Kaye, The descendant indented chart uses the Abbreviation from the Tag Type. As Jim says, look at the Tag Type definition of the Death tag type.

Robbie, The simple way is to create a new Backup in v8 and then Restore it in v9. If all you want to transfer is the report definition, clear all the check marks at Step 3 of the Backup except "Report Configurations." Then in Step 4 choose which configurations to include. You can also find the report definition files and copy them to the new location. They have the extension "rpt" and are by default located in a folder called "Configuration files" which is a peer of the folder where projects are stored.

Joan, Did you check Program Options > General > Default Project Path? I think that's what controls where TMG looks for projects, and tries to put Projects under a Restore.

This is not a Windows 8 issue, but rather a common arrangement in recent laptops. My Window 7 laptop does the same thing. There is generally a way to switch back to the function keys being the default. Typically it requires changing a setting in the BIOS, which you access with a key combination as you reboot. Most systems flash the instructions for accessing it on screen briefly as the system boots. But you can do damage to your system that may make it not bootable when playing with the BIOS, and details about how to change this setting vary between systems. So if you aren't comfortable doing this seek help from the help files supplied with the computer, or from the manufacturer's website.

My recommendation is to wait. There is no need to migrate quickly - TMG will continue to function for a good while, and Wholly Genes support will continue through the end of the year. User-to-user support will continue for a substantial time after that. As Helmut says, no other program offers many of the features we depend on, and those that come closest do not have direct import capability which is required to retain the data that utilizes those features. More time will allow other vendors to develop at least some of those features, and/or direct import, allowing more successful import when the time comes to do that. Further, the more users who remain with TMG until a good alternative is available, the more incentive other vendors have to expend the effort to provide them.

Peter, The PageLink variable seems to me like the hard way. Why not just enter the former spouses as Witnesses, with appropriate roles? You probably don't want mention of this wedding in their narratives, so use an exclusion marker for Sentence for the Role, but people in the current marriage use a sentence like: [Groom] married [PO] on the .... and [bride] married [PO] on the .... to include the former spouse's names.

Actually, as I recall, there were a lot of tabs required to get from Source # to CD. While I suspect some users, like Jack, will not agree, I find the new tab sequence to be very much improved - it saves me a lot of time when I can remember to not tab four times to get from CD to Surety.

Lobsterwoman, You can add siblings and spouses to the Focus Group. To do it, first add the ancestors. Then, click the Select All button to select everyone in the FG. Next, under the Add Others section, check Descendants, and set it for one generation. Make sure no other boxes are checked, and click the Add Others button. You have just added the children of all the ancestors, in other words the siblings of their children who are in the direct line. Next, click Select All again, and set the Add Others section to add only Spouses. Click the Add Others button again. You have now added the spouses of everyone already in the FG. Since you already had the spouses who were ancestors, you were really adding the spouses of the siblings (along with any "other" spouses of the ancestors.

Neil, I deleted the extra replies. There may be an easier way, but I find the UK installer like this: From the main page of the WG site, click the link to "full details" for TMG9. Scroll down to the section "Differences between US and UK edition, and there click the like "more details." On that page which is about the UK edition there is another "30-day trial" link, which is for the UK edition.

I haven't tested everything, but based on a few items I saw it does seem to be working correctly now.

Kathleen, Actually, all but [sERIES] are conditional, so you can ignore them. I'd just make [sERIES] conditional too, and add and you can use it for sites like Ancestry, where the film info is shown, as well as other sites where it's not.

Kathleen, I ignore the newer Evidence Explained and use Ms. Mills' older Evidence! instead. Following her example in that book for citing records seen on microfilm (I don't see a website as anything but a fancy microfilm viewer), I cite the source using the same Source Type I would use if I saw the original. Then I add information about where I saw it at the end of the full footnote, for example "image seen on ellisisland.org." I do this by adding this information to the Comments field on the Supplemental tag of the Source Definition screen, and making sure that the source element is in the Full Footnote template. You could also do the same thing by adding a custom Source Element to the template so it appears on the General Tab of the Source Definition. You might even use a standard element, like Second Publisher, but if you use that one be sure not to include commas or semicolons in the entry. For more on adding source elements see the "Customizing Sources" section of my website, link below.

I'm not sure what you mean by "read our file." The Language feature in TMG has two aspects: 1. The "interface" language - the language seen in the menus and various input screens. You can set that to any of the supplied languages, which do not include Polish. This does nothing to the data or output - it just makes it possible for a user who does not understand English to use the program. 2. The "report" language - the language used to create reports. You can also set this to any of the supplied languages, which again do not include Polish. This does two things. One is to output terms added by the report itself, like names of months, days of the week, and phrases like "Children of..." in the selected language. The other is to tell TMG to use the Sentences for that language, which will cause phrases that come from Sentences, like "was born" "died in" etc. to be output in the selected language, providing that the standard tag types include sentences in that language. Only a few languages have Sentences, not including Polish. To output narrative reports in Polish you would have to create Sentences in Polish, since they are not supplied with the program. In any case the program does not translate any data you enter. So names of places, and any text you enter in Memos, or in Source definitions, will remain in whatever language you input them in. Second Site does not have the capability to change the user interface to other languages. Users of Second Site always see English. It does have the ability to output in other languages. Again, Polish is not included. You would have to provide Polish translations to all the phrases that Second Site itself adds to the site. It does use the Sentences from TMG, so if you provide Sentences in Polish in TMG Second Site can use them. Like TMG, Second Site never translates any data you enter to another language. You have to enter it in the language you want to output.

I've received two messages from TMG-L this afternoon, so it seems some service is being restored. But my reply to one of them sent three hours ago has yet to show up or appear in the archives.

I, too, suspect that emails are not yet being processed. A couple of days ago I submitted a "subscribe" request because of some issue I had with my own email two weeks ago that I thought might have resulted in my being un-subscribed, and yesterday I received a warning that my email request has not been delivered.

Hi, nckarter, As Virginia suggested, the TMG report most like the FTM report you describe is called a Journal. It is available in both Ancestor and Descendant versions. The version is selected on the General tab of Options. What you are describing is the Descendants version. In TMG this report is a true narrative, with all events output in narrative style, not just the birth/marriage/death events like in FTM. However for them to print as narrative the details must be entered in the Tags correctly. The import from FTM probably brought all the data into TMG, but in some cases it will not be entered in the Tags in a way that produces good narratives. Some cleanup will be required. The article on my website (link below) on importing has some suggestions on how to do that.

Bob, You don't say which screen you are seeing this in, but I assume you mean you have some children showing in the Children window with on the father as focus of the Details view, and the same but also additional children showing when the mother is the focus. Is that it? You fix that by adding parent/child Relationship Tags to connect the father with each of the additional children. There are a couple of ways to do that, but the easiest way is this: 1. Note the ID number of the father. 2. Make the mother the focus, and from there change the focus to one of the children who does not show when the father is the focus. 3. At the top of the Details View of that child, double-click on the Father label to open the parent/child Relationship Tag. Enter the father's ID# in the top spot in that Tag, and close the tag. 4. Change the focus to another child who does not appear with the father and repeat. (This time instead of typing in the ID# you can press F3 (Repeat) to recall the father's ID# from the previous time). 5. Repeat for all the other children who are not connected to the father.

Adrian, That is typically caused by interference of other programs with the files as TMG is working with them. The prime culprits are automatic cloud backup backup/synchronization systems like Drop-Box, although other types of programs have also been implicated. Don't let such programs have access to your TMG files while creating an export (or backup).

Adrian, Because you said you wanted the descendants of the starting person, not his or her spouse. If you want the spouses of the descendants too, checking the Spouses box in the step I describe above won't do it. That will only add the spouse of the starting person. To add the spouses of the descendants (along with the spouse of the starting person) you need to add a step: After you have all the descendants in the FG, click the "Select All" button to select everyone. Then un-check the Descendants box and check the Spouses box, and click the Add Others button again. In short, the "Add Others" function only applies to the people already in the FG, and of them, only to the ones you have selected. So if you want to add other people related to those already in the FG, you have to select the people whose relatives you want to add, then check the appropriate box(es) and click Add Others.

Adrian, It sounds like you haven't actually put the people you want to include into the Focus Group. To do that: 1. Start with an Empty FG. 2. Navigate to a screen that shows the person you want to start with, and right-click on that person. Choose Add to Focus Group. 3. Now, in the FG: Make sure the person you added is "selected" - that is highlighted. 4. In the "Add Others" section on the right, check the Descendants box and set the number of generations high enough. Make sure the Ancestors and Spouses boxes are unchecked. 5. Click the Add Others button. This will add all the Descendants to the FG and you will see their names listed in the main box there. You now have all the descendants in the FG, and you can use it for the Export. You can use the Project explorer, but it's harder. You have to create a filter, then select everyone who is left.

Adrian, What did you specify on Step 4 of the Export Wizard? That's where you control who is to be included in the export.

Sorry, I know little about the Export function. If Jim and Virginia can't help I know I can't.

Radio, In the top of the "Tag Box" - the large box in the Details View - does it say "Filtered" in red letters? If so the issue is that the Tags were created but are not displayed because one or more filters are turned on. To fix that, right-click on any Tag and on the menu that appears, about half-way down you will see "Filter for..." - in the submenu that appears when you move the mouse over this item click on whichever item had a check mark. Have you posted before on the GEDCOM issue? If not, tell us what happens, or doesn't. The serial number is kept on your system when you un-install. That allows normal upgrades, which are really un-install/install operations, to proceed without the user having to re-enter the serial number. So this is normal behavior.
