  1. Exhibits tied to events

Bob, Shown where? The event tag appears for each person in the person view. The exhibit is available from the tag no matter which person you are viewing when you open it. Or do you mean something else?
  2. Handling PDF documents

Bob, Well, it's hard to say since you don't say why you are doing this, but I can't think of a way in which this is a good approach. If your intent is to make then readily available for reference by viewing them from TMG, I think it's a poor idea. First, it takes too many clicks to find an exhibit if you have very many of them. Then TMG itself can't display PDFs, but rather calls Windows to find an application to do so, just as would happen if you accessed them yourself from Windows Explorer. Even if you used an image format instead of a PDF the viewer in TMG is not very good for examining documents, in my view. If the purpose is to organize them for finding later, I think it's much better to organize them directly in a file system using Windows folders. If your intent is to have them display in TMG reports, it's definitely a bad idea because PDFs can't be included in TMG reports. Even if you use an image format instead of PDFs I don't see how it can work. Most images would have to be full page sized to be viewable, so more than a few of them would totally overrun a report. If your intent is to display them in a website created with Second Site, you are on the right path but PDF is a poor format for web viewing. Use of JPG, GIF, or PNG are all better choices for web viewing. If you are member of the Arlington RUG, you might look at my article on this topic in the latest newsletter for more details.
  3. Strategy for Preserving TMG

My understanding of the problem with opening large Word files is a limit on the number of footnotes or endnotes, which seems to be not documented anywhere. Solutions that have been said to help including creating the file as a rich text file rather than as a Word file, opening and saving it with LibreOffice, and using "Unique Endnotes" instead of real endnotes. I've not tried these so I can't speak to their effectiveness but they might be worth trying if you run into that limit. BTW, the error message produced by Word when that limit is exceeded is totally misleading and gives no clue what the issue is, so it is easy to miss what the issue really is. I did some experimentation when the new report writer was built for TMG8 and as I recall it allowed Word to open somewhat larger files than under the previous report writer, but there was still a limit.
  4. Download Data to new computer

Buzz, I think my article Moving Data to New Computer or Version should help. The .pjc file is a small text file that contains key information about your TMG database, but none of the data. The data is contained in 30+ files with the same name but various extensions. The .sqz files are backups - that is they contain copies of all the other files compressed into a single file in ZIP format.
  5. BJ, I'm confused. You said at the start that the issue was you installed a new printer, but now you say you aren't trying to print at all but send the report to Word. What do you see the printer having to do with output to Word? In any case, Help says about use of Word 2013, which I assume also applies to later versions: Note: If you are using Microsoft Word 2013, you should choose the Rich Text Format (RTF) file type to save the report rather than the Microsoft Word (DOC) file type. This tabular report is not compatible with the table structure used in Microsoft Word 2013.
  6. TRansfer TMG v8

    You're welcome.
  7. Unable to unlock TMG 9.05 in Windows 10

See my article for how to fix this.
  8. TRansfer TMG v8

You can't transfer the program from one computer to another. You need to install the program using the correct installer, then transfer your data. See the article Moving Data to New Computer or Version on my website for details.
  9. TMG 9 Purchase

Les, License keys were still available at last report from two sources. See my article on The Future for TMG Users for details.
  10. Event witnesses not part of tree

Bob, Then I wouldn't. Just enter their names in the memo if you want them included.
  11. Event witnesses not part of tree

Bob, What is the problem with having unrelated persons in the database? I don't have a lot of them. Generally if a person involved with and event isn't known to be related I don't enter them, but just put their name in the Memo if I think it's important. But I do sometimes enter people who figure largely in the family, or who have a similar surname and I think they may prove to be related. When I do I mark them with a "Connected" flag, and use that flag to drive a distinctive color with Accents. Creating and initially populating the flag is described in my article Creating a "Connected" Flag. I then put it on the Add Person screen so I can mark newly entered people as I add them.
  12. Printing Charts

VCF does not produce an "veryone" chart. Depending on the number of people and their relationships, this can quickly get totally out of control. If the number of people you want to include is reasonable you may be able to create one by creating a number of charts with various groups then combine them by expanding the size of your "base" chart and copying and pasting the others into it.
  13. Creating a List of Birth Events

Chris, Sure. Start with the List of People Report. Use a filter of: # of Birth Group tags ... = Equals ... 0 ... End In Options, on the Output Columns tab, specify ID#, Name, and whatever else you would find useful.
  14. Troublesome Issues

You use File > Open from the main screen. From the welcome screen use Select. If that's giving you the error message there is an issue with the file. Hopefully Jim will have some idea about how to deal with that.
  15. Troublesome Issues

You can't Restore a .pjc file - you have to Open it.
  16. Gedcom export provides incomplete file

Dave, The most common reason for incomplete exports is that the GEDCOM is being created in a folder which being synchronized by a cloud service. There are also reports that some anti-virus programs can interfere with creating the file.
  17. Deleting sources

Jim, I thought LuAnn wanted to keep some of the sources that had been imported but not cited. But on re-reading her post it look like not, so no need for that step. I was pretty sure that un-cited sources would get dropped by copying to a new Project, as well as any unused custom Source Types, Tag Types, and Styles. I had not realized that history tags are lost. All these are only issues if they exist in the Project, which we don't know. So, LuAnn, you have options to evaluate.
  18. Deleting sources

LuAnn, I suspect you could do it by citing all the uncited sources you wish to keep, say by citing them or a temporary person you enter, then using the Secondary Output of the List of People report to copy everyone in your Project to a new Project. I believe the new Project will contain only sources that have been cited. Is that right Jim? This will probably re-number all your people and sources, and may have other intended consequences. It may be more trouble than just manually removing the unwanted sources.
  19. Ralph, You want events in which a specific source is cited, and that is the only source cited? Right? Paul has got you on the right track. You can't specify from the List of Citations report how many other citations there are to that tag. The List of events report will get you mostly there. Use a filter of: Any Citation... Src Number = 123 AND Number of Citations = 1 END where "123" is the source number. Or you could put the code [?] there. However, that will only get you citations to Event Tags. That misses Name Tags and Relationship Tags. The list of Names report will only get you part way there, with the filter: # of Citations = 1 End There is no report for Relationship tags. Another approach is to use the List of Citations report in Columnar format, and include in the output: Linked Event; # of Citations, and Linked Name; # of Citations You could sort these two to the top and then easily see the ones you are looking for. There is no such option for Relationship tags I'm afraid.
  20. To find all Citations to a specific Source, choose "Filtered Group" in the upper part of the Report Definition Screen. Then Add a filter like: Source Number = [?] END When you run the report a screen will open asking you to enter the source number. Either type it in, or use the binoculars button to search for it.
  21. Getting re-started with TMG

Mary, First, ignore everything but the last version. The "upgrade" refers to pricing, not to the program itself. Next, ignore the disks you have, as they most likely are not the last update of the version. Instead, download the current installer from this website, at http://whollygenes.swmirror.com/tmg9setup.exe Enter your name, email address, and serial number exactly as you find them shown on the packing slip. If you are using Windows 8 or Windows 10, refer to the directions for entering the serial number on my website to avoid repeated requests to unlock the program.
  22. can TMG v7 restore a v8 or v9 backup

Josie, No, you cannot restore a backup made in TMG 8 or 9 with TMG 7. However the fix for the "expired trial version" after updating to Windows 10 is simple. It is described in my article on updating in the section on Multiple Unlock Requests. There is no need to do a new install.
  23. Transfer data into The Master Genealogist v9.05

Arthur, GEDCOM has no means of indicating the type of source, so TMG on import assigns them all the default source type, which is a book. There is no option but to individually change those that are not to a more suitable type. You will likely find that when you do much of the information about each source is in the wrong source element, so you will have to edit them to get the source notes to make sense.
  24. No Copies of TMG V9

Nick, There are at least two sources that so far as I know still have unlock codes for TMG 9 available. See my article here.
