Adding Sources to multiple persons / tags in one sweep?

Recommended Posts

When I want to add a Source from the master

source list to many persons (or their tags?) in one-

operation, is this possible? Looked at a focus group as

an intermediate step but did not find an avenue to do it.

Perhaps my understanding is wrong or I am overlooking something?

kindest regards

from Leeuwarden

You can add a citation to a source to everyone in the Data Set, using the Cite Globally button on the Master Source List. You have some control over which types of tags are cited for those people when you use that feature.

But you cannot do that for only a selected group of people. The only way to do that is to Move the people to a different Data Set, make the global citation, and Move them back. The trouble is, when you move a group to another Data Set, all the connections between those people and any others in your data are lost. So you would loose and have to recreate parent/child links, marriages, and any other joint tags between those being moved and the others.

This may be feasable if you want to make the citation for everyone in a line with a single connection to the rest of your data. But if there are multiple connections this quickly becomes way more trouble than it's worth.

The ability to apply the "global" citation to only the people in the Focus Group has been suggested as an enhancement, but has not yet appeared. :(

Terry is correct about this issue. Depending upon what you want to do, there is one other possible "work around" that may get you close. If you can produce a report that will list the ID numbers of the people concerned, you could add a completely new TAG to all these people, and cite a specific SOURCE to that new tag all as one operation. Not sure if this will be of value, but you may want to check out John Cardinal's TMG Utility with the topic "Add Events". You cannot (currently) do exactly what you want as a group operation, but this may help?

Hope this gives you ideas,
