How to Get Rid of UK Version?
Jim Byram replied to Terry Reigel's topic in The Master Genealogist v9
I think this is what needs to be done... Delete: "C:\Program Files (x86)\The Master Genealogist v9" Delete: "C:\ProgramData\The Master Genealogist v9" Delete: "C:\Users\(user account name)\AppData\Roaming\The Master Genealogist v9" Install the US edition from the installer. Unlock both ways (standard user and administrator). Restore the last backup. Other than restoring, the existing TMG user data folder should be fine. The project will need to be selected from the Welcome screen (or the File menu) to open. I think that will work but the last reply provides what is needed to debug the process. This is not an undertaking for a 90 year-old. -
How to Get Rid of UK Version?
Jim Byram replied to Terry Reigel's topic in The Master Genealogist v9
This is what happens when the UK Edition is installed... There is only one TMG 9.05 executable. It's the same in both US and UK editions. The UK edition installer includes a special file of updates (install_uk905.dis) and a list of items to be updated (update.txt). The first time that a new installation is run, the UK personalizations are installed. This list is probably incomplete... 1) Some settings are added or updates in the program settings file (app.ini). The UK custom place style is added. Options / Program Options / Custom Styles The new project default is changed... Options / Program Options / New Project Defaults / Default country / United Kingdom 2) New projects are set to... Options / Current Project Options / Places / Default country / United Kingdom Options / Current Project Options / Other / Currency character / British pound or Euro (you can change to either) 3) Language is set to English (U.K.) (you can do this) File / Language / select English (U.K.) 4) The help file is changed (same file with UK spelling) 5) Some replacement data tables are added in C:\ProgramData\The Master Genealogist v9 ... with new event tags for the UK census years and other things 6) The spelling dictionary is changed 7) UK appropriate state/province abbreviations are added 8) UK appropriate timeline entries are added 9) The UK sample project is added. %%%%%%%%%% Proceed to the next reply... -
Editing an Ancestor Box Chart
Jim Byram replied to peggyb50's topic in Visual Chartform and Chartform Delivery
You can run the VCF help by double-clicking the Vcf2.chm help file. The Vcf2.hlp file won't open in current Windows versions. "C:\Program Files (x86)\The Master Genealogist v9\Vcf2.chm" Under help, read Working with / Adding Components. To add a box, see the box on the toolbar. To add a component to a chart: 1. Click on the tool you want to use. 2. Click on the place on the grid where you want the component to begin, holding down the left mouse button. 3. Drag the mouse to where you want the component to end and release the mouse. Then you can resize, move and position the box, add connectors, and add data. It's been many years since I've used VCF so, hopefully, someone who still uses it will respond to this topic. You can also contact the mail list for help. -
Michael, I can't replicate the error. Based on the error message, I'm surprised that your efforts to refresh the index file didn't work. Maybe there's an error in the repository table or memo file. If you haven't added a repository since your last backup, add the repository .DBF and .FPT files from your last backup (or a previous backup). Be sure to reindex after the change. Jim

Variable ‘GOTERM’ is not found error
Jim Byram replied to Dan Stone's topic in The Master Genealogist v9
Here's a detailed explanation... -
Alton, I'll need to see your project. I'm assuming that you're running TMG v9.05. You can send me your project to: (removed since there has been no response) Make a backup with project files only and send that. Jim

0xc0000005 errors are timing errors and are not fixable by the user. Other than the reinstall that you just did, I have no ideas. The problem doesn't come from the Windows 11 installation per se (and I'm assuming that Windows 11 is fully updated). It's something else about your system.

Since VFP9R.DLL seems to be the problem, I'd go one step further. Uninstall TMG. Delete the TMG program folder ("C:\Program Files (x86)\The Master Genealogist v9"). Then reinstall TMG and see if that resolved the problem.

The Sample project is in the TMG program folder. "C:\Program Files (x86)\The Master Genealogist v9\sample" You can copy the Sample folder from the program folder to the Projects folder in your TMG user data folder.

> My old laptop shows under Backup Data Wizard: > C:\Users\2390\Documents\The Master Genealogist v9\Projects\MergedFamily_.PJC You can use a flash drive to copy the 'The Master Genealogist v9' folder from the Documents folder on your old machine to the Documents folder on the new laptop. When you run TMG on the new laptop, use File / Open to select your project. Be sure to check Preferences to be sure that the paths for the project on the new laptop are correct.

TMG V8 won't stay available for updates
Jim Byram replied to Susan D. Slade Grossl's topic in The Master Genealogist v8
You need to unlock TMG twice. 1) Unlock when running TMG normally (as a standard Windows user). 2) Unlock TMG when running as administrator. Right-click on the TMG shortcut and select 'Run as administrator'. Select [Yes] in the user Account Control prompt and enter your registration information to unlock. Exit TMG when done and run TMG normally after this. -
OLE IDispatch exception code 20103
Jim Byram replied to mbudd50's topic in The Master Genealogist v9
This appears to be a problem with the TList7 control. In other words, this is a program issue, not a data issue. First try Control Panel / Programs and Features / The Master Genealogist v9 / Repair. If Repair doesn't work, then you should do a clean uninstall and reinstall. Uninstalling/reinstalling will not affect your data; however, I'd backup your data first as a precaution . -

Adding Ancestors to Focus Group Question
Jim Byram replied to beetle3247's topic in The Master Genealogist v9
I checked the focus group tool on my installation and found no problems. You should select one person (different from the current person) and add that person to a empty focus group. Then select that person and test each of the functions one at a time. Test adding a spouse, adding ancestors, and adding descendants. -
Newly installed on new computer....very slow
Jim Byram replied to bil's topic in The Master Genealogist v9
Terry is right. A number of external applications (anti-virus, anti-malware, syncing, real-time-backup, etc.) have been found to interact with TMG and cause problems. This is a likely cause of your issue. You need to work through there applications and determine if you can resolve the problem. -
Adding Ancestors to Focus Group Question
Jim Byram replied to beetle3247's topic in The Master Genealogist v9
All operations are in relation to the names selected in the list. Spouses are only added for the selected name(s). If you want to add missing spouses for everyone in the list, select all and tick Spouses and then click [Add Others]. -
Kirk, Great. Cleanup will take a while but it's worth the effort... places, fact sentences, etc. Jim

Unable to open TMG following data transfer
Jim Byram replied to jwhelbron's topic in The Master Genealogist v9
You need to do a clean install of TMG. See the second message in this topic. -
For RM... You should download the TMG v9.05 installer and install that. You have a 30-day trial period with full functionality. Import your TMG v4 data set. Afterwards be sure to run optimize, validate file integrity, optimize. You then import the v9 data set to RM from the imported TMG v9 project. TMG v9.05 installer... TMG v9.05 File / Import / (Simple Wizard selected) / [Next] / select the appropriate TMG v4 option (data set or backup) File / Maintenance / Optimize File / Maintenance / Validate File Integrity btw... Internal exhibits are not imported. You can use John Cardinal's TMG Utility to convert internal exhibits to external exhibits. https://www.johncardinal.com/tmgutil/

Running TMG4 under Win10 is not a good idea even if it's possible. You might try the compatibility settings. Right-click on the TMG4 shortcut and click Properties and then the Compatibility tab. Under Compatibility Mode, start with Windows 95 and try that. If that works, try the next step up (Win98), and test. If that works, try the next step up and continue until you find the newest Windows version that works. Use that the compatibility mode for that Windows version. %%%%%%%%%% Do you have a TMG8 registration? If so, I can give you the installer. You can download the TMG v9.05 installer but that does you no good without a registration. I'd suggest moving to RootMagic 9 or Family Historian 7. I can help you with that.

Make sure that TMG's check for messages is disabled. Preferences / Program Options / Startup and Exit / Check for messages every ___ days / set to 0 (zero) I'd also set check for an update to 0 (zero) days.
-
I suspect that you need to use a printer driver other than the Win11 driver.

Error message when attempting to add people to TMG
Jim Byram replied to Judy M.'s topic in The Master Genealogist v9
Have you tried restarting your system?
