There are two possibilities...
1) The backup configurations on the two systems are set up differently and one backup contains something the other doesn't.
or
2) The cluster size for the file systems on the two systems differ. This would show the backup files differing in size even when the data in the backups is identical.
If the backup configurations are identical, the data backed up on the two systems will be identical. The bottom line is that the difference in filesize is not really something to be concerned about.

I was recently purchased a new computer that, unfortunately, comes with Windows Vista. As I was expecting, TMG v5 does not work with it. When I try to open a project, it complains about Tlist v6.5 not being compatible with the operating system. Does anybody know of a workaround for this besides upgrading to TMG v6?The only work-around is to click by that message every time that you start TMG.
There will be a number of issues trying to run TMG5 as a legacy application under WinVista. v6.12 corrects most of those issues. v6.12 still has a couple of minor issues but nothing that keeps you from using it under WinVista.
I would look at the TMG v6 WinVista topic.
http://www.whollygenes.com/forums201/index...?showtopic=5882
Most of the problems brought up for pre-v6.12 TMG will apply to running TMG5 under WinVista. The suggestions in the topic and in the WinVista PDF document apply to TMG5.

Please don't hijack the topics. I've moved this to its own topic.
I have tried for days to install TMG v.6 on my PC running WinXP Home Edition without luck.No one has come up with an answer yet.
My warning bells also start ringing when a supplier suggest turning off the anti-virus program, or any other protection programs, in connection with installing their application.Note that the current correct method to install the Nvidia video driver under WinVista includes turning off the av scanner. Sometimes, av scanners interfere with a program installation. However, that should not be the case with TMG.
...trying to uninstall this and/or other applications in order to get TMG installed is not an option.Agree. That is not a viable approach to the issue and no one should be trying that as a general approach.

You multimedia tour of TMG shows one slide with two detail windows side by side so you can compare directly between projects or have two instances of the same project. How do you do this?Exactly as you did it. Run a second instance of the program.

Microsoft has released a WinHelp update for Windows Vista (KB917607). This update will replace winhlp32.exe and will allow the help files used by TMG v6.12 to work under WinVista.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;DisplayLang=en
Be sure to select the correct WinHelp update version (x86 or x64) to download.
To clarify...
The x86 version is for 32-bit WinVista.
The x64 version is for 64-bit WinVista.

You asked:
1. When editing a tag in a person view, is there a way to close or step (saving if necessary) from the current tag...Sorry, I'm afraid not. I guess I'd never thought of that as I very seldom move from one tag to the next. I suppose one might in cleaning up an import, though.
2. Is there any easier way to preview a sentence than actually running a report? No, that's been suggested, but the official position is that the output of the sentence depends on a number of report settings as well as the context of the sentence in the report. There is a preview report button on the Reports toolbar, and you can add your own to the custom toolbar. These allow one-click reports, which help some.
3A. I understand that there is no way to automatically export witnesses as part of the gedcom export. However, has anyone worked out a way to export all of the information for an individual (including witness events) and then turn that intermediate file into a gedcom which includes all of the events for that person?I don't know. This would better be posted to the TMG6 forum, or better yet to the RootsWeb TMG list, which has a wider readership.
3B. Is there anyway to export the sentence to gedcom, rather than the raw memo field as a 2NOTE?I'm afraid not. GEDCOM specs don't recognize sentences, and Bob Velke is a stickler for following the specs.

TMG has no built-in web collaboration tool.
Several users have set up their own methods of doing web collaboration with TMG. If you inquire on the TMG mailing list, you might get a response as to how they did this.
http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/other/Software/TMG.html
If you can, please email me the answer...You provided no way for anyone to email you.

Looking at whether this is a known installer issue. The pattern suggests a third party application is involved. Can you list everything that was installed between when WinVista was installed and when the TMG install was attempted.

Peter,
The duplicated tags were in a contiguous block of 21 events (GNUM 10216 to 10244). (Some event numbers between the first and last have been deleted so the current block has 21 events rather than 29 events.)
The first tag entered was a Residence tag for ID#5722 and ID#5745.
The last tag entered was a Note tag for ID#1237.
Maybe you can figure out something unusual about when you entered that block of events.

Is mfc42.dll present in the c:\windows\system32 folder?
The Microsoft Foundation Class library including mfc42.dll has been included with all MS operating systems since Win98 (first edition). These files were installed on my current WinVista installation.
If it's not there, this would explain the error.
If not, you can download mfc42.dll (http://www.dll-download.net/mfc42.html) and add it to system32 although I suspect this is not enough by itself.
-
Export the date from Reunion to a GEDCOM file and import the GEDCOM file into TMG.
-
Did you try installing with your antivirus scanner turned off as suggested above?
I did a web search for the mfc42.dll issue but have not found another good idea yet.
-
Sheryl didn't respond to this suggestion in her topic.
You should not need to change the installer compatibility settings. If WinVista has an issue, it will just ask you to run the installer again.
You do not need to run the installer as administrator. You do need to run the program (but not the installer) as administrator if it is installed to the Program Files folder.
Here's what to try...
Close any programs that are security holes... email client, browser, instant messaging client.
Turn off your anti-virus protect scanning... in other words, the real time scanning that is always occurring.
Then retry the TMG installer with the a/v scanning off. A/V scanning is one known cause of this issue. I've installed TMG under WinVista with both Norton and Avast running with no problem.
Be sure to turn the antivirus protect scanning back on before rebooting and before running any web-related programs.
-
Don't have any good ideas. I've installed TMG v6.12 under WinVista at least a couple of dozen times with no problem. You do not need to run the installer as administrator... just the program.
Virginia suggests that this was once caused by an anti-virus program. To test that, you should temporarily disable your antivirus scanner and try the installer with the antivirus scanner turned off.
Before the test, I would close all running programs and particularly any program that is a security concern while your antivirus scanner is off such as any email and instant messaging clients.

Reindex bebuilds the indexes with no change to the data tables.
Optimize compacts the data tables and, by necessity since the data tables have changed, reindexes.

Keep a watch on the HP site for the driver.
Looking at the WinVista driver page for the Scanjet 4670...
"Currently, there is no Windows Vista driver available for your HP product. Therefore your product will not work with Windows Vista at this time.
HP is currently working to make the HP driver solution for your product available as soon as possible. We will have basic driver solutions available for HP Scanners starting in February and completing by mid March."
Here is one person's work-around to get the 4670 working under WinVista.
"In brief -- download the Deskscan 2.9 software from the HP website and install it using Run as Administrator and at the end run the Scanner Test ...... "

Are you using the v6.12 full installer?
You can download it here:

TMG v6.12 cannot print word processor reports under Windows Vista x64 according to the document you prepared. However, I will be able to send reports out as PDF files (with the PDF software included in TMG) and print them that way, correct?
Yes. The PDF printer driver was updated to a WinVista-compatible version for TMG v6.12.
Note that the WinVista document was updated yesterday adding a couple of work-arounds.

Having to run as Administrator is related to installing under the Program Files tree. A future release of TMG should remove all data from the program folder to user space. However there are other issues and I'm not sure how they can be resolved yet.
You can always install out of the Program Files tree and then you will not have to run as Administrator. For example, I have an installation in D:\TMG that runs with no permissions issues. This is a simple work-around for the WinVista permissions issues.
I've been watching for the WinHelp viewer as well. A HTML version of the help file is being worked on and that will be WinVista-compatible but it will be a while before that is completed.
Update: The WinHelp viewer is still being tested and, hopefully, should be released before the end of February.
Installer hangs with v6.12 on Windows Vista

Many thanks. This lends further support to the idea that the installer issue is a conflict with something that had been installed between the WinVista install and the TMG install. Still have no idea what.
