Program hangs on exit

Recommended Posts

When I try to exit TMG7 it frequently hangs with an empty gray window; clicking the close button (x) at the end of the title bar brings up the following message:

TMGHangOnExit.jpg

.. but there is no other related program such as Chartform open.

I have three projects and the problem occurs with all three, although only after a change has been made to the project. The only way to close the window is from Task Manager | End Task.

I am using v7.03 Gold UK Edition on Windows XP Pro (SP3), both relatively new installs. I've run all the File | Maintenance operations but the problem persists.

Is anyone else having this problem? Or does anyone have any suggestions to work around the problem?

You didn't say what happens when you click the [switch To...] button.

The 'gray window' appears to be the program workspace with all windows and toolbars in the workspace and the menu bar closed.

There is a shutdown sequence and something appears to be hanging during the shutdown sequence.

I've never seen this and have no idea as to the cause. Looking...

David, do you have TMG set to Backup on exit? If you leave the empty gray screen alone for a couple of minutes - and not click the X button - will TMG close by itself?

Do you have a third-party backup program making incremental backups automatically (since it only happens after you make a change in TMG)?

In line with what Virginia said, you might try disabling the prompts on exit for save layout and for backup and see what effect that has.

File / Preferences / Program Options / Startup and Exit tab / the 'During exit' options

In line with the previous postings / questions:

you say: ....when I try to exit TMG7....

How do you exit TMG7?

> File > Exit or

> clicking on the red X in the upper right corner

[Vera... David said that he was using the [eXit] button. See his original message. jeb // Correct, Jim I obviously missed that little detail. B) ]

Upon exit of TMG7

> Is the project you had been working on still open or not?

Does it make any difference if you close the project first (File > Close Project) before closing the program / application?

Vera found a Microsoft help topic on this dialog. The gist of the MS topic suggests that there is an open prompt in Tmg that is waiting for a response. One of the 'During exit' options is the most likely candidate and disabling those options might eliminate the occurrence of [switch To...] dialog.

Firstly, thanks to all who've replied so quickly -- my apparent slowness to respond is due to being in GMT+8 (Perth, Australia).

Jim asked: You didn't say what happens when you click the [switch To...] button.

Answer: the Windows Start menu opens. (and clicking Retry just clears the dialog box)

Virginia and Jim asked about the During Exit options; both of these are unchecked, i.e. I don't save the layout nor do I backup.

Virginia suggested waiting a couple of minutes to see if TMG eventually closes. I've just reproduced the problem and so far have been waiting 40 minutes. Looking at the tmg7.exe process in Windows Task Manager it's not consuming any CPU cycles and it is sitting on a constant 44MB of memory used.

Virginia asked about 3rd party incremental backups; no, I don't use these. (My backup strategy is to do daily backups of my entire C: drive which are kept for 2 weeks).

Vera asked about whether closing the project first and then exiting has any effect; the answer is No, either way TMG still hangs. When I close the project first the project closes without any problem and the toolbar and menubar remain at the top of the window and the TMG icon remains in the title bar. On selecting File | Exit the toolbar and menubar disappear and the TMG icon is replaced by the Windows generic icon as shown in my original post.

Jim's most recent post mentions the MS take on the dialog box is: an open prompt in Tmg that is waiting for a response ... There's definitely nothing else of this kind open.

Thanks again to the above members who have tried to help with this problem. I guess that, as so far no one else is reporting the same problem, the cause must be related to my system. So if my answers to your questions suggest further ideas for troubleshooting I'd appreciate hearing them.

 I too have the exact behavior that David is having, although only after making a change to the database. If I open a project, do nothing and exit - it closes properly. If I make any addition, deletion or change to any data; it closes the project file but not TMG and displays the same option box. I have to use Task Manager to close the program.

I am using a Dell XPS with 2xdual CPUs and max system memory. I can open many windows, several datasets, browse the web; drop notes into OneNote, cut and paste from Excel and monitor email all at the same time without performance problems or error. But, when I close the program, backup the data (or not) - the program fails to close completely.

Regards,

Greg

I'd lost track of this. I sent David a debug version and he got the [switch To...] ending and sent me the log (which showed no problems). I passed this on to the programmer and that's where we stand. I'll ask the programmer for more ideas.
