Jim, this is the first time this has happened since I purchased this Windows 10 laptop two years ago! At least it works on the second try, but I can't imagine what changed (unless a Windows update is the culprit).

The fact that it works fine the second time is what's very strange. I'm using the Microsoft Print to PDF option and "Printer" as report destination. Where would I reset the report configuration...or is what I've told you so far correct?

NOW WORKING! BUT PLEASE SEE MY QUESTIONS! For the first time ever, when I attempted to open TMG 9.05, after arriving at the screen that asks whether you want the program to make changes to the computer (in words or substance!), whether I clicked on yes or no, I immediately went to my desktop background with no icons...and couldn't navigate anywhere else, although my mouse arrow still responded. There was no error message. There was only one other program open at that time. I rebooted and had the same result. If, when I reached the same point, I used Ctrl-Alt-Delete, I rec'd the usual set of options, chose Cancel (I think it was), and was taken back to the one other program that was open. I checked my antivirus event log, and there was nothing indicating a problem. I don't know what else to check. 1. Should I be choosing Yes or No when asked about making changes to my computer? (I've been choosing Yes routinely.) 2. Any suggestions regarding this issue? TMG opened fine yesterday, and I didn't make any unusual changes to TMG (wasn't testing Restore -- an issue covered in another message) or any other programs yesterday. Thanks...with the hope this isn't a major issue.

Here's the issue: I have a second marriage for a relative's ex-wife. Although she's not a blood relative, for several reasons (and to help a relative of this ex-wife) I have entered her second husband and children. This information appears in a Journal Report for my relative, her first husband, and I've been told not to share that data because her "second family" doesn't know about her first marriage. I know how to hide data for individual tags...but is there a way to hide a group of tags (marriage, children) all at once so that it won't appear in a Journal Report? Thank you.

I decided to take the easy way out: The marriage was very short-lived and the family member doesn't want it to appear. So I inserted an anecdote and excluded it. That way I know it's there...but no one else will. :-)

Thanks for your input! Lots more to think about! P.S. I just tried to simply "exclude" the marriage of another couple. It works well in the Journal Report...but not in the Descendant Indented Chart. Is there a way to exclude it in the Chart as well? Or don't exclusion marks work in the Chart? If a "marriage sensitive" tag would work better, would you suggest how to set that up?

Please don't give up on me! This is a problem, not a basic question. I reset TMG so that I no longer run the program as administrator. I exited TMG and reopened it awhile later. Because I changed some tag settings, I wanted to test them, so I tried running a Journal Report. First I got a "Cannot update the cursor File_M, since it is read-only." "Ignore" didn't work. "Cancel" took me directly to a backup option. I had to say "Yes" or "No," and got "Unknown member REPROTECTIONMAN." My notes aren't as clear as I'd like, but I was unable to exit and got a dialogue box saying "Look in: The Master Genealogist v9 Folder," with the list of files beneath it. (Note that the other reports worked.) I finally went to the Task Manager to close TMG. Next I went through the Maintenance options. Everything worked...except for the optimization. It went to 100%, was unable to optimize, and displayed the path for the optimize.log. Since the only thing I had changed was to remove the requirement to run the program as administrator, I right-clicked the TMG icon and chose to run as administrator. The Journal Report worked when I ran TMG as administrator! WHY...and should I just go back to running TMG as administrator, or is there something else involved?

Thanks for the additional information/explanation. To be honest, I don't recall what I did after running as administrator and entering my serial number, although my notes do say to exit TMG and reopen it after entering the serial number, so I'm assuming that's what I did. As long as everything seems to be working all right otherwise, I guess I'll just leave things as is. Thanks again!

I'm using Carbonite for my backups. I tried white-listing TMG in my antivirus program, but that didn't help. Would that serve the same purpose as testing with a disabled antivirus program? I wonder why I chose Run as Administrator in the Compatibility tab in the first place! I don't recall having a problem requiring that. When I had to Run as Administrator in order to avoid entering my Serial Number, I believe I used the simple right-click "Run as Administrator" method. And even if I accidentally went to the Compatibility tab to choose Run as Administrator, I shouldn't be having the report problem without that item!

I haven't tested a backup lately...and have a question: Please remind me what I need to consider if I'm restoring my most recent backup so that I don't lose any settings? Do I simply choose "Restore" and use the Wizard without making any changes? Thanks!

What does that mean? What kind of "issue"? Could it be related to a Windows setting? Would reinstalling TMG make a difference do you think?

Will do. I'm glad I hadn't made any other changes other than removing the "Run as administrator" option! Any idea why this is making a difference?

Okay, so if I'm reinstalling TMG, I first install the program. Then I restore just the project data and after that my customizations (unless I want to customize on my own)? I haven't changed much, tending to use defaults. I do have notes regarding path changes. Does that sound about right?

This is worse than I thought. In addition to the above, I am unable to edit anything (tags, data -- anything at all!). And all I changed was eliminating running TMG as administrator in Compatibility! Maybe I should try going back to using that setting.

I guess I'm one of those who was blindly using backup without fully understanding what I was doing. It seemed very straight-forward based on the options offered. Okay, so I had to learn not to back up exhibits, but otherwise it seemed to make sense to back up everything so that I would have less "tweaking," especially on a new computer. Thanks for taking so much time to help. I've made notes...and hope they make sense to me when I need them!

It's nice to know I'm not alone. :-) I did as you suggested and checked and then unchecked the Read-only checkbox and agreed that all subfiles, etc., should not be read-only. I reopened TMG and had the same problem. So I rebooted my laptop -- I still can't produce a Journal report, neither using Screen Preview nor the Printer. Update: It's all narrative reports that are a problem.

So I will end up with two separate backups. I guess that's why I've been doing BACKUP ALL, with the assumption that that covers everything. Okay, so I only back up the project each time I exit. That I understand. If restoring to a new computer, you said "Do not restore the Preferences > Program Options customization (the app.ini file) to computers other than the one on which the backup was made. (You could make a customizations backup on each different computer.)" Why wouldn't I want the same customizations on a new/different computer? Down to one question. I hope this thread helps others who don't quite get it!

Done. Now...if I ever have to use my unlock code again, I change to administrator only by right-clicking the icon and choosing Run as administrator but not in the Compatibility tab; is that correct?

Odd that I haven't had a problem before. How do I disable running TMG as an administrator? When I right-click the desktop icon, there's an option to run TMG as an administrator...but not to undo that. << You can't run TMG always as administrator unless you have made a permanent change in the compatibility options under the program's properties.>> Hmmm...back to how to undo that! I sure don't remember changing anything in the compatibility options!

That started when this was happening: Some users have reported that after installing TMG on Windows 8, or upgrading to Windows 10, they are often asked to enter the unlock code (serial number) even though they have done so before. This is caused by a change in a security feature introduced in Windows 8. The solution is as follows: 1. When asked for the unlock code, do not enter it but instead close TMG. 2. Right-click on the desktop shortcut for TMG, and choose "Run as Administrator"...and enter your administrator password if one is in use for your system: 3. When TMG opens and you are prompted for the unlock code, enter it and the name and e-mail address you used when you purchased the current version of TMG. 4. Close TMG, and then re-open normally. You should not be asked for the unlock code again. Is this no longer necessary? Still, I've been running TMG as administrator for a long time with no issues. Perhaps today's experience was a frustrating computer glitch If I do have to run TMG as administrator, should I choose "Yes" or "No" regarding changes to my computer?

I'm sorry for my confusion, but I want to make this as easy as possible. Again, I've installed and reinstalled TMG on many laptops since 2007. I've always been successful, but sometimes I have to reset options. I would like to avoid that in the future if that's possible. :-) 1. I've been doing BACKUP ALL (the default option but without the exhibits), which you don't recommend; correct? Does it hurt to use this...or just take up more time (which isn't very long anyhow)? What's the downside? And if I use this, can I RESTORE ALL if it's the same computer? 2. Okay. 3. Are you saying to back up customizations separately...or include them in a regular backup occasionally? 4. Examples of the "customizations" to which you refer? 5. "You could make a customizations backup on each different computer": I don't understand this. 6. Moot point. Good. LOL! 7. I back up on Carbonite, store backup files in DropBox, and have backups on my computer (which, of course, could be lost). When you say "Print your data," do you mean in Reports? If so, they're always available. What good is a GEDCOM? Isn't too much lost?
