Report: List of all Persons

Recommended Posts

I have more then 20,000 persons in my pedigree.

I want to make a listing of all my persons with

Name, First Name

ID

Birth Year

Town of Birth

Partner

Year of Marriage

Town of Marriage

Death Year

Town of Death

I tried already in Excell, but I receive the message:

TMG don't react.and I have to close my program.

In version 7, I had the same problem but sometimes

I received an excell-list after a very long time.

I find it very strange, because I can display an expanded

selection list in a few seconds.

Is there a possibility to produce the list I want?

Greetings

Hi Ronny,

Your terminology is not clear, but I think I can guess what you are doing. I assume you are creating a "List of People" report, and on the Report Definition Screen your Subjects are "All people in the project" and you choose "Save to" file type as "Microsoft Excel v5 (XLS)"?

On the Report Options "Output Columns" I assume your Column Types are:

Name Group* tag: Last, Given Names

ID Number

Birth Group* tag: Year

Birth Group* tag: City

Spouse ID (last viewed)

Marriage Group* tag: Year

Marriage Group* tag: City

Death Group* tag: Year

Death Group* tag: City

Are my assumptions correct?

When you run the report does it give you a status bar in a pop-up window which says:

Calculating columns for 20,000 people...

You said you received a message, but then did not identify what the message said.

I just ran that report on a very large project and it finished in less than a minute.

Have you recently done any of the File Maintenance routines?

Need more details.

I have had a paralell experience with Excel 2007 on XP but not related to TMG.

I get an Excell .xls file sent to me as an attachment (recieved in Firefox). Click on the attachment to open it and Excel opens with no file shown. Wait a few minutes and finally the file shows (small 5 sheet file, each of the 4 sheets, each of less than 50 rows and 6 columns, no graphics).

If you reclick on the Firefox attachment, then Ecell instantly shows the file.

If you save the file to the desktop, click on it from the desktop the same delay occurs.

Or once save you click on the file in Windows Explorere Excel opens and then has a long delay in showing the file.

If you click again on the file in WE once the empty Excel is showing, the file renders very quickly.

My analysis, is that Excel is expecting a .XLSX file. It takes a long time to open itself, then unpick the .XLS file.

There could be some setting in Excel that would improve its performance.

Hello,

Thanks for help (I translate from a dutch version)

Yes, I want to make a People List in columnar format.

Name and Surname / Birth Group*tag Year / Birth Group*tag City / Spouse Name and Surname /

Marriage Group*tag Year / Marriage Group*tag City / Death Group*tag Year / Death Group * tag City

I start with Report, Listof... , Persons

Configuration Name: List of Persons

I select All persons

I select Save to... Microsoft Excell v5

In options, I define the columns

Then I select MAKE REPORT

I receive a display with: Calculate Colums for 20,711 persons

After a while (seconds) I see on the top line of TMG:

My Project ProjectVandenbusscheRonny_.PJC (Don't React)

And when I give a mouseclick (to anulate)

I receive the message:

TMG don't react

with options:

Close Program or

Wait until program reacts.

I did already check Integrity of files without problems

Greetings

Ronny,

The notice "Don't React" ("Not Responding" in the the English versions of Windows) comes from Windows, and just means that TMG is too busy to respond to Windows when you probe it with the mouse click. That's quite normal for reports that take a while to complete, as any report with 20,000 people will. I suggest you give the report more time to see if it will complete.

That report takes 3 minutes on my system, with 17,700 people. You have about 10% more people, but I'd think the relative speeds of our computers would make more difference than that difference in the number of people in the report. During that time the percent complete bar did not advance from 3%, so don't depend on that as an indicator of progress.

Hello,

I tried again and the list was ready after 136 minutes.

(about 1 % in 96 seconds)

Very slow, I mean.

My processor is a 2.26GHz

and I have 3,00 GB of RAM MEMORY

with windows 7

Greetings

Ronnie,

Yes, that is very slow. My system uses and quad-core i7 processor running at 2.86GHZ, with 8GB of RAM. So the system is a bit faster, and with quite a bit more RAM. I have no clue whether that would account for the significant difference, or whether there might be another factor that's more significant.
