  1. Direct ancestors for DNA purposes

Thanks for the suggestion! I've never worked with focus groups, so I'll have a chance to exercise my brain.
  2. I'll send an email. I've resized individual windows by "dragging," but this sounds somewhat different. Thanks!
  3. Is there any logical reason why my customizations didn't "hold" when I backed up TMG 9.05 and restored to my new laptop? I chose BACKUP ALL and seem to have checked off all the items I wanted to back up (e.g., Report Configurations)...and the same for the Restore. In particular, my report settings didn't restore. This time around my "old" laptop is still fine, so I finally found the settings that I needed. But it sure was a trying experience! Thanks in advance...
  4. I did have to change the path for Exhibits and Backup paths...plus the user name changed, so I had to edit that also. And now I don't recall when I did that. I am assuming that I figured out that I had to "restore" to the correct path and made the adjustment during the restore process. But if I hadn't updated the paths for the configuration and report-output files in particular before I performed the restore, I'm assuming that that's why my configurations and report output "stuff" wasn't what I expected. I'll have to make a note of that for the future! Thanks, Terry!
  5. How do you change the windows size for just TMG? I've never done something like that.
  6. Your reply was very helpful. It hadn't occurred to me to looks at the items you've listed above. Apparently the data input for "Tag Entry" (other than for Memo) uses the default text, as I haven't found anything to increase the size of that data. It's very small, IMO. What size display do you use for your high-rez screen? Thanks very much for your help!
  7. The only paths that I've changed are for exhibits and (it appears) backups, and that hasn't been a problem. It was just the customizations that were an issue. Everything else remains in the "The Master Genealogist v9" folder. I'm among those who "misused backup and restore and process items that should never need to be processed," including exhibits. It takes longer to back up, but at least I don't have to think about when I last backed up exhibits.
  8. I've installed TMG 9.05 in my new Windows 10 laptop. When I view or print a Journal Report, some of the exhibits (.jpg photos) are huge, even in some cases becoming nearly a full page in size. I've defined the exhibits as being a maximum size of 1.5"x1.5", but that's just not happening. Am I going to have to resize all my photos? Is this a Windows 10 issue? I didn't have this problem on my Windows 8.1 laptop. I would be happy to provide further information that might help solve this problem. Thanks!
  9. THAT'S what I was missing! I had selected that printer in Printer Setup (I need to do that too, right?) but not in Properties! Thanks very much!!
  10. LOL! That's not very reassuring. I would hate to have to save 26 files as word-processor files and convert them to .pdf files! (I have 13 separate family trees for my husband and myself.) I guess I would have to consider providing updates to relatives a lot less frequently. I don't understand why when I try to "print" to the Microsoft PDF driver it actually prints the document! Might there be another setting that I'm not using?
  11. Thank you for the resize-exhibits suggestion. Believe it or not, that was something I didn't know! One problem solved. Now I just have to figure out how I'm going to be able to save Journal Reports as .pdf files. :-(
  12. PDF Printer Installation Problems

Terry, please note my previous response. I believe I did exactly what was described: Print to 'Printer' and select the 'Microsoft Print to PDF' printer driver." I've selected the Microsoft Print to PDF printer driver in Printer Setup, chosen "Printer" for Report Destination...and the document is printing, not being saved as a PDF. My comment in that previous response (If I choose "Save to Adobe Reader PDF," I get the same error message I mentioned above) was an additional observation. Meanwhile, I'm unable to save a .pdf of reports.
  13. PDF Printer Installation Problems

Terry, I saw that yesterday and tried it -- but that printed the report, while I want to save it to Dropbox so that I'm able to share the report with family members. If I choose "Save to Adobe Reader PDF," I get the same error message I mentioned above. Judy
  14. PDF Printer Installation Problems

I previously defined CutePDF Writer as my "printer" and saved my reports to Dropbox in .pdf format. In Windows 10 I am no longer able to do that. I am saving to File Type Adobe Reader (PDF) with a file name pointing to Dropbox. When I click "Create Report," I get a message "Printer not activated - error code 30." When I click "OK," I get another popup, "Unable to start print job," with TerPrint2,, Error Code 15" across the top. When I click "OK," I get yet another popup, "Error exporting to...the Dropbox location. What exactly does "Printer not activated" mean? I tried exporting to an .rtf file, which was only partially successful because my exhibits weren't included. However, I don't want to add another step to 26 documents (13 family histories with Journal and Descendant Indented Chart reports) by exporting to a word-processing file and then converting to a .pdf. I went back to an earlier message when I had a similar problem and said, "I removed the Wholly Genes PDF Writer v4 and reinstalled -- and all is well!" So I again removed the Wholly Genes PDF Writer...but now I can't find it to reinstall it! HELP! If finding and reinstalling the Wholly Genes PDF Writer doesn't work, is there any other way I can successfully produce a .pdf report directly from the Report screen in Windows 10? Judy Madnick Albany, NY
  15. Everything was fine...until I installed Windows 8.1 (from 8.0) yesterday afternoon. Now when I try to produce a report in .pdf format using exactly the same method I always used, I receive two messages: 1. Printer not activated, error code - 30. I click on OK. 2. Unable to start the print job. Printer Setup shows CutePDF as being selected...as it always was. I checked my Program list, and CutePDF is still there. And I tested CutePDF with a WordPerfect document, and I was able to produce the .pdf file with no problem. So...why am I unable to produce a .pdf file in TMG (as I was able to do as recently as yesterday morning)? CutePDF shows up in properties as having been selected, I'm saving to file type PDF, the port for the "Wholly Genes PDF Writer" is "nul" -- what else can I look for? Thanks! Judy Madnick
  16. Virginia, I haven't produced any large charts in VCF. At this point I don't recall why I chose CutePDF as my printer in TMG. That's why I'm wondering whether there was something different about earlier versions that resulted in that choice.
  17. I think my computer is moving along better now. Perhaps the "slowness" had something to do with the various updates I was installing, which required reboots and resulted in slower boot-ups due to the changes they made in the system. As for CutePDF -- did I need it in an earlier TMG version? And it's meaningless that when I check the properties in Report Destination for both Screen Preview and Save to PDF that under Printer|Selected I have Cute PDF? Right now I'll leave well enough alone because everything is working (thank you!).
  18. When I print any report and check the "Printer setup," I've selected the CutePDF as my printer. I've just assumed that that meant I was actually using CutePDF, no?
  19. Does that work in conjunction with CutePDF? That's where I'm confused. Meanwhile, thanks again for your help. I have now straightened out three issues that occurred when I upgraded to 8.1.
  20. I guess I'm not "everyone." What changes would I have to make to use the PDF driver? I'll have to watch the performance. I've been making a few changes that require rebooting, and I know that sometimes a reboot after such changes can take longer.
  21. I removed the Wholly Genes PDF Writer v4 and reinstalled -- and all is well! I never would have thought of that because I assumed I'm not using it in the first place. But what do I know? LOL! Win 8.1 seems to have slowed down my computer considerably, especially at boot-up. Have you noticed a change? Maybe I should check my startup "stuff." Thanks for your help!
  22. This morning I tried opening TMG 8 and received the message "Cannot load 32-bit DLL ter 19." Last night I installed a new anti-virus program, which I'm assuming affected TMG. Solution? If I have to reinstall TMG 8, do I have to uninstall first? Judy Madnick Jacksonville, FL
  23. I, too, would like to see "divorce" on all reports that show the marriage tag. I agree that that would clarify marriage issues. I have sent people a Descendant Indented Chart report, and they have questioned marital information because there was no divorce shown. And, Terry, with options for what we want to include, those for whom space is an issue could "uncheck" the divorce tag.
  24. Trouble with Birth Order

Hi, Michele, I'm far from an expert using TMG, but keep in mind that you can insert anything in the "Sort Date" field so that the births appear in the correct order--even a different day! So you would insert the correct birth date for each twin in the "Date" field. Let's say that's March 31, 1973. Then for Twin #1, you could use March 31, 1973, in the sort field and for Twin #2 you could use April 1, 1973, in the sort field. Those dates won't appear anywhere; they just keep the order of births correct. That's how I would handle it.
  25. PDF fans, CutePDF Writer

I can vouch for the fact that CutePDF works like a charm! I'm using Windows Vista, and it installed fine on that OS also. I do miss being able to edit my printouts via a word-processing program though and look forward to having that ability again soon!!
