  1. I think the question you have to answer for yourself is "Why am I putting my file on the website?"

Once you are clear on that, the answers to questions like who should you include, and what information about them should you include, become more clear. Some things to consider:

    - What do you want to do about living people?

    - Do you want direct line only, or to include others? If so, who?

    - Do you want bare facts - birth, marriage, death, or more? How much more?

    - Does your TMG data make use of features like witnesses, roles, multiple-principal tags beyond marriage tags, split Memos and split CDs? Those all implact the way your data is exported, and how it will appear when imported.

    - Do you want to include sources?

I'm not familar with the site you mention, but I'd supect there are some constraints on it that impact your choices.

Thanks Terry. what I'd like to do, based on other GEDCOMs that are posted, is just list my paternal side: name, birth/death dates, spouses and children. If to complicated, I could drop children. any tips?

  2. I just received my DNA results from FamilytreeDNA and got my personal webpage. I am getting ready to take the next step and upload my first GEDCOM file (may also do it at YSearch).

Having never created one before, and given the nature of the sites I will be uploading to, what steps should I take in creating the GEDCOM? What info should I include? Exclude? What pitfalls should I avoid? What other concerns should I be aware of?

Forgot to mention that I am using TMG 6.12.

    Thanks.

  3. I thougt I saw this topic addressed but could not find it.

Is there a way to generate a list of exhibits in TMG?

I am re-organizing my pics and docs on my hard to make them more managable and want ot re-link the ones used in TMG to the new location.

    Thanks

  4. You cite it exactly as you would with data viewed at the National Archives (with the roll number etc.), except that you would add a line something to the effect "as viewed online at Ancestry.com" to make it clear where you viewed the record. To view the roll number, look at the results page for the individual (see attached image for an example).

    Much thanks.

    Bob

  5. I found what Ancestry.com refers to as a civil war pension index for one of my ancestors. However, I was surprised at the lack of information contained in it. It just lists the deceased, the widow's name, the unit the deceased served in, date of filing, application number, and certificate number.

Is this all the information I would normally expect to find? Or do I not have what I think I have?

    Thanks.

  6. Bob,

When you see the son or daughter duplicated from the parent view ie son-bio tag appears twice, is one of the tags marked as primary (*) and the other non-primary (no *)?

I have seen this in someone else's database and we were able to fix the problem by deleting the non-primary son-bio tag. The list of events report has options that will allow you to search for any other occurences.

Doesn't answer the question though - how did it happen? I've tried everything I can think of and haven't been able to replicate the issue.

    Cheers,

    Neil Bradley

Yes, only one of the tags was primary. I discovered my problem. When I went to add the child, a screen popped up asking for the other parent - which I misread as asking for THE parent - and added the father's number (again). This resulted in the duplicate child.

When I finally learned how to read, I skipped this screen and everything returned to as it should be.

    Thanks

  7. TMG 6.12/winXP SP2

I am trying to add children to a father (mother unknown), using add son/daughter. Makes no differenece if I use the icon on the tool bar or use the drop down menu, the following occurs:

When in the father person view, the child is listed twice, with identical data. In the child view, the correct father is identified. When I delete one of the duplicates (from the father view), I get a message saying that this child has no primary parent and the duplicate disappears. When I click on the -bio tag, the correct father/child relationship is displayed. However, when I go to the child's person view, no parent is listed.

I hope I explained this clearly. What is happening and how can I correct this?

  8. It has been stated in this forum that one of the benefits of using the original (older) PDF writer in TMG was that it could be used by other programs. However, I have never been able to get this to work. While I can print ot PDF reports from TMG, when I try selecting the 'printer' from other programs I get an error message and the print process aborts (sorry, I didn't copy the error message). This has happened before and after installing the latest PDF driver (per Bob's suggestion, I have both versions installed and only tried printing using the older one). Does anyone have any ideas why I cannot print PDF outside of TMG.

I have Win/XP, SP2, TMG 6.12, and have tried printing to PDF from Wordperfect 12.

    Thanks

  9. Thanks - I can see how useful this would be. I'm tired of having to make my file names descriptive and dislike typing info on the image via photo editing. I do have a couple of questions.

    1. If I understand, the text is not displayed when viewed through TMG, or a slide show created with other photo editing software, correct? (I have XP).

    2. This will work even if the image is scanned instead taken with a digicam?

    Thanks
