  1. I'm using 6.07 Gold Ed. and on exporting to a gedcom file cannot see any address (ADDR) tags. I have selected all tag types and all events.

Is this a known issue - any hints??

Level 1 ADDR tags subordinate to individual or family records are not supported by GEDCOM 5.5. Read Chapter 15 in Getting the Most Out of The Master Genealogist or check out my documents on GEDCOM export on Lee Hoffman's TMG Tips web site for some ideas to circumvent this.

  2. I just want to know if its possible to make charts where you see all people wich you have entered? Most programs dont support that, but FTM does support it and what about TMG?

(Note that this is not an official Wholly Genes response.)

No. TMG does not include an "all-in-one" chart such as you are describing.

  3. I guess I was surprised that the Source elements were being concatenated to the Source Title field and assumed it was something TMG added to be helpful.  It would be helpful if there was a setting for Basic Source that only included the actual Source Title Element and Verbose Source that included all of the Elements in the Source Title.

There is no 'basic' source. There is the source data that you recorded and that is what is exported. The labels are added to explain the data. Otherwise, different data types would be combined with no means of understanding what the data is.

This is a matter of being able to record detailed source data in TMG and the GEDCOM source record specs having no way to accomodate the data with the same sort of breakdown. The end point of the export is to export your data in a meaningful way, not just a part of your data, and to do it within the default GEDCOM source record structure.

  4. I'm trying to determine if it is possible to modify the Source information that is exported to Gedcom 5.5 in TMG.

Can I control the exported data in TMG somehow to include just the Title and not the additional info?  I'm importing this into TNG and, even with "Do Not Display Living" set, the Sources appear and provide too much info.

Basically, the answer is no. The data that you record for the source will be exported and GEDCOM provides little leeway as to how that data can be exported. The data has to go somewhere and if GEDCOM doesn't provide an appropriate tag, the data goes to the TITL tag.

  5. This might be the wrong place...but...how do you  get V6 to export the images??? When I export to a gedcom and then import that gedcom into TMG V6 I lose all of the "internal photos>

Only the links to external exhibits are exported. I would suggest using only external exhibits in any case. They give better control and keep your database backup much smaller.

Doug mentioned the part of the GEDCOM specs that covers encoding multimedia objects. This has nothing to do with TMG internal exhibits. GEDCOM actually supports only links to external multimedia objects and just provides a way to add those external objects to the GEDCOM file.

  6. I run several websites using phpGedView using data from a TMG database and it's working great. I do have one wish though: When exporting data to a GEDCOM it would be really great if we were able to choose to export only primary exhibits.

That looks fairly straightforward and I'll talk to the programmer when we have the time to look at it.

  7. Jim-

May I respectfully ask what the meaning of "we" is? Over the past year or so, I have had a hard time figuring out which forum participants are "we', and which are "they", with "they" referring to Wholly Genes Inc. Posting privileges in the "pre-sales" forum by seemingly non-TMG personnel muddy thing up even more.

I have a particular interest, because on Monday, January 23, 2006, at 6:11 PM local PST, I sent a message to another TMG user, with a copy to Phil Dee of WhollyGenes, which included the following concerning this thread. It included the following "

    (quote)

"(snip) So, is Dale's problem one of paths? Quite possibly......Or is it one of a missing "Media Viewer" DLL? Not likely? ......Or a missing or incorrect version of Riched*.dll or Richtx.ocx? Possibly....(snip)

"We" in my message refers to the programmer responsible for the Exhibit Log and myself.

I have talked to Phil about Dale's problem but was totally unaware of the email you copied to him and of what it had to say.

Phil is in Support and works for Wholly Genes. I'm not in Support and don't work for Wholly Genes.

I can respond to Pre-Sales topics since I'm a moderator and often do. Sometimes, I say that my response is not an official Wholly Genes response and sometimes I neglect to do it (and should state that).

    OK? :)

  8. Last night when I opened TMG 6, I got the screen that asks me to select how I want to open the program.  I selected open Last File.  Then a File Open window popped up directed at the main TMG folder, asking for me to select an OCX type file.  I couldn't fine anything that satisfied this so I hit cancel.

That's always the correct response for an erroneous Open dialog. Never try to respond to the dialog and always click [Cancel].

Immediately noted that photos were not showing on Individual Screen.  When I go to the Media Library for any person there are large blue squares with the name of the media but no thumbnail.  I tried to load a new photo and the process worked normally until I closed the media select window, then the new image showed the same big blue square.

This looks like an unexplained OCX registration issue to me. Hang on. I need to get some information before suggesting a test. (Reinstall should also work.)

    Open the Exhibit Log.

Select an image that is not displaying correctly.

Right-click and select 'Copy to Slideshow Manager'.

Does the image display in the SlideShow Manager?

    Close the Slideshow Manager.

Close the Exhibit Log and TMG.

    Run TMG.

Is the image display issue corrected?

If not, I have another thing to try.

  9. A couple weeks ago I upgraded from TMG 6.01 to 6.07. The first time I went to exhibits and tried to insert new text "internal text" I got an error message that states:

Object GOMEDIAVIEWER is not found.    170FRMEXHIBIT.MVIEWEXHIBIT

                   Abort    Retry     Ignore

It will add an external text file but when I try to open it I get the same message.

I've been been able to replicate the error. The updater appears to be causing the problem.

A couple of days ago, we surmised that the issue is that the activex control which contains the text viewer module is not properly registered and this is the source of the problem. The solution is to register the activex control.

I installed v6.00.000 and updated to v6.07.000. (This is the same updater that Dale used.)

I ran TMG, opened the Sample project and set the focus to Frank Alexander (1), opened the Exhibit Log and tried to view the text exhibit.

    And got:

    2006.01.26, 20:27:58 1923Object GOMEDIAVIEWER is not found. 170

    FRMEXHIBIT.MVIEWEXHIBIT

Closed the Exhibit Log and exited TMG.

    Opened the Command Prompt.

    Changed to the system32 folder.

    CD \windows\system32

Registered the activex control by typing:

    regsvr32 richtx32.ocx

    Hit [Enter].

Got the confirmatory prompt and exited the Command Prompt.

Ran TMG, opened the Exhibit Log and tested the text viewer.

The viewer now worked with no error.

I asked Dale to try this a couple of days ago and he said it didn't work. I've asked him to try again. Puzzled as to why the registration wouldn't work.

  10. (This is not an official Wholly Genes response.)

In UFT you can have multiple individuals associated with an event in the same role.

It works the same in TMG although the notion of a 'witness' differs in UFT and in TMG. All individuals linked to an event in UFT will be imported as such to TMG.

It was suggested that you are in the Beginner data entry mode where the witnesses to events are hidden.

Change to Advanced data entry mode.

File / Preferences / Program Options / Data Entry / Data Entry Mode / select Advanced

This PDF completely documents the UFT to TMG imports. It describes what data is imported and where it goes.

    http://www.whollygenes.com/files/uft2tmg.pdf

There is also an article located on the Roots Users Group website written for the RUG Newsletter by Paul Lawrence on UFT import to TMG.

    http://www.rootsusers.org/

Go to Downloads, scroll down and you'll find a downloadable PDF file....

Once you start importing for real, there will be questions that you have that should be directed to the TMG-L mail list so that those who are experts in the UFT import can respond.

  11. (This is not an official Wholly Genes response.)

In UFT you may create a source (i.e. 1850 Census - Polk county, Iowa) and then attach that source to many events providing details (ED, Page, Line, etc.) for each of the events you to which you attach it.

There is no difference with TMG. Each source in the Master Source List can be linked by citations to as many name, relationship and event tags as you wish.

You may be thrown off by the Mills templates with the details in the source. I do very much what you describe with custom census source types. The census source is per year - 1850 U.S. Census (Free Schedule) - for example. They could be by year and county as your example. The details are in the citation detail. Here's my 'template' for creating the citation detail entry for US census entries - ST, Co, Tn, p. n, ED n Sh n Ln n (Nat. Arch. Film #).

People using TMG record census sources many, many different ways depending on what suits them. The UFT MIlls census templates are very similar to the TMG Mills census templates.

Sources in TMG are specific to the data set, not external to the databases in a master library as with UFT.

  12. (This is not an official Wholly Genes response.)

...can I just import from a Gedcom rather than a Legacy file?  What will I be missing?

The answer is to try both and compare the results. There are a few omissions from the direct Legacy import such as the citation and source 'actual text' fields. The loose ends for the direct import have been reported.

  13. Many thanks for your advice. I know it maybe early days but is there any real significance between the two types of runnings.

In terms of TMG functionality? None at all.

There is an issue of access to the installation depending on operating system privileges for different users if an 'all users' installation is located in a privileged folder such as Program Files (discussed in a different topic in this section).

  14. Is there a way to send emails from TMG and TMG Reports? I have been sending the reports to Word, then sending the email. Would be much easier to send from TMG.

No. You have to proceed as you have been doing.

This is not the appropriate forum for this topic since this is not a site (aka related to this Message Board) issue. I'm assuming this is a v6 topic and should have been posted in the 'The Master Genealogist v6' support forum (above).

  15. ...is there a possibility that I can reinstall TMG version 6 in both the US and UK but on seperate drives safely.

Sure. You'll notice that when you install TMG, on the first screen, there are alternates to install for 'all users' or for a single user (or different single users if you have more than one).

You install one installation for 'all users' and after that is done, you install a second installation for a single user.

Each installation needs to be to a different program folder location. And you will need to unlock each installation when run for the first time.

Be aware that each installation has different settings for paths and the configuration files (app.ini) for the installations will differ and you must be aware and maintain that difference. Other files such as layouts can be used in either installation.

Running two installations is straightforward but requires a certain amount of discipline and awareness of the differences between the two.

  16. PDF printer drivers have a variety of settings that end up affecting the size of the PDF file produced (for example... how images are handled, whether fonts are embedded, etc.). You would need to configure each driver with comparable settings before you could make a valid comparison.
