now, for your fan chart, you want a dataset which contains the son plus the lines of both parents? I wonder if the Help topic 'Extract from a DataSet' (in Help under Dataset) would do what you want. This copies the people and their records and retains the original dataset. Virginia -
Endnotes/footnotes on family group sheet
Virginia Blakelock replied to debbieshields's topic in The Master Genealogist v8
Debbie - I do not see that problem using Endnotes. I am using embedded Memos and Endnotes > Unique. Try the report without the researcher info at the end. That seems to trigger a new page for the Endnotes. Virginia -
Family Group Sheets - change in report appearance
Virginia Blakelock replied to bluedog's topic in The Master Genealogist v8
Debbie - Your options are for line color and fill color - not lines selectively, so you can't duplicate the v7 version. The gray fill in the example below comes close to the v7 FGS. Let me know if you would like the settings for either of the charts. Virginia -
First, make sure the printer is installed: In TMG: File > Printer setup > Install PDF printer (button at top of page). Also try the fix here. Virginia

Handling Gay Families and Transgender Individuals
Virginia Blakelock replied to philfreund's topic in The Master Genealogist v8
Phil - You will find many discussions on documenting gender change, gay marriage, civil unions, etc. on the TMG mailing list. Use the search engine here. For example, try the search term: transgender. Virginia -
Jenny - There is no 'offending Zip' file. You can get that error message when you backup directly to an external drive - like a thumb drive. If that is your case, make the backup to your local drive and then copy the backup .sqz file to your external drive. Virginia

Virginia Blakelock replied to Elizabeth's topic in The Master Genealogist v8
Elizabeth - Right-click in the Details view, and on that menu select 'Show Item tips on the Person View.' Virginia -
Reporing place information from an other event tag
Virginia Blakelock replied to Graham J's topic in The Master Genealogist UK Edition
Graham - What information do you want in this report - the info in the sentences and/or the data in the place fields? Do you want a tabular report or a narrative report? Do you use Witnesses for the people listed in the Census or do you use Copy Tag to give each person in the census their own census tag? Virginia -
Ahnentafel generation is crashing TMG v7
Virginia Blakelock replied to mmeadows30's topic in Older Products and Versions
Martin - Are you getting an error message? Did you install to the default locations? If you had a copy of v8 on your computer before - like the public beta - it may find a vestige from that and balk on installing again. Let us know if that is the case; there is a workaround. Virginia -
TMG v7 for Windows 8

Kathy - I'm glad that solved the problem. You may want to check out some the new features in v8 here. Virginia -
TMG v7 for Windows 8
Virginia Blakelock replied to Kathy McCubbing's topic in Older Products and Versions
Is your computer 64-bit? You cannot send TMG v7 reports to a word processor on a 64-bit machine with Windows7. I expect it is the same problem with Windows8. You can download the v8 trial version and see if your reports work in that version. TMG v7 and v8 are independent and you can run them both on your computer. Virginia -
Ahnentafel generation is crashing TMG v7
Virginia Blakelock replied to mmeadows30's topic in Older Products and Versions
Martin - Is your computer 64-bit? If so, TMG v7 will not be able to send reports to a word processor. TMG v8 has a new report writer that fixes this problem. You can download the free trial version and try it out. Note you can run both v7 and v8 on the same computer. They are independent of each other. Virginia -
Age of Death Report
Virginia Blakelock replied to Lance O'Riley's topic in The Master Genealogist UK Edition
Lance - You can also display the age at events (including Death) in the Details view in your layout. Right-click in the Details view and select Show Columns / Age. Virginia -
Dubious or doubtful ancestors
Virginia Blakelock replied to JohnR's topic in The Master Genealogist v8
John - One way - Create a Flag for the people in a dubious line. Use the Focus Group to corral the people in the dubious line. Save the Focus Group. Use the Secondary Output of the List of People report (Focus Group) to set the flag for those people. Create a screen accent based on that flag setting. In the report options select Fonts and Colors > Honor screen Accent color definitions. Attached is an example of the Descendant Indented Chart showing a dubious line. Virginia -
Bill - If the project on the laptop opens or if you have v7 on another computer, you can get the registration number from the Trouble Report. In v7, go to Help / Technical Support / Trouble Report (button at lower left). Your registration number and email address you used when purchasing the program are listed at the top of the trouble report. Failing that, you can contact Tech Support for your registration info. Virginia
-
Note it is listed immediately following 'Dissertation (Microfilmed)' in the Source Types list, as: 'E-mail message'. You may be looking further down the list for Email - without the hyphen. Virginia

Changeover to V8- Cant produce a descendant indent chart
Virginia Blakelock replied to Rosanna's topic in The Master Genealogist v8
Rosanna - The different colored lines at a smaller resolution could be the monitor. Do you have the latest graphics driver for that monitor? Re more letters per line. I assume you are using the default 8pt Arial font. That is about as small as you would want to go. You can set the margins smaller - to .5 for left and right. You can get several more lines of text in your report with some changes in Preferences. Starting with the default settings: Page Options / Graphics line: remove from header and footer Page Numbers - none Margins - .5 top and bottom Less researcher info at end of report; date only perhaps Fonts / Title: change to 10B (it is 14B by default).
