I have the same response as Terry, I also do not know of a simple way to do this. As Terry suggested, I also would use a List of Event report, probably filtered for Birth Group events, and then sort by Date. Two birth events on the same date would give you candidates, but still would require directly examining these people's data.

Once you find these people, do mark them in some way for future use. Rather than use the Multiple Birth Flag, I have chosen to add a custom Role to the Birth tag type which I call "multiple". If Fred and Sam are twins, then Fred is made a Witness with this Role to Sam's Birth tag, and vice versa. Then I can filter for any Birth event with a Role of "multiple". I did not lose any data by doing the GEDCOM swap.

You may think you did not lose any data, but you almost certainly did. If you exported to GEDCOM from a TMG 9.05, even if you used its enhanced GEDCOM export option, there are things you undoubtedly lost. You probably did not lose any people, or their primary BMDB data, but if you had any data beyond these bare bones facts you probably lost it.

As noted from my previous post, I intend something similar to you in sticking with TMG for quite some time.

However, with respect to several of the competing products now on the market, I am not sure it is fair to characterize all their underlying data models as based on the GEDCOM standard. Certainly many of these programs have a strong focus on both importing and exporting GEDCOM, just as TMG did, but I believe? several now have internal data models which have little to do with the GEDCOM model. This can especially be seen by those programs with ever more improving import of TMG data directly using the TMG database files and completely bypassing GEDCOM.

But all that aside, with such an existing investment in TMG as you mention I agree with your current approach, especially at my advanced age.

As Terry notes, you probably have installed the US version on one computer when you really wanted the UK version. To really keep the two computers in sync, you may wish to uninstall the US version and install the UK version, or vice versa, so the two computers match.

Jim is giving you excellent advice but I see two issues.

First, excluding only the one file tmg.exe will not help the problem. You have to exclude the entire folder which contains all the many files which constitute your project(s). These are the files which Real-time Scanning can interfere with when TMG in is the midst of writing to one or more of those files. Further, this exclusion will only prevent "future" damage to those project files. If the tag file names still exist when you restore your project, then those definitions are already within that restored project.

By the way, disabling Real-time Scanning may not be enough. Some users have reported that the Microsoft OneDrive facility is now enabled by default in new Win10 machines. You should also ensure that the TMG project folders are excluded from monitoring by that software.

Second, if the names of your tags are "Census 19011" and "Census 190111", I know of only one way those names could have been created in a project by TMG. These names were likely created when you "imported" tag types into a project, twice. In both cases I would guess you chose the option to import and not overwrite even if the tag type is different but the name already exists The first import would contain a tag type of the name "Census 1901" but would find an existing tag type of that same name "Census 1901". It would import that tag type but rename it by incrementing to "Census 19011". Now you do a second import of tag types which contains a tag type named "Census 19011". Again it would find an existing tag type of that same name "Census 19011". TMG would import that tag type but now rename it by incrementing to "Census 190111".

Finally, I would look on machine A, verify that these tag type names do not exist in that project, and make a new backup of that project. Then restore that new backup on machine B. That should bring things back in sync.

I do want to be able to show my lines separately, via a link. I remember seeing examples that do this but have not come anywhere near on figuring our how to do that.

If I understand this separate issue, this is usually accomplished using one or more Flags which identify whether a person is a member of a particular line. I highly recommend starting with Terry's discussion about Flags:

When you want to change values of a Flag for many people at once you can use the List of People report to change the value of a Flag for all people that meet the criteria you specify. Terry has given you good advice on your current question. However, there is yet another option you may wish to consider, especially if your preferred output is intended to be Second Site. This could be in addition to, or instead of, linking your exhibits to the Residence tags.

You don't mention what data entry convention you have chosen for entering addresses of specific buildings in TMG, especially with respect to your Residence Tags. Two methods are common, each with their advantages and disadvantages:

• Only entering the city/town etc. as the "Place" to link that tag to that more inclusive Master Place List entry, with the building address simply entered in the memo.
• Entering the complete building address in the Addressee and/or Detail fields of the tag to link to that separate Master Place List entry for each building.

If you choose the latter, then there will be a separate Master Place List entry for each building. In that case you could take advantage of the TMG ability to link an exhibit directly to a Master Place List entry. When you create a Second Site set of web pages for your project, you can optionally choose to have Second Site automatically create an Index of all the places which have a separate Master Place List entry, and to embed their exhibits as part of their Index entry. Now each Second Site Place Index entry which has an exhibit will have a special icon next to that entry. Clicking on the icon will display the exhibit.

One wonders why the 'multiple monitor ' option is even in TMG if it does not work.

Only the developers might know. Could possibly have been a placeholder for a feature that was never implemented, and now never will be.

I regularly use two monitors with TMG. But I don't think it works as one would think it works.

First, I have found no value to the Preferences // Program Options // Other setting of "Allow multiple monitors". I leave it off, yet use two monitors with no problems.

Next, from the MS Windows point of view TMG has only one window. TMG's separate (sub)window panels such as Details, Siblings, Flags, etc. will only display within the one main TMG window. You cannot move them outside that main window. For this reason I designed a layout where the main TMG window fills one monitor, and I use the second monitor for other purposes, like searching the web or reviewing a report, etc.

Finally, I have not found the MS Windows feature of "maximizing" the TMG main window on a monitor of any use. I simply manually moved the TMG main window and its edges to fill the monitor of choice, then resized TMG's various sub-windows within that main window, and saved this layout. That way when TMG starts with its Welcome screen it will display on the monitor of choice.

Again don't forget that once you define the TMG main window and its sub-windows location and sizes the way you like, you must save this Layout using the TMG menu item View // Layouts // Manage Layouts.

Just my way of using two monitors, but I hope this gives you ideas,

This issue has been discussed before. This recurring issue is about using a genealogy program, whose purpose is to document genetic relationships, but then trying to document family/social relationships. TMG assumes, and enforces, the Primary "parents" of a child being one male and one female and the program is designed to assume it is a genetic relationship.

See especially the discussion here about Same Sex couples. As I mentioned there, I recommend creating two separate "people" in the TMG database, one person before the change and one after. For details see that topic and also my discussion of two approaches to recording Adoption data in my on-line book here.

While for some reason I always knew that the pair of characters '||' were treated special in a TMG filter, thanks to your question I discovered I have never indicated that in my on-line book. I have now added that fact, and the example of searching for this pair of characters both concerning tag memos and citation details and memos. For citation details and memos see the Source Data Entry section of the "Source Guide" chapter. The fifth paragraph mentions the ability to split both Citation Details and Citation Memos, and the footnote now indicates how to search for such.

I suppose you could filter the List of Citations for the bars but I'm not sure how you specify that. Hopefully someone else will offer a suggestion on that.

 

The pair of characters of '||' are recognized in a TMG filter as a special case, so you do not need to escape each of these characters when entered as a pair. For your purposes you would run a List of Citations report with the simple filter of:

Citation Detail // Contains // || // END

Be sure to define appropriate output columns to easily find each specific event and citation. I would recommend at least the fields:

Linked Record; Subject1; ID

Linked Record; Date

Linked Record; Tag Type

Source Number

Citation Detail

But you may wish to add other output columns in the report to help you find these citations. I generally sort the report first by "Linked Record; Subject1; ID" and then by "Linked Record; Date". That lets me go through the tags person by person, with finding the various tags with these citation details by date order.

The concept to keep in mind is that when you link multiple people to the same tag, each with their own role, there remains only one tag. The current person view for everyone linked will show a view of that same one tag, but with some indication of how the current person is linked to that one tag. The default view simply informs you whether they were linked as a Principal or a Witness. Terry's suggestion changes the definition for that one tag type of how TMG indicates the current person's linkage to any one tag of that tag type by showing their linked role name instead. But each person linked does not have their own copy of this tag. They only somehow show a linkage to that one tag.

The TMG-L list on Rootsweb seems to again be having problems.

You may have noticed that there have been no posts to TMG-L for two weeks. It seems it is now not accepting posts from any users, including myself and the list administrator. Rootsweb is still having problems with several of the email lists it moved to its new servers. Some lists work, some lists only partially work, and some don't work at all. Some users (such as myself) have been unable to post to the TMG-L list for over a month since they made their hardware change.

Constance Chappell Horne, TMG-L List Administrator, agreed to have me post the latest reply she got today, October 11, 2016, from Rootsweb about this issue.

I certainly agree it is very "unfortunate" they do not have a time frame when TMG-L will again be available and that corrective actions are currently "on hold".

Until this is fixed, TMG-L users may wish to post their issues here.

The filename of the installer should be something like "tmg9setup.exe". It will start with "tmg" and will end with "setup.exe" with the version number in between. Hopefully that is what you found. Save it somewhere safe along with your unlock code, as well as the user name and email address associated with that code.

First, to tell what version you have installed of TMG itself, when TMG is open click on the "Help" menu. Then choose the very last menu item of "About The Master Genealogist". That will open a window showing the version/subversion of the running program.

Perhaps I am misunderstanding you? Are you trying to backup and restore the actual TMG "program" from one computer to another? If so, you cannot do that. You must actually "install" TMG on a computer using the appropriate installer for the appropriate version/subversion.

However, if you are using TMG itself to do a backup of a "Project" on one computer, and then using TMG to restore that "Project" on the other computer, that is a different issue. Guessing from your error message, I will assume this latter is what you are trying to do?

From the error you mention I am guessing that your old computer has been updated to version "v 9.05.0000". However, if you used a disk to install TMG on your new computer you probably installed the earlier version "v 9.00.0000". You cannot take a Project which has been backed up in 9.05 and then try to restore it with an older version of TMG.

If this is the case, then you need to install the final version "v 9.05.0000" on your new computer. Since WhollyGenes stopped supporting TMG over a year ago, one place I know of that you can find the latest installers is on the ROOTS Users Group of Arlington, VA web site:

I suggest you download the final appropriate installer and save it on your own disk for the future.

If you already have v 9.00 installed, running the final v 9.05 installer on your new computer will simply completely replace the old version with that final version.

As I said, web access to the list Archives is not available yet. However, if you are a registered member of the list you can post emails to the list. And all registered members will receive a copy of these posts by email. It is just the viewing of the Archives on the web by anyone which is still unavailable.

The TMG-L and other Rootsweb lists are receiving and sending messages again, but the Archives for most lists are still not working. Ancestry.com has not indicated any expected recovery date.

(So come on down to New Mexico!! This week we has the first decent bit of rain since December.

Please reconsider. External image exhibits are definitely the highly recommended approach, and internal image exhibits have been known to cause problems.
