3.7 surnames

Recommended Posts

I'm still using 3.7 on Win98. If it ain't broke, don't fix it; but I have started to wonder about some European surnames like "van de ...", "von ...", etc. In The Netherlands (and perhaps other countries) "van der Aa" is sorted under "A" and "van Kessel" under "K". Is there a way to accomplish this type of sorting in 3.7? What about more recent versions?

In TMG v3.7, the PreSurname (van, de, etc.) has to be entered in the Surname field or the Given field, and whatever is in the Surname field will affect the sequence when names are sorted by the Surname. In TMG v6.x there are 9 fields for storing name data, including a PreSurname field. TMG v6.x also has a sort template and sort fields for names. So, in TMG v6.x, you can

  • Put the parts of the name into subfields that describe the part of the name more accurately
  • Specify the SortSurname and SortGiven fields differently than the display versions of those fields
  • Make a sort template that controls which name fields are part of the sort key, and in what sequence

TMG v6.x is much more flexible than TMG v3.x and 4.x in this regard. No solution is perfect, and there are no true standards for how PreSurname data should be handled. For example, will people look for "van Gogh" under V in the index or under "G"? With TMG v6.x you can control how you want to handle such names, and the program helps you to be consistent with whatever you decide.
